Various video game stuff not deserving its own thread

We must be getting exposed to very different "fanbases." I have no doubt that the ******* you speak of exist, but it's also true that SH2 has been getting absolutely roasted on the Steam forums for years, ever since the very first trailer dropped, with the volume and intensity only increasing with each new revelation. Many threads with hundreds of posts in them, tons of lengthy, insightful takedowns. So there is still a sizeable contingent of real fans of the original game.Bing_xiLim wrote: ↑ October 6th, 2024, 06:30The real victory would be for this ******* remake to flop. From all that I have seen, this remake looks exactly like what I expected. A "competent" third person OTS survival horror game that feels like a downgraded version of Resident Evil but with a Silent Hill storyline, told and presented with none of the charm and appeal of the original. Bolstered by modern AAA production value. You know, for the ****** normies to look at and say "WOW SO PRETTY, SO DETAILED" as throw money at their screens like lobotomised chimpanzees. And I'm sure many people will eat it up right away. I'm not so heartless as to say the game looks like complete garbage, but if it doesn't have the vibe and atmosphere that Team Silent was able to create, what even is the point?? Reviewers keep saying Bloober nailed the atmosphere but I'm not convinced from all that I have seen.
The soundtrack is... ok. It certainly leverages modern production techniques and tech. Dynamic range actually ******* exists, and things don't sound as compressed as before. But some of the songs are such huge misses it's insane. The industrial, grunge rock, trip hop/illbient elements have been dialled down quite a bit. There's a clear shift towards post-rock/jazz and orchestral. In short, it just feels like a modernized version of the original, but again, lacking the soul. The only song I actually thought was an interesting and worthy rendition of the original was the new "Reverse Will".
Mark my words there's going to be idiots in the coming weeks who will claim the remake is better than the original.
On that note, apparently, Ubisoft is allegedly planning to release multiple Assassins' Creed games over the next 5 years, most likely remakes/remasters. And there are already people getting hyped for it. What the **** man.
I'm at a point where I hate all remakes with a burning passion. If the ******* ******* at the top actually gave a **** about the industry, they would try to preserve old games and push remasters instead of remakes. My mind cannot process there are people who say, with no hesitations, "remakes don't replace the original, the original isn't going anywhere".
ARE YOU A ******* *******? That's the entire point of the "remakes" we get nowadays.
Maybe 7-8 years ago, I would have been interested in the concept of remakes, but often these remakes are clearly lacking in originality and/or soul. Yeah sure they have "work" put behind them, being triple A games, but they rarely ever capture the essence of the original games, and those that come close, feel more like high quality remasters (Dead Space).
But I digress, the current Silent Hill fanbase drives me insane and good God do I want to torch everyone of those fuckers. They have been so starved of a good silent hill game for so long they will gobble whatever Konami throws at them.
I am not super-excited about the remake. I do want to play it eventually out of curiosity, when I can get a grey market key dirt cheap. But I am not as pessimistic as you. In the larger context, this is all part of a huge demoralization and humiliation ritual. Not just videogames, but any form of entertainment that men enjoy (and especially white men) must be desecrated. And until recently, the only response to any resistance has been to double down.
The Last of Us is a perfect example of this methodology. It was initially loved by most gamers (I personally thought the gameplay and crafting were way too repetitive), but it sparked limited outrage when DLC retconned Ellie into a ****. Then they doubled down by putting a ***** in the sequel and having "it" murder everyone's favorite character, and openly mocked the fanbase that complained. Then they doubled down further with the TV series, devoting an entire lengthy episode to a subplot of two ******* ******* in an abandoned suburb--a subplot that wasn't even in the actual game.
So in that context, when for years the response to gamers complaining about anything has been developers telling them that they will eat whatever **** the devs shovel out, ask for seconds, and like it...to me it's significant that Bloober was forced to bend the ******* knee in some way. That wouldn't have happened a couple of years ago.

