What's TAA?
A FAQ here. Had to look it up too, not a fan of graphics stuff so I don't know most of the jargon.

I didn't understand any of that gobbledygook other than that I saw something about "motion blur", which is awful **** since it makes it impossible to see anything that is moving.
My bad, it's quite wordy indeed upon closer inspection.
It seems, TAA uses detail during motion as trade-off for computing shortcut.
Rendering maths are becoming more complex so more are inclined to use it, without fallback methods.
Turning it off would expose many rendering shortcomings, so it's trending toward making it always on.
That's what I managed to get out of it.
What a mess. I'll avoid using reddit as source in the future.

Spear makes some amount of sense. It's a standoff weapon that negates her disadvantage in reach, and doesn't require high strength to wield.
Yeah, that arrow is likely gonna fall like, hella short of the target area. It'd be funny if that was shown, where a bunch of archers including one chick fire a volley of arrows, and you see the arrows fly towards the enemy lines...with one arrow falling way, way short.
All of this is just wrongNorfleet wrote: ↑ March 14th, 2025, 06:37Spear makes some amount of sense. It's a standoff weapon that negates her disadvantage in reach, and doesn't require high strength to wield.
Seax þyrsteþ, gierneþ blōd!
Not at all. Some sort of polearm is traditionally the thing women get to use for home defense.

Current popular historical revisionism claims that women were found in a lot of graves that indicates them being warriors or chiefs. The problem is there's no actual way to prove the bones were always of women majority of the time. These are just assumptions made through a biased lens. Sadly, a lot of Norse media has accepted this as reality, and now we get shieldmaidens and shieeet. Same with the beserkers from that film Norseman. The idea they were mostly naked was written about them after they stopped existing in the culture.
Just looks like generic Viking slop, honestly. I want a game version of 13th Warrior or something actually interesting and explores Norse culture beyond Vikings.

I was told I was a natural with the quarterstaff when I was doing a type Kung fu years ago, due to that, though I am in no way an expert and had to stop due to my health, I can tell you for certain that spears and similar weapons still require a lot of muscle to wield and use effectively. I can see women wielding brooms and hitting people in the head with it as a home-weapon sort of thing, for example, but it will not be as deadly as if a man trained with staves wields it.Norfleet wrote: ↑ March 14th, 2025, 07:50Not at all. Spears are even more of the above (and things like halberds I am sure are even more in need of muscle), even if using a more oriental fighting style. Many movements need to be explosive, so to speak, which requires muscle.

It means the visuals will look like someone put Vaseline on your monitor.
And since this is mandatory for how things like hair and fur are rendered in Unreal you can't turn it off.

You're missing the point. No one's suggesting the average female will ever compete favorably against the average male. But if a weapon is only 20% strength, 30% skills, and 50% willingness to just stand in a formation with a bunch of other people in the face of oncoming cavalry, vs. a weapon that's 80% strength and 20% skills, clearly, women are less disadvantaged with the first weapon. Because, frankly, you don't need to be THAT strong to fatally impale someone with a pointy stick, particularly if they're already rushing at you. No one is going to outmuscle half a ton of heavy cavalry, anyway.DagothGeas5 wrote: ↑ March 14th, 2025, 17:49I was told I was a natural with the quarterstaff when I was doing a type Kung fu years ago, due to that, though I am in no way an expert and had to stop due to my health, I can tell you for certain that spears and similar weapons still require a lot of muscle to wield and use effectively. The naginata, a polearm with a blade on the end, requires less strength to use than the katana because of its length, so it became popular in the Edo period for the women of warrior clans to learn its use for self-defense. At least, that's what my Japanese dictionaries tell me, and I see no reason to distrust them. To be clear, none of them are claiming women fought with them on the battlefield alongside men.
There is no Norse culture beyond Vikings. Vikings is the only thing worth noting when it comes to history of Scandinavia.ThulsaDoomer wrote: ↑ March 14th, 2025, 09:02Current popular historical revisionism claims that women were found in a lot of graves that indicates them being warriors or chiefs.
