What game are you playing?
iirc Far Cry 3 was the least politically correct in the series. Everyone in your party group was white. Most of the pirates were brown or black. The only girlboss (who is brown) kills you in the end if you simp and miscegenate. The only homo in the game is a rapist whom you have to kill to rescue one of your friends. And people didn't even notice all of this at the time. None of that would fly now (or at least not yet - I think four years from now things will return to how they were in the early 10s)Oyster Sauce wrote: ↑ October 2nd, 2024, 17:45Finished Far Cry 6. I realized after getting to the second area that this game was barely functional. (where the ****** owns a plantation or some ****, I can't remember specifics but it was gay).
WAY too many ******* mobs 2.5 inches away from city limits. God, what a gross piece of ****. **** Blizzard.

Still reading Witch. The duo of maneater pig familiars are pretty funny. The robin familiar is the MVP. Started off as "Alice's parents here, so I will act in their stead" trying to shoo off Soujyuro, but now he is his wingman.

I like Fukusawa's musical style, but I wish the tracks were longer. Many of them are short and become repetitive.
The mage society does not seem sensible. So the power of magecraft is diminishing due to 1. the technological revolution, which is making once difficult tasks that once seemed like/required magic (ie, mastery over fire) into mundane actions anyone can accomplish (ie, using a lighter), and 2. urbanization and surveying and cataloguing and copying/distribution of books/knowledge rendering most of the world known and less and less of it unknown. (The time period of this VN is the 1980s so this pre widespread proliferation of the internet and smartphones, which would have been a massive blow to the power of magecraft). The bottom is falling out as it requires more and more magical power to be able to conjure the simplest of spells, so the lesser and middle-class mage lines are losing their power altogether and the total mage population is plummeting. There are only 5 mages in recorded history who managed to escape the rat race and ascend to the point to the point where they are not at risk of their powers diminishing, and pretty much everyone has agreed that there is no hope of a sixth mage ascending and has given up trying. It seems like mages are about to go extinct, or become a tiny community.
So it does not make sense to me that Aoko and Alice are cowering in fear of the Watchtower. They are living in this obscure area of the world (in some new gentrifying suburban city of Japan in which they are literally the only two mage residents), worried about some mage institution in London finding out that there is this one muggle in suburban Japan who knows mages are a thing. They have a bounded field surrounding the city, so they would know if a mage came (seems to be a rare event), and even if a mage did come, what are the chances he would visit Alice's house? And even if he did, how is this visitor going to know that Soujyuro knows about mages? Alice could just claim he was a friend visiting. Waver and Rin must've had muggle friends who occasionally came over to visit, right? And even if the mage did determine that Soujyuro knew, what is the mage going to do about it? Antagonize these two mages and lose an ally/business partner/contact/etc when mages are losing their powers left and right? Killing this one muggle is like trying to bail out the ocean with a bucket. The mages are going extinct because of the wide reaching consequences of industrialization, not because this one guy found out. And what, is the London Clocktower going to have police in every city of the world? Given how the mage population is plummeting, surely the Clocktower's manpower pool is diminishing as well, which in turn diminishes their reach and ability to enforce their laws. They would have to pick and choose who they send their increasingly limited manpower for, like stopping mass murderer on their most wanted list, of which there would probably be many emerging given that you would have opportunists trying to rob the lesser and middle-class mage lines who are losing their powers and won't be able to defend themselves. Like the people who were grabbing the silverware on the Titanic as it went down.

Also, if the bottom is falling out on the mage population and everyone has given up on trying to ascend to a sixth True Magic user, then it seems that most mages (everyone except the very top most powerful lines most insulated from the dwindling power of magecraft) should be preparing for their future lives as muggles, using what magic they can still cast to better their standing in the public world or to build wealth. Using their familiars as automation to help get their new factory businesses going. Using magecraft to become top surgeons who can charge a lot and then retire with lots of savings. Etc. The story points out a couple instances of this, but given the abysmal state of things it seems like this should be be a widespread trend.

