Always pirate every video game you can/never support any developer

Post by Oyster Sauce »

Seven years ago I pirated KCD 1. I liked it a lot. Not once did I consider buying the game on sale or whatever to support the developers, even though I respected them for sticking to their guns when they received negative press or even had outlets outright refusing to cover their game. This past month it was revealed that everybody who did buy it personally funded gay sex cutscenes, anti-white and anti-Christian propaganda, and everything else in that piece of ****.

A video game came out and you liked it? Remember these helpful pieces of info:
-team members will leave before the next game even starts production
-new people will be hired
-team members who stay on are going to get older and therefore more gay and more ********
-developers are financially incentivized to hide their anti-you propaganda up until the launch of the game and beyond
-99.99% of developers would want you dead or in prison if they knew you posted here
-developers are your personal slaves and they should work for free to support your hobby
-you will save like a thousand dollars by pirating 15 brand new games
-developers are inherently evil and they're all trying to betray you -- yes, you -- personally
-it is a good thing when development studios die before they get to make a sequel to your favorite game

"B-but my #based one-man niche indie developer!" I hear you say. Dwarf Fortress added ****** dwarves the moment it came to Steam and and Tarn started making a shitload of money. Money corrupts people and makes them evil and gay. The best games are made by poor mentally ill freaks living in poverty. Why would you want to deprive them of their creative environment? It doesn't make any sense. Do not give them money. Don't even say nice things about their games because you might inadvertently inspire others to buy them. They are sub-human and you should treat them as such.

You take your entertainment for granted.

We live a time where because entertainment is so easily accessible, people undervalue art and the amount of time and effort required to produce it. It is also important to recgnoize that the only reason why we had so much entertainment generated in the 20th century was because we were still riding off of the wave from the post-WW2 looting/debt and modernization. Now that we peaked, line does not go up anymore, and we are going down the decline period as the cost of living outpaces the rise in wages, people's disposable incomes are shrinking. Zoomers drink less than any prior generation because they can't afford to. Gaming is one of the most cost effective hobbies a man can have, but do not think that it too will remain immune as the economy worsens. People aren't upgrading to PS5s, they are sticking with their PS4s. And a war could always happen which cuts us off from our overseas produced electronics and drive up prices even further. America is becoming increasingly balkanized and infrastructure is breaking down, old engineers are retiring and no one is replacing them. We have lost the capability to produce Saturn V rockets and go to the moon. And so on. Beware thinking that just because it is easy to be enrertained now that it will remain so in the future.

We have already been through this with the music industry where it died within the span of a decade. You had Michael Jackson and people thought music was the biggest thing ever after the Golden Age of Hollywood. People thought David Bowie was crazy for thinking that line wouldn't always go up and securitizing his assets just in case. And then what? Napster happened, and within 10 years the live music scene died. There are no solo musicians or small bands being able to grow anymore, only legacy acts of 70 year olds faking it are left on the road and even they are making hardly any money. Hollywood soundtracks are gutter tier. For the most part the only good music you are seeing nowadays is coming from Japanese video game soundtracks.

Comics were also huge. Every Marvel comic was selling 100,000 issues PER month, and they were sold on newstands at the local store where mom and dad could see them. Now? Dead industry in the West, where Marvel is lucky if an issue sells 5,000 copies, and they are sold in some comics shop run by a fat smelly guy in an alley on the bad side of town no parent would ever want to drive their kids to. Marvel Comics and DC are propped up to extract IPs from for use in making movies.

Book industry? Same deal. Was once big and is now dead, with only maybe 200 fantasy authors out there actually able to make a living off of it today. Current situation is that indie authors write on their own free time after work, but they can only do that for so long before they are unable to continue justifying it.

Those are just three examples. Gaming is ostensibly the current biggest thing right now (certainly won't remain so indefinitely), and yet in Japan we have already seen the extinction of many JRPG studios during the 2000s and then VN studios in the 2010s. In the West indie dev live paycheck to paycheck and then have to bail out because they jist can't support a family like that. Point is you should support the devs you like if you want them to make more of the same games you like. Now obviously it isn't possible or practical to pay for everything you like, and I am not saying you shluld be a consoomerist who didn't save to support a family, but if there is that one current studio you are a big fan of and no one else is making games like theirs, then you should give them an indication that they should continue doing what they are doing and make more. I bought Trails games, Monochrome Mobius, Eiyuden Chronicle, Granblue Fantasy Relink, etc because the fact is that the JRPG and VN genres I love is drying up and I want these last holdouts to keep the lighthouses lit a little while more.

Games have reached peak saturation. We're at the point now where games are just regurgitating the same old template and the same old ideas ad-nauseam. The indie scene is especially bad at this, with millennial devs describing their games in terms of "-likes". "Oh, MY game is a Metroid and rogue-like!. My game is like Resident Evil and Silent Hill!". They consciously start development aiming to be copies of those games, which limit the ways they can actually innovate and do something new. I'm of the opinion that the old Resident Evils and Silent Hills are pretty overrated, and newer titles like Eternal Darkness were better. Because those devs innovated, they tried something new and it paid off. Maybe not monetarily, but it paid off in terms of game design.

We are perpetually stuck trying to copy the 90s and we're addicted to that nostalgia. So why bother playing a """New""" game, when you can just play the originals they're all trying to copy?. Every game released today could be made playable on 20 year old hardware, with enough cutbacks. You can create a Kangdom Cum Deliburance Two equivalent in the Morrowind engine, if you tried hard enough. So when you're this spoiled for choice, why bother paying for any game?.

I understand the sentiment and I even used to be more inclined to do so in the past.
But nowadays, I'd much rather support someone or something I like through crowdfunding than "buying" the privilege to copypaste a folder from a storefront's servers to my PC.

All good games are lightning in a bottle, happy accidents that cannot be reproduced, even by the same teams that made the good game, nor by the inevitable wave of copycats.

Now we have predatory monetization, woke faggotry and systemic incompetence to deal with on top of a mad rush to the lowest common denominator as games go mainstream.

No matter who I give my money to, my ROI is always shittier games and less respect for me personally and as a customer. This trend is clear and undeniable for many years now. AAA games are all slop now without exception.

The last games I bought were Underrail, and the rad codex games (not the latest one). I haven’t paid for a game in years and I’m glad I didn’t. Things have only gotten worse since then. Im incredibly ****** off at what has happened to this hobby and what I want now is total developer destruction. I want them to pay for ruining my hobby.

Sad but true.

A couple of points I would contest.

1. Americans are absolutely willing and able to go into debt to buy a PS5 if it had compelling games on it.

2. Gaming is already not the biggest thing. The biggest thing right now is video shorts. People spend an absurd amount of time watching those. This is a blessing because it implies some sort of crash or reset is possible sooner.

And yet, as far as I know, the manga industry is booming despite automated translation and file sharing being easier than ever. The state of current year western comics is well known: they've become wordy leftist propaganda pieces that nobody wants to read. This tells me that the problem is the quality of the product, not piracy.

Pirating woke and trash games still supports these people. One, even if you hate them, it's a bit like exposing yourself to radiation to own the libs. And two, just by the games being played and talked about more, positively or negatively, you're helping the developer.

Being able to earn money from a game or from a kickstarter is needed to finance its existence in the first place. Even tiny teams like the Underrail devs will be quitting their jobs to make the game for over a year, which really wouldn't be possible if they didn't get any money from them. Also means it can have non-copy-pasted art assets, and be more expansive and have better gameplay. That's why there needs to be at least a crowd of people who will pay for them.

Support decent indie devs, if you can.
However, prepare for disappointment.
