Speaking of EXP, has it bothered anyone else that you only gain EXP off of successful skillchecks? Why shouldn't I get EXP from failed skill checks as well? Don't people learn from mistakes? Why aren't there more games that "reward" failure, instead of making it an absolute failure state beyond which you cannot continue?

Recent example being when in Wrathfinder you fail your will save against Minagho and beat the **** out of Stanton in a demonic rage. Later, he gives you a cloak that boosts will saves. You don't get that cloak if you succeed the will save.

Final Fantasy XIV had a "hunt log" where you got a lot of exp for killing 2 or 3 or 4 particular creatures you hadn't killed before. Years ago the strategy for levelling up until level 16 was to go around checking off the hunt log. Once you reached level 16, you then just went back to town and queued for dungeon finder over and over until you hit level cap.

The Suikoden and Trails series have exp scaling, where characters underlevelled compared to the mobs you are fighting receive a lot more exp, whereas overlevelled characters receive far less exp. So it's fast and easy to catch up neglected characters, and difficult to overlevel characters you play with all of the time. IIRC in Trails of Cold Steel it is impossible to grind to level 80 because the highest level respawning mobs that can be farmed are in the high 60s. So the strat is to farm those mobs over and over until the scaling exp reaches a trickle, then consume the exp capsules that give you a flat amount of exp. A lot of MMOs use this method as well. In pre-searing Ascalon in Guild Wars 1, there are no respawning mobs high enough level to reach the cap of level 20, so again the strategy is to grind as far as you can until the scaling exp from mobs reaches a trickle, and then complete quests which give a flat amount of exp to level beyond that.

At low levels, going around completing the hunt log is the best way to get levelups. Once you hit level 16 and unlock dungeon finder, then you just AFK in town while queued for dungeons.

Trails games where the amount of exp you get scales depending on how low or high level you are compared to the mob. If you are underlevelled then you will get a lot of levelups, if you are overlevelled then you will get a miniscule amount of exp. You never need to grind in a Trails game, as you can just rush from story fight to story fight and you will always be sufficiently levelled.
