They control the design of the game and the intent behind how it is played. Past that, "controlling" people is libtard.

It is also Microsoft mentality to not consider there will be legitimate issues such forced systems cause that actually harm a play experience (something that has already been discussed to death here, including my point about KCD and its issues with auto save). MS knows best... oh wait.. "we didn't think of that".

By simply allowing an option in this case at the start of the game which is designed as you suggest would solve the issue. Developers provide the "true" experience, but then allow an option to get around it "just in case" someone doesn't want to risk that intended design causing an issue with their specific situation.

Everyone is happy. Developers design with the original intent, players play according to it, or choose to mess up that intent with its own consequences.
