Best fishing mechanic in a video game
Best fishing mechanic in a video game
Obviously no one likes this crap but it keeps getting added in many video games - mmos, rpgs, survival games. Which game has the most interesting?
Wuthering Waves added fishing event recently and **** this is probably one of the most interesting Ive seen in a video game. No fishing rods, no bait. You just ride a gondola to the fishing spot and then there goes a mini game (no, no fishing rod involved), harpoon based. You catch several.different fish at once. You have a limited inventory, so its a tetris game to put the fish into your inventory. Different kinds of fish cost differently. You sell it at the harbor to buy **** and upgrade your gondola and fishing abilities.
Also if you sail far off the coast you have a danger meter, the higher the danger meter, the higher the chance of catching rare fish but at high danger some hazards appear and you can sink.

Warframe had spearfishing as well. I wound up spending most of my time on the Earth open world map doing the spearfishing, though I think that says more about how unfun Warframe's normal combat gameplay and progression had become by that point and I was just stalling before I finally quit.
Guild Wars 2 and the new Kuro no Kiseki 2/Trails Through Daybreak 2 had the most fun actual fishing minigame executions I can think of, where you have to match a moving target. I also liked how GW2 gave you a small boat you could drive around and fish on.

I like how the Trails games and FF14 have fishing storylines.
In Trails, the fishermen NPCs become aware of an ancient, magical fish that is causing tremors or disrupting the Septium Veins under the world, and must be fished to restore balance. There are also storylines about fishing duels for a lady's hand in marriage, etc.

In the FF14 Dawntrail fishing storyline, you go to work for a fishermen in Tural who likes to catch exotic fish, but has difficulty getting people to buy them over regular catches. Then a novice Blue Mage walks in who is trying to acquire exotic abilities from fish, so you catch exotic fish for him to eat and learn their abilities.

I also thought it was neat how FF14 has a 24-man fishing raid, where you get on a boat that goes on a tour through various seas and fjords (the devs keep adding new routes, even years later). If conditions are right, a player can trigger a Spectral Current and you can start fishing up magical fish.

Yeah I remember fishing in Guild Wars 2. You could fish either from the shore or from your boat. Never played FF14. Warframe fishing seemed quite ordinary to me except the sci-fi theme.
Fishing ******* sucks in Warframe, I don't play Warframe to fish, I play it to kill ****. I did it for the first few weeks and was mildly amused and then one day I was setting up to do it and realized "You know what? I really don't want to do this, at all." And that was that. It's makework, like everything else in Warframe, but the worst part is that it takes away from what Warframe is suppose to be about which is being a space ninja, same thing as the hoverboard crap and anything else not related to being a space ninja.
Star Trek Online has Klingon Ice Fishing where you beat the fish into submission with your fist after punching through the ice. That's the closest to an amusing fishing experience I've ever seen or heard of. I've never actually seen a game where you can fish in any kind of sensible manner with, say, nets, grenades, or electricity.Yankee Zulu wrote: ↑ March 14th, 2025, 18:10Obviously no one likes this crap but it keeps getting added in many video games - mmos, rpgs, survival games. You know what would make an awesome game...a multiplayer WHALING simulator.Yankee Zulu wrote: ↑ March 14th, 2025, 18:10Wuthering Waves added fishing event recently and **** this is probably one of the most interesting Ive seen in a video game. I think this is the only RPG that I played with fishing.
There was this Atari fishing game I played as a kid:

Breath of Fire III's fishing minigame was pretty fun. You had a rod and a lure. The neat thing was that you could make the bait more attractive to fish by doing a kind of Simon says using the controller pad to move the rod in certain directions, to a certain rhythm. There was definitely room for improvement/expansion of the concept but eh, it was a 90s-era Playstation game.
EDIT: As Tweed pointed out below, a 90s-era Playstation game, not SNES. SNES had Breath of Fires I and II.

I don't get this entire fishing pole meme fishing thing. I mean, seriously, standing there holding a stick hoping a fish will wander by and be dumb enough to take the bait? That's a completely inane way of doing things. Zero actual fisherman fish that way in real life.
The purpose is to spruce up the pacing of the game, and also to give you other ways to interact and inhabit the game world by doing something relatively mundane and chill. But it has to be fast paced enough so that you get a bite within 15 seconds or so. No one wants to sit in their lawn chair with their fishing pole leaned up against the pier railing for a couple hours only to not get something.Norfleet wrote: ↑ March 15th, 2025, 21:54I don't get this entire fishing pole meme fishing thing. Yes, but why is it always THIS particular fishing meme? Absolutely no actual fishermans actually do this. There are numerous OTHER, far more entertaining ways you could implement fishing. You could be fishing like normal people with nets, or proper adventureman fishing with explosives or electricity. Or just hilarity, like the example I mentioned above. Why this nonsensical pole-and-line fishing that nobody who actually cares about catching any fish uses?Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ March 15th, 2025, 22:01The purpose is to spruce up the pacing of the game, and also to give you other ways to interact and inhabit the game world by doing something relatively mundane and chill. Probably because it is easy and straight forward for the player to be walking and spot a river or a body of water, walk up to the edge of it, press a button and then their character whips out a rod and fishes on the spot, and then once the player becomes bored the character puts the rod away and carries on.Norfleet wrote: ↑ March 15th, 2025, 22:04Yes, but why is it always THIS particular fishing meme? For fishing with nets, would the player first have to find a boat and then row out further inland? Or is the player spawning a boat on the spot? Or is the player wading into shallow water with their net? Are players going to buy their character whipping out a fishing net like with a rod? Using explosives and electricity like from the character's combat abilities could be neat, though.
I don't see why NOT. It's FAR more plausible to carry a net in your pocket than it is to carry a ******* fishing rod. Where the **** was he even hiding that, up his ***?Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ March 15th, 2025, 22:22Are players going to buy their character whipping out a fishing net like with a rod?
I think the player should be able to transport an illegal Chinese fishing ship with deep nets in their inventory.
That would be far more immersive.
