Nau Engine - new game engine in development from Russia
Russians are making a new game engine which is apparently soon to be presented. Any coding nerds here? What do you make of it?

It's not open source from what I see. No links to a codebase. I did leave an email - will check it out when / if they get back. Not that I will be contributing to c++ in any capacity, but still interesting to see how they stack up against the competition.

I'd be wary of anything coming from Russia that was announced after 2022. Lots of these start-ups may end up being grift/embezzlement schemes designed to dupe the government now that it is desperately investing into its own IT/gaming industry.
I dunno. Would you rather have Slavjank or Goyslop?wndrbr wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 07:29I'd be wary of anything coming from Russia that was announced after 2022. Why is this a problem? Are you a khokhol by any chance? This **** is free. You can try it and if its bad you drop it.wndrbr wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 07:29I'd be wary of anything coming from Russia that was announced after 2022. I'm just disappointed with how a lot of these potentially interesting project ended up being bad, i.e. Смута for example.Yankee Zulu wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 08:34Why is this a problem? I also think that it is wrong to start developing long-term projects such as game engines for political reasons. Are they going to continue supporting it once the war ends? Would anyone even use this engine, when alternatives exist? Epic refused to join the sanctions because they are owned by Tencent, so it's still way easier to just use Unreal - there's already a ton of people who sort-of know how to use it, there's a ton of various tutorials and guides, you can buy pre-made assets from unreal asset store, etc.
Btw the 'russian engine' already exists, it's called Unigine. Though it's mostly used for simulation/engineering/CAD purposes. Wouldn't it be easier to contact these guys and offer them a bunch of money so they could adapt their tech to be more gamedev-friendly?

Well this is not government funded for one. My sources tell me it is being developed by an independent team with VK being an investor and manager. And the future depends on its performance. After all this is not a game, its an engine. A game engine cannot have political propaganda can it?
Watch your mouth, BUCKO.
Oh so YOU are the KHOKHOL here. Looks a ****** as well. Updated my journal.
General game engines need 5-10 years of development before they are actually useful to plebians.

They claim to have some innovative solution that will allow most major languages to be used for scripting.
Scripting languages are a popular, but bad, engine design paradigm. Any new engine with one is in the "probably made by amateurs with low experience" category.Statesman wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 15:45General game engines need 5-10 years of development before they are actually useful to plebians.

Pretty hard to escape them (outside the rare in-house engine) these days, but between the machine translation (from the original Russian) and their vague general statements, guess we'll have to wait and see what they actually end up implementing.J1M wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 15:49Scripting languages are a popular, but bad, engine design paradigm. There's not a huge difference in 2024.Norfleet wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 08:06I dunno. Yes, but the point of a new engine is to do something better/different.Statesman wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 15:58Pretty hard to escape them (outside the rare in-house engine) these days, but between the machine translation (from the original Russian) and their vague general statements, guess we'll have to wait and see what they actually end up implementing.J1M wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 15:49Scripting languages are a popular, but bad, engine design paradigm. A properly working open-source 3D game engine would certainly be better than anything else in the market atm.J1M wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 17:49Yes, but the point of a new engine is to do something better/different.Statesman wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 15:58Pretty hard to escape them (outside the rare in-house engine) these days, but between the machine translation (from the original Russian) and their vague general statements, guess we'll have to wait and see what they actually end up implementing.J1M wrote: ↑ October 5th, 2024, 15:49

lol xD
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

It seems to me that Unity and Unreal so robust and so heavily documented that there is little point in trying to develop a brand new engine from scratch that won't be as stable, won't have as many features, and won't have as much documentation and guides and knowledge on how to do things. Only might make sense for a top of the line company like Blizzard or Nintendo or Square that is trying to save 5% or 10% in licensing fees (which adds up when you are selling games on the scale of millions) and you have the money and the rep to acquire the best programmers.
The more options devs and ultimately we the players have the better.
No linux support, and unfortunately doesn't play well with wine it seems. Oh well, back to wokot.
It looks like Nau engine is based on Dagor engine which is the one Gaijin has been using for its War Thunder.

The article doesnt mention it but theres a comment below it with info.Apparently VKontakte will be using Dagor as a basis for their Nau Engine, at least if Google Translate’s camera translation of this video are accurate:
Guessing that Dagor was opened up so that code transfer could happen without violating sanctions. Whatever the reason, at least we got a AAA game engine open-sourced in the process.

And there are copyright notices for Gaijin Games in the code

No need to. Use Redot Engine instead, is a well made wokot fork without the woke ****. You can move your project from wokot to redot easily.
discord? NO WAY! Use Mumble instead!

Last time I checked up on it it was a revenge fork with the logo changed. Did they add anything to it over the last couple of months?Pizza wrote: ↑ February 18th, 2025, 23:13No need to.
