Is Kingdom Come: Deliverance Christian?
Is Kingdom Come: Deliverance Christian?
Not sure why people are acting like they have been blindsided. People parroted "but KCD depicts Christianity!", but then the primary quest everyone talks about is Henry and a "priest" taking God's name in vain, getting drunk, and then committing adultery with a bar maid. And the characters in that game sure like to throw "God" this and "God" that around, but while still having mistresses or going around murdering people. The series was never sincere from the heart from the get go.
So it's not a Christian game unless there's no sinning and crimes? How would you make a historical Christian game?Val the Moofia Boss wrote: β January 26th, 2025, 06:13Not sure why people are acting like they have been blindsided. Father Godwin was written as a foil to the church.rusty_shackleford wrote: β January 22nd, 2025, 07:27To people who say kcd isn't a Christian game: what would you change to make it one?
Father Godwin? I've seen him criticized repeatedly and I don't get it. He's a criticism of Christianity without the Church as much as he criticizes the Church. I'd have trouble believing he wasn't written by someone with at least some Christian history education. He makes valid points while simultaneously being just as bad as what he criticizes for other reasons.
Being able to sin? Like oyster said, you can even do a quest to repent for your sins.
What must be changed about KCD to make it Christian?
There's no obligation to do this at all:the primary quest everyone talks about is Henry and a "priest" taking God's name in vain, getting drunk, and then committing adultery with a bar maid.
rusty_shackleford wrote: β January 20th, 2025, 18:51Nope. I just did the quest a couple days ago, he doesn't tell you but you get a lead that points you towards the book in Rattay and have to go follow up with the scribe.TKVNC wrote: β January 20th, 2025, 18:50Either you go whoring, and drinking...
Or you make him break the sanctity of the confessional. Which would have had him defrocked, or sent to penance.
I did it by failing the speech check, went to the bar with him, talked, refused to drink. You talk to the bailiff outside after this.
A game where you cannot sin is as un-Christian as a game where you must sin.
[edit]
The fact that KCD has you reflect on your sins that you made Henry do and allow you to repent puts it head and shoulders above any other game I'm aware of, btw.

I am not claiming that Christians are infallible (everyone is by nature a sinner who must be saved), and to depict them as such in fiction would be unwise. But in KCD I never got the feeling that the game was made with a Christianic worldview. Just because a name is slapped on it does not make it so. It is pretty hard to find any (high production value) game that has that feeling. To contrast with other series, the original Star Wars movie trilogy, the LotR novel, the Eternal Dream book series, etc, never invoke the name Jesus Christ or etc, but you can feel the Christianic worldview permeating the work.Oyster Sauce wrote: β January 26th, 2025, 06:18So it's not a Christian game unless there are no sinning and crimes?

Being a proper Christian should be hard. It's entirely possible that some of what makes KCD a Christian game was accidental, but it does all fall together in a way no other game does. Vavra simultaneously saying KCD isn't Christian because you can do something un-Christian while saying Henry isn't gay because you can engage in sodomy is β I would say idiotic, but he knows what he's doing β it's duplicitous. Henry acts like a good Christian in KCD for most of the game when you aren't making the choices, that's his default character state, much like him being heterosexual is.
Having a gay monk is also not un-Christian, btw. As long as you can encourage him to not act upon it and he recognizes it's his burden to bear and resist temptation.

Many of Jan Hus's criticisms of the church that are parroted by Godwin were entirely valid. You'd have a point here if they decided to make Godwin a paragon of faith, but they didn't. He's a violent alcoholic whoremonger.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: β January 26th, 2025, 06:23I am not claiming that Christians are infallible (everyone is by nature a sinner who must be saved), and to depict them as such in fiction would be unwise. It may have been their intent to insult Christianity with Godwin perhaps by having a poor understanding of it. Atheists are notoriously bad at attacking Christianity compared to actual Christians: "Haha, what if we made the priest who attacks the church also be a sinner?"
If a protestant had wrote it, Godwin would probably be pious.
