Still should have a stirrup, though. Only the lightest hand-drawn ones didn't. And that one would take a VERY strong man to hand-draw those arms.
Few women could do it even with the stirrup and lever, though. It'll be a 200 pound plus draw or so and even with mechanical advantage and the legs, it'll be hard.
Windlass heavy crossbows with steel arms could have a 1000 pound draw.

It's easier to shoot, especially when used on a rest. Pretty accurate with little practice.TKVNC wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 14:18It's remarkable that people actually think Crossbows are an 'easier' weapon than a bow; the reason they became more popular than bows was never ease of use - it was raw power
The bow is neither of those things, especially war bows. You have to be a strong ************ to hold the string back and aim well.
The strength difficulty of the two weapons is different, but in the same range.
Also, larger crossbows are VERY front-heavy. There's a reason why they used a kind of slim post/tiller-stock that you put under your armpit and not a modern shoulder stock.

Nah, using a strirrup on a crossbow and pulling is very real, there was many ways to help this process too as it requires remarkable power.Tangerine wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 14:23Never having used one, I'd have thought it'd be easier since you didn't have to sustain the pull yourself when aiming. As for bows, you don't really 'sustain' the draw for long, you release shortly after drawing it

Hand-drawn (only the lightest hunting weapons)
Held with foot in stirrup, belt with hooks so you can assist hands with legs & back (light wood crossbows).
Held with foot in stirrup, lever cocked. Again, arms and back (legs not so much for this).
Some sort of mechanical system like a separate windlass. Requires less strength but is slow AF.

Which makes sense, since it was written by that ****** Emil Pagliwhateverthefuck.
If you're not a console moron, you can sense something's off with the notes, but you're railroaded into continuing to do things and can't start a quest-investigation.
If you figure **** out early yourself because you're a player with a brain, investigate, then find and dump the "object" at the feet of the now-known traitor, there's zero response, and that's the opposite of what WOULD happen if you did that.
You have to let the traitor continue "deceiving" you until the plot figures out what you as the player already know.
You have to let the plot do what it wants in the order that it wants or else it doesn't advance.
It's ********.

Hey, at least Oblivion had dungeons and magic. I can't help but notice KCD is a movie game, punctuated by stuff which autists had begged for on the ESF general board. They asked for all this "realistic" **** that made its way into KCD, which just looks boring imho.Shady wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 14:33The audacity of calling another game boring while going trough the Oblivion gate number 3754. I think Oblivion is owed an apology.

They banned like 10 accounts I made and deleted all messages asking about the controversies as soon as they could before eventually switching to follower-only chat where you had to have been a follower for at least 10 minutes to send messages. I suspect at some point they started using manual filters to catch certain messages and flag them for mod approval before being sent, but I don't use Twitch so maybe it was just an automatic feature of the site.
This was said in the final 2 seconds of the 1-2 hour long stream.

I thought ease of use was a benefit as in you could train a group of men to use crossbows in a matter of weeks versus the years it took to become proficient with the bow, but I guess I was wrong. Both require upper body strength to use properly.TKVNC wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 14:18It's remarkable that people actually think Crossbows are an 'easier' weapon than a bow; the reason they became more popular than bows was never ease of use - it was raw powerRand wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 14:05It's a sort of medium crossbow. Naturally, ugly and disgusting black/brown people would be amazed at the (first) sight of a White person and take pictures.
Naturally, beautiful and noble White people would be disgusted and horrified at the (first) sight of a non-white person and make sure that no other White man or woman would ever have to endure the same traumatic experience by completely erasing all occurrences from history.
Not a matter of weeks - crossbows were the "high tech" weapon of the time, so you needed a certain degree of mechanical skill to use one, if only because you needed to have the knowledge on how to maintain and fix it. While you could probably teach someone how to arm a crossbow quicker than you could train an archer (that being a lifelong commitment), effective crossbowmen still required a lot of training to be able to sustain a fast and accurate rate of fire, especially under pressure.Tweed wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 15:10I thought ease of use was a benefit as in you could train a group of men to use crossbows in a matter of weeks versus the years it took to become proficient with the bow, but I guess I was wrong. Both require upper body strength to use properly.
And while crossbows required strength, it was nowhere near the level necessary to use a warbow - there's stories floating around about people picking fights with archers in taverns and dying from a single punch.
Another aspect that is rarely talked about is the fact that crossbows were expensive to make, so you wouldn't be giving them to some random levy hick that walked off the field with a pitchfork and a pot for a helmet.
Also, it helps to think of crossbows as the medieval "shotgun" - while they could launch a projectile with much larger force than a bow, darts being so heavy (to withstand the forces being applied to them) affected the distance they could travel, so you were mostly stuck firing crossbows horizontally, while you could fire a bow over the heads of your other troops.

Crossbows are way easier than bows, though. Like comically so. Even using every modern trick available like using wrist trigger releases and compound bows it still makes them far more difficult to operate and aim than a crossbow. If your crossbow is properly sighted and you have taken care of it (waxed the rails and string) it’s almost effortless.TKVNC wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 14:18It's remarkable that people actually think Crossbows are an 'easier' weapon than a bow; the reason they became more popular than bows was never ease of use - it was raw powerRand wrote: ↑ January 17th, 2025, 14:05It's a sort of medium crossbow.
