A little AI fairy companion in a game that you can talk to and ask questions would be neato
You cheated, the instructions do NOT say "follow the road south past Mzulft". They say "follow the road south past the Dwemer ruins". Hint: there are two dwemer ruins on the map.

I covered up the destination location(you wouldn't have these on your map yet). This is the result:

That might be a journal like in Morrowind
someone post the collage of screenshots of all the ****** up directions morrowind has please
You mean the tiny handful that are easily navigatable?
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

What if we made this AI companion appear as a Pointer at the top of the screen? That suggested the best direction for you to follow...

That might be a good idea; it might also be able to tell you where to go on the map, so you can tell instantly...
What if we just install fast-travel mod, and it'll just work?

"we gave him bad directions as part of an assassination contract… AS A JOKE!!!"
:notsureif:
Or as a "mistake", because we all know that everything goes perfect in the real world right?
If you're going to order an assassination on someone I sure hope you know how to at least provide directions to the assassination location.
Where's the fun in that?

We got quest markers and fast travel as the solution to this. Can't say it was an improvement.

The only redeeming thing about all of that is that you're supposed to find the location on that island, so despite the poor directions, you'll still find it sooner or later by process of elimination.

Also levitation helps a lot.

I don't mind screw ups like that. Sure, its confusing... but then it isn't like people don't give bad directions from time to time and you have to figure it out yourself.

Honestly, I would design stuff like this on purpose, but maybe attach it to gameplay systems (reputation, logistic recall failure rolls, etc...). Player gets lost, so what... figure it out.
"we gave him bad directions as part of an assassination contract… AS A JOKE!!!"
:notsureif:
The bad directions aren't even being given by a character, though. They're in the journal, unsourced, so represent the internal thoughts of the player character.

I am pretty sure that the journal entries are at least intended to be based on the information given by characters in the game world. If that's not what happened, that's an oversight. It makes me wonder what actual information is conveyed to the player outside of the journal, and if it matches up.

I still remember one of Ultima IX quests having direction like 'cross the bridge east of town, yadda yadda...'. It all sounded like the place was just out of the city itself. I cannot remember the exact direction but they definitely weren't as elaborate as the ones in Morrowind.

There were people that played Ultima IX? :notsureif:
Out of all series to kill themselves, the death of Ultima has to be one of the sadder ones.
But I think that the main difference here is that Morrowind is held up as a classic in its own right, whereas Ultima IX is widely regarded as borderline unplayable.
