Bad games that you enjoy

Post by Tweed »

For the longest time I didn't know that most people really hated Dungeon Siege, but I used to play it all the time online and with my brother. I also installed some of the bigger siegelets and QoL stuff. I still get a bit of fun out of it, but it's true when compared to Diablo 2 that the game was one step forward and three steps back and everyone had a raging shitfit because they couldn't click click click the monsters to make them die. How ironic that twenty years later Jack Me Into The Device is a genre unto itself and people can't get enough of auto battlers.

Do you just mean "Games that are popularly shat on online" rather than "objectively bad games I still enjoy nonetheless?"

Portable Ops is very rough around the edges but it did a lot of things better than the official Kojima attempt at a PSP exclusive.
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

Objectively bad games.
While you were playing it, did you actually consider it a bad game but kept playing for some other reason, or did you retcon your opinion after seeing that people on the internet don't like it?

i used to enjoy playing Horizons a lot even if there was no endgoal in the game. i really like the in-depth crafting system in it, made it feel like that all of the gear you earned or made yourself have actual progression too

This is the one for me. Was just thinking of the likes of Metin 2 and 4Story. Not sure how good or bad they were, but though I enjoyed them, the more I played other things the more I realized those games were either terribly predatory or very grindy unless you payed.
Metin 2 was the first game, alongside World of Warcraft, where I saw two people making a grand celebration for everyone to attend because the players irl were getting married after meeting while playing. These things and just killing wolves and "ninja bandits" with some music in the background made the game great for me (those meteorites were terribly time-consuming to destroy alone though).

I liked the first BioShock and Infinite too. The gunplay on the first one is very rough but the atmosphere and the way the story is presented make up for it a thousand times. I haven't played the eedition, nor have I watched any videos about it. Maybe it was really ****** like one of the GTA remakes that came out some time back? Not really sure.

Infinite was cool as **** tho. The sniper felt very smooth, the gun on gun action was fast paced and there was always something going on, I remember being able to materialize new cover with Elizabeth and having those lines to relocate somewhere faster - the game was constantly adding new stuff. Not to mention the aesthetic of both games was superb. And very different too. Columbia was one awesome sky city. I'm not sure why they wanted to add time-traveling and multiple dimensions to the story, but it was a big mind **** while playing it. I see what they were going for and I like it for what it is. On paper it sounds stupid, but if you experience it from the perspective of the player it's a whole other thing.

I wouldn't say any of those games are bad, but I can see why people can hate on them.

Going back and playing it later on makes me see more of its flaws. I still like it, but it's got major issues that it shouldn't have considering Diablo 2 was already out. It tried to correct some of them in the expansion, but it still did it in a half-assed way. The community tried fixed some of those problems as well, but in the end DS is basically an auto battler where you push the potion button. It becomes more interactive if you're a mage, but that's about it. It also had a very colorful set of monsters.

I go back and play Bioshit 1 and 2 once in awhile when I go on an imsim binge. They're playable, but not great. Bioshit infinite is one of the worst pieces of **** I've ever played though, I'd never revisit that one, ever.

Some people can enjoy any game regardless of quality. That doesn't mean those games are good.
Sometimes you can enjoy a game despite its quality for reasons outside the game, such as because one is playing while friends watch.
Sometimes aspects of a game can be enjoyable but not enough to offset the overall quality of the game.

Psychotoxic from 2004. I'm convinced I'm the only person on this planet who loves it. Giga obscure eurotrash FPS. Objectively bad in every way possible, except for soundtrack. Also literally unplayable on newer systems. But I still enjoy the absurd plot, campy dialogues and voice-acting, strange art-direction and early 2000's atmosphere/visuals. And big-titty goth girl as MC.

Most gameplay features like movement and shooting are so bad, I'm still not used to them after playing the game for so long. But sometimes devs tried to come up with something interesting for certain levels. Some ideas worked, some didn't. At least it kept the game a bit interesting by mixing basic locations/mechanics with whacky stuff. And I guess that's what I like the most about Psychotoxic. Originality. It tried, and I appreciate the attempt.

Psychotoxic is a game that could have only come from the game dev bubble that existed in Germany during the early to late 2000's, which allowed for a ton of experimentation. i remember seeing screenshots of it and thinking 'wow this looks neat', but then reviews for it came out and it got lambasted for being buggy (and in some cases, hard to even run due to driver issues) and the core mechanics being half-baked at best.

the diverse level design is one of the few good aspects of the game, but since the game itself is incredibly raw in terms of production quality, it'll only attract the attention of FPS grognards who want to sample every FPS ever the sun

There were way more experimental games made in the late 90s to mid 00s than there are now. Which is crazy considering how many games are pumped out now by indies just making cargo cult slop copies.

Gothic 3 as an water mage and two worlds 1. When it launched, was bellow average. Now, if compared to modern games, is a masterpiece.
