What is an RPG?

I chose all of the above since I can't be assed to make a full blown 3,000 word essay describing what exactly is an rpg.
Any definition that doesn't include games like Wizardry is wrong.
Caring about what is an RPG is a big waste of life. Nowadays even games like Hogwarts Legacy is called an RPG, for example.

I think the idea at the old place that the RPG genre is a collection of elements not all of which are necessarily present in every instance is correct. For example, I think being turn-based is a core RPG element, but RTwP RPGs exist. Genres are hard to define in a strict sense but it's very easy to categorize individual mechanics.
Litmus tests:

- Any definition that excludes Wizardry fails
- Any definition that includes Disco Elysium or Pentiment fails
RPGs are games that allow the player to overcome challenges by accumulating bigger numbers rather than greater skill.

I am conflicted between: "all of the above", "none of the above" and "other". I guess that's "**** poll definition".
Here you go. My first shitpost as the first post on the brand new forum :-)
Promise to do better in the future (providing my interest in crpgs is there).

Imho it should try to emulate the atmosphere of P&P games as best as possible, which also means a ton of stats. The old rpgs do this better than modern ones. I am playing Witcher 3 atm and while it's a great game it's more of an action adventure than an rpg to me and tbh that goes for basically any modern "rpg". Also if you have any other definition of rpg ur gay
MDK?
Grounded?
Fallout Shelter?
Every game I play nowadays. It sounds crazy, but it's true. Even games I'm not sure about end up being "RPG" plus some other descriptor. Adventure, Action, Simulation, Open World, Roguelike.
A game that is not:
Sports
Simulation
Strategy (real-time or turn-based)
Cards
Action
Shooter
etc.
Other than what it's not, it's not well defined, imo.
Usually they have a plot and story of some sort.
Usually they have stats.
Exploration and items.
Some sort of skill classes.
****, I dunno...

You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

Then so is Metroid, because aside from the construction, they're not that different.

Check out the two guys being wrong.
Now I don't think Terraria (as great of a game it is) IS an RPG, but if you're gonna say it is, then Metroid gets in, too.
It's a side-scroller where you find new weapons down in the areas and also get increases to your few stats also by finding and using stuff hidden down there.
Which was I describing there? Terraria or Metroid?
Super Mario doesn't make it in by the Terraria definition because you can't keep most of the stuff you find and the only stat of note is lives. So it's an action game, despite looking superficially the same.

Calling two games similar because they have weapons and stat increases may be enough to hoodwink a mentally challenged man who hasn't played either of them, but it's not enough to fool me, a mentally challenged man who has.Rand wrote: β November 28th, 2023, 00:26

Whatever. Neither is an RPG is the point. Because they're basically the same gameplay.Oyster Sauce wrote: β November 28th, 2023, 00:37Calling two games similar because they have weapons and stat increases may be enough to hoodwink a mentally challenged man who hasn't played either of them, but it's not enough to fool me, a mentally challenged man who has.Rand wrote: β November 28th, 2023, 00:26

Terraria is an RPG where the advancement of statistics is in the form of equipment upgrades.
It differs from Minecraft in that it has a quest. Minecraft isn't an RPG because there is no quest.
