On the one hand, a spiritual successor to Freelancer sounds great. On the other hand, Lovecraftian is code for indie slop.

It is if you happen to be looking for a modernized Freelancer, otherwise I wouldn't say it has enough content to be considered good. I last played it several updates ago and since it is still in EA, I could see it getting there eventually. Surprised Trainwiz hasn't managed to get some (Freelancer/Skyrim/Morrowind) modders to help him flesh it out.
