I like it and it doesn't seem "slow" at all to me. Sometimes lengthier exposition is needed to frame and give context to a topic, especially one where historical knowledge of it is necessary to understand some contemporary event that concerns it. Not enough context will just leave people with the notion "So what?". That fella who claimed that "Brevity is the soul of wit" did so in a play of about 12,000 words and generally wrote and directed his plays for the amusement of filthy uneducated commoners who packed in to witness his works while stood about in a muddy, littered pit, who ****** and shat where they stood when they had the urge and did so while holding bushels of rotten vegetables which they carried to pelt at the actors when they found themselves getting bored. Not sure I'd take that advice overly seriously, maybe as a stand-up comic, but not as someone narrating a essay.
