Valve bans all Steam games that force players to watch advertisements

https://www.eurogamer.net/valve-bans-al ... rtisements
Valve has implemented new rules around advertising, explicitly prohibiting games that force players to watch in-game ads.

The new rules from Valve - available online and first reported by Gaming on Linux - confirm that whilst cross-promotion and product placement are permitted, games that force players to watch or engage with advertising in order to play are not.

Nor should developers use advertising as a "way to provide value to players, such as giving players a reward for watching or engaging with advertising in their game".

"Developers should not utilise paid advertising as a business model in their game, such as requiring players to watch or otherwise engage with advertising in order to play, or gating gameplay behind advertising," the rules explain.

"If your game's business model relies on advertising on other platforms, you will need to remove those elements before shipping on Steam. Some options you could consider include switching to a single purchase 'paid app', or making your game free to play with optional upgrades sold via Microtransactions or Downloadable Content (DLC)."

Whilst I suspect most of us would associate this kind of behaviour with mobile games more than those available on Steam, Valve clearly thought it necessary to clarify, in clear English, "what is and is not supported on Steam".

Developers are also not allowed to charge other developers for access to Steam features, such as sale pages, bundles, store fronts, or franchise pages.

Last week, Valve quietly implmented a useful new Steam feature warning users - and potential purchasers - how long it's been since an early access game last received an update.

Mediocre or bad games can still have parts that are good.

i feel like this is more so because its more difficult for valve to get a cut of the profits than it is to benefit players. with dlc the transaction happens on steam so it’s easy to take their cut but an ad deal can take place off of steam thus leaving steam without a cut of the profit. plus i find pay $5 to get an extra life! way more annoying than watching an ad for a game i dont have to pay anything for

Lying hypocritical ******! Steam deletes negative reviews for games with ESG and DEI funding under " terms of service " violation and pretends to be "with gamers" by this cheap ****. Better make steam work on windows 7, there is more games that perfectly work on windows 7 than trannys that valve celebrate and support every year!

I use a mod in American Truck Sim to replace logos and billboards with real companies and ads

It's immersive and cool

Are there any games that did this? Or is this just preemptive to keep mobile style transactions out of them?

Could be motivated by a genuine desire to preserve the fun of the medium, but if we think it was pragmatically motivated then perhaps the fear is that you will see randomly changing ads in a game that could be in violation of a law somewhere and Steam getting sued by a state for selling that game in that country.

It does work on W7, the "It won't work anymore of W7" timer reached zero and yet...it still works, lol.
Unsure for how long, though.

Immersive for THAT game, but imagine them showing up in your fantasy world.
What's good though is that you could put them IN with mods, but shouldn't have to take them out.

Didn't Steam implement a policy that if you sell a game with a promise of DLCs and don't deliver, you need to give partial refunds? That sounded pretty epic, too

I was truly scared that I would have to stop using Steam or finally upgrade my home computer (a 10 year old i5) with that deadline approaching. What a suprise to see the number of days reach ZERO with nothing happening. Everything the same at old Steam.
It's a shame I practically stopped playing games.

Why did they censor that kcd2 review but not ****** joke reviews? Steam is becoming so arbitrary with their rules, how long until they outright ban people from ever playing their games for saying no no words?

Because ******* will have reported it.
Joke reviews annoy them much less than the truth.
