I don't know your stance on foreign language games, but this is non-woke:
I'm working on a full English translation for it if you wanted to wait however. I've got about 80 hours into it so far.

it's not like it's intentionally calling a woman a man, it's simply:Roguey wrote: ↑ February 19th, 2025, 13:01I can understand why referring to a woman as he would get their goat.WhiteShark wrote: ↑ February 19th, 2025, 07:30Right, but "he or she" itself is a feminist invention. when the sex of the person isn't specified, assume it's a dude, because dudes are the default

The game is so so.
This is a Hong Kong company which was later run by feminists who hate the harem ending. Their last game has no romance option.

Taiwan is under heavy Western influence, so that explains their recent behaviors.
If you want good non-woke games, it's best to seek those made by main land companies.

You can flirt with same-sex NPC and give them gifts.
Nioh 2: your character is referred to as they/them.
Maybe not very woke but still quite a bore.
Nioh 2 uses they/them because your character is custom and can be male or female.Team Ninja is cheap and decided on a one size fits all approach rather than separate he/she text based on what the player chose. Same reason your mother in the DLC calls you "my child" rather than "my son" or "my daughter".Kain wrote: ↑ February 20th, 2025, 06:48Black Desert: a bunch of girl bosses + Middle East theme girl warriors in heavy armor.

anytime someone says the combat in those games is great their nose should grow abruptly like a spear and possibly take out someone's eye
Which games have great combat in your opinion?rustys-name-is-kumar wrote: ↑ February 25th, 2025, 05:28whats more offensive about nioh/nioh 2 is that the game itself sucks

I wanted to share this one as I have not seen it in the list. It is the same creators that made Vampyr and, though I really liked Vampyr as a game and wanted to try this one, the black woman on the cover immediately made me suspicious as she, not only is a female and is black, but does have that same "girl boss" presence I saw in other works.
This is what I found that spoke of it:

Short answer: yes.
Long answer: Yes but there is much more than simply being a "woke" game and I think you could give it a try or at least look further into into if you're interested.
To be brief, the game has a very good atmosphere, and the dialogues are very well written too. The thing that may bother you, is that there are quite a number of gay couples, or "girl bosses", certainly more than I would expect from a story happening in this time period.
There are also some word changing, like a church being called a meetinghouse. I'm an atheist and even I can be bothered by it but hey, I can overlook this.
One thing I don't enjoy in the game is the combat, so if the quality of it is very important to you I'd honestly look elsewhere. It is repetitive, kind of boring really, and about 6 enemies throughout the whole game.
I still haven't finished it (playing on another platform) but overall, I'd rank it a nice 7.
If you are looking at this for atmosphere, I'd recommend you Alone in the Dark. Another 7 out of 10 but for me much better.
Meetinghouse is actually a proper term even for that time period, instead of "church" because that building was used for both religious purposes, and for non religious purposes for public meetings. My family has letters and journals from our ancestors dating back to the 1600s in the Colonial area and they used the word "meetinghouse" often. The term "meetinghouse" actually did originate around the 1600s in Colonial America, they used those buildings for religious meetings and for the public meetings.
I'd say slightly.
The main female character and sometimes the male one point out the injustice/imbalance that women face at the time, which is narratively reasonable.
If homosexuality offends you, there are references to a few lesbian couples in the game. Might be seen by some as a bit over the top to have it pop up as a recurring theme, but it never felt excessive or 'agenda preachy' to me.
My only gripe would be that the main female character on occasion will treat men who have done horrible things with disdain, but women who have done horrible things are treated with a bit more sympathy. Personally I only experienced this in an excessive preachy way a single time. It soured the moment for me but not the game. It was in keeping with the character however so there is atleast consistency.
Overall unless you are extremely sensitive to woke media conceptually, I'd say the content of the game when viewed through the lense of historical context and the nature of the characters, it's not very problematic and shouldn't spoil the game for you.
It's a very good story worth playing and none of the stuff mentioned here ruined the experience for me.
Seems like overall it is a good narrative and game, suffering from the same issues with repetitive combat Vampyr had (that are not an issue for me but it is good to know) but it all falls apart if it has "women can do no wrong", lesbians and women everywhere, black people without context for the time period it is supposedly in, and other such idiocies.
Thank you for existing!

Are you sure?
From what I've seen, the player character is referred to in dialogue either as "Hiddy" or "you."
The "Tale of Nioh" screens appear to use the proper male/female pronouns depending on whether the player character is male or female.
Female player character is referred to as "her" and "daughter":
Male player character is referred to as "him" and "son":

In general, the list is for the English version of games.
If there isn't an official English translation/Western localization, there isn't an easy way for me to scrutinize the story and dialogue without having to rely on potentially inaccurate fan translations/machine translations.
Though, I will concede, I've seen official translations/English localizations of many Asian games that appear to just be machine translations.
Still, at least it's "official." The point is, it's the words that an English player will see when he/she downloads and plays the game on Steam.
For non-English games/localizations, I can make note of anything I can verify without needing to speak/read the language (such as the presence of the "Gender star" in the German version of Conscript which is not present in the English version).
