Computer RPG Games with Abstract Magic

Post by Lich »

Most magics in nowadays computer cRPG games are analogs of existing weapons like guns and bombs. What rpgs have abstract spells that aren't bullets and bombs in bright colors?

Games with psionic attacks.
Games with mind control
Games with magic based on more abstracted game mechanics like moon phase, faction standing with deities, etc.

Not sure what you are looking for. Most skills, abilities, weapons need to be in a context that people can understand.

Imagine playing a game with abstracted attacks based on something you have no basis in reality to understand. Might as well just be a RNG for a random outcome of the action, if its even an attack isn't certain.

Dominions games inspired by Arse Magica--an RPG game--have master enslave that enslaves the entire enemy army or magic duel that makes a random opposing mage fight the caster. Infra Arcana has a spell that causes enemies to fight any nearby creature and a device that teleports all visible enemies to random squares. Caverns of Xaskazien 2 has a deity ability that teleports you to another level without increasing dlvl. There are many ways to make interesting abstract magic, but most spells in popular rpg games are fire balls and bright lazers.

Larian's games. Mind reading in Divinity 2. Environmental control spells, disguises, etc., in DOS1/2, general D&D stuff in BG3.

Maybe games should have emotional damage attacks.

The quality of your insults physically harms the monsters.