Yeah, I haven't looked around on Steam (I mostly use GOG) but that's good to know. It could just be the more ******** side of the fanbase now speaking up (mainly on platforms like Twitter, YouTube comments, Reddit) as part of the honeymoon phase and in light of the stellar "reviews" the remake has gotten. The sub-reddit in particular is a piece of work. The toxic positivity surrounding the game is on full display. Strawman and ad hominem remarks galore.DDC wrote: ↑ October 6th, 2024, 08:58

But now that you mention it, I did notice a decent amount of people complaining about the remake. I hope these complaints remain present for the next few years. I'm okay with people liking the remake, I just don't want it to be seen as some sort of de facto replacement of the original.
My awareness and knowledge surrounding the state of the industry had been non-existent until quite recently so I'm currently in my doomer phase and vocal about my frustrations. I'm sure I'll simmer down soon enough.Irenaeus wrote: ↑ October 6th, 2024, 12:23
Agree with your points about remakes, but with way less passion about it.
I've always had a soft spot for Silent Hill 2 and as mentioned earlier, my main concern is the remake serving as a replacement for the original. I just don't like how the industry is pushing remakes. To me, these are just another nail in the coffin for older games. If not done with care and respect, I think these remakes serve to push young gamers to forget about the past.
It's like these remakes are pushing that mindset of "newer is better". Hey, look at all this cool new tech we are using in the game! Look at the controller haptic feedback! Look at the pretty graphics and "modernised" presentation! All the while, all the publishers don't seem to give a **** about porting older games to the latest hardware. Why would a normie even bother emulating the old game if they are constantly being sold the idea of the remake being this replacement for the old game by being "new and improved"?
I could be wrong, but this is the message I'm picking up. No sign of any care for older media, no effort to preserve it, no effort to promote/encourage players to play it... it's the classic "don't ask question, just consume the latest product" phenomenon. And it's quite depressing.
To balance my rant, I will say the remake is, after playing it for a few hours (early access files from cs.rin), pretty decent. I mean, the combat feels like a copy/paste of The Last of Us 2, right down to the melee animation. The camera hangs way too close to James and can be quite bothersome in close quarter situations. I also think the game stretches its playtime too much; I have heard it takes 17-19 hrs to beat it, and I think that's too much for not a whole lot.
The game does do a pretty good job with atmosphere, which is supposedly Bloober's strength, and it follows the story beats closely. I also think the voice acting is quite effective at certain points... not so great at others. But there is, as expected, a lack of subtlety to the story.
And while the overall "atmosphere" is quite great, the game just does not have that surreal, dreamy, lynchian vibe that the original had. Partly due to the graphics being more photorealistic as opposed to stylised? Perhaps maybe due to the extra "polish" due to the game being a modern AAA game?
Overall, it's what I expected from a modern AAA game. Decent to high production values (voice acting, audio design, visuals, animations), sticking close to the original game's script, and good atmosphere, well-polished experience that a lot of casual fans/normies will find interesting and like immensely. When I forget about the original game, I find myself enjoying the remake a lot more.
But that's a hard thing to do. And despite being an obvious "upgrade" in so many ways, that certain aesthetic, tone and atmosphere of the original... is just not there. And because of it, no matter what I think of the remake, it (so far) has yet to justify its existence to me.
I never cared much about the Silent Hill games (or horror games in general). I liked Silent Hill 1 better than 2, never even looked into the others. I barely know what Last of Us is other than I heard that in the second some ****** kills the main character of the first game. I was never the audience for these games, so I can't opine on your comments on gameplay. However, I'm of the opinion that these remakes are made in bad faith to replace the history of the first games to fit a more leftist narrative ("own the chuds" in their parlance), which is why I think they should be repudiated.Bing_xiLim wrote: ↑ October 6th, 2024, 13:55My awareness and knowledge surrounding the state of the industry had been non-existent until quite recently so I'm currently in my doomer phase and vocal about my frustrations. Every single confirm requires holding down the button. ******* infuriating. At least there's a setting to turn that off.
Start the game in third person view. Want to switch to first person. Nowhere in the controls does it say how to do it. Had to look it up. Turns out it's in a ******* in-game quick menu, under Utilities. What kind of ******* sense does that make?
That was a very frustrating first experience.

I'm convinced this is a psy-op done by the libs. Why tf would anyone put blatantly false information that can be disproven in seconds? It's exactly like DDC says these assholes want to destroy all forms of entertainment and fill with their psychotic ideologies. Similar thing is happening with Tekken 8 right now, corporate bootlickers are speaking against the review bombing that the game has gotten recently over the forced monetisation that came out of nowhere. They are trying so hard to blame the gamers for everything wrong with the industry.
I feel like I'm going to go insane. The knowledge of just how everything we love is going to be shat on and destroyed and no one can do a thing to stop it has been a blessing and a curse. I just want to end these fuckers goddamn. How the hell have you people managed to stay sane this long?
I hope the reality is different and that the number of people who are opposing these psychos grows everyday. The industry "reset" cannot happen sooner.

Only in the game industry were you see company make promotional material mocking fans for having valid concerns and at the same time gleefully doing the very thing that people are concerned for in the first place.
This industry deserves to burn.