Getting close to tapping out on Breath of Fire II. It initially seemed like it was going to be fun, but I'm getting close to 1/4 of the way through and the story is still completely directionless and a big step back from BOF1. Also hate how each character has a special combat ability along the lines of FFVI, but they all seem inferior to a standard attack damage-wise, and if they have some sort of added effect I can't tell what it is.
Played a few hours of Trials of Mana since it just got added to gamepass. This is a game I was always really interested in, but I sperged out and made various "NO MULTIPLAYER, NO SALE" posts across the internet when game details started to be announced. Multiplayer was never added, so I'll be damned if I didn't wait those fuckers out and not give them a dime. The game seems good and feels true to the series. My only complaint is the audio. The music is great, but the english voice acting is...unfortunate...and the sound when you whack enemies doesn't hold up to the distinctive thwack from the SNES games.

Solidus Snake Did Nothing Wrong
Finished Ninja Gaiden Sigma. The combat system is fine, but I'm ultimately glad I was a Sony pony back in the 00s instead of an xbot. It was too difficult for my preferences, even using the hero mode they added (though I never dropped down to ninja dog difficulty). There were a number of places where I had no idea what I was supposed to do to progress and had to look up videos to see. The story wasn't terribly interesting, but it did somehow manage to be both simultaneously complex and threadbare. Despite my problems with it, I did enjoy how it took me back to the 00s, when English dub performances sounded monotone, cutscenes were sparse, and graphics were crisp and not covered in a bunch of post-processing effects. And the jiggle physics and costume on Rachel, the *** on Ayane -

The past really was a foreign country. Devil May Cry was better though.

Finished The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Seasons. Played it before back in the early 00s but I don't think I got very far. I did like this one better than Link's Awakening, and I was even able to complete it without looking up anything online, though there were plenty of times when I was left scouring the map trying to figure out their cryptic clues of what to do next. Playing a palate cleanser before using the password to import my Link and his rings into Ages, that's the one that burned me out with its puzzles. We'll see if I actually complete it this time.
Repost from another thread, because it fits here, too.
I'm playing Traveller's Hymn
A FREE game, and good enough to be worth actual money.
It has some somewhat innovative health/food mechanics, similar to Outward, but simpler and different.
There's also some combat strategy in the game.
It's good and I'm having fun.
Get over the movement graphics.

Finished a replay of Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. This one was as good as I remembered, but I don't remember it being this short. Though I played it fair and square the first time, no rewinds. The last level was quite the gauntlet. Guess it's back to the Zelda grind tomorrow.

Tried the demo for the trooner shooter Mohrta. Was going ok for the first 40 minutes or so, but then the boss for level 2 is some sort of furroid creatura. Yep. No more trooner shooters for me this year I think.
It's not a bad game, though being that it is a console port, some of its designs urk me. That said, solid experience aside from that.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ September 19th, 2024, 07:49Days Gone isn't a sony walking sim game afaik, it sold really well when they ported it to PC.KnightoftheWind wrote: ↑ September 19th, 2024, 07:14Started a playthrough of "Days Gone", a Sony Cinematic Slop™ game. Despite how badly these games are meme'd on nowadays, and despite the corporate logo on startup literally being a carbon copy of Marvel's, it seems pretty decent. It's not a sort of game I haven't already played before, being a standard third-person action game with crafting, but for what it is it seems quite fun. It helps that you're playing as a masculine white man and not some strong womyn or gay POC. I'm actually shocked the game exists because of it.
I only just started so I'm holding my breathe for some poz down the line.
Finished Memoirs of a Battle Brothel. I say I overall liked the experience, but it had its problems.
- Right from the start it asks you to make some lore-dependent decisions without giving you much context to make an informed choice. A character asked me if I wanted to support the traditionalists or the progressives in the Courtesan guild, but at the time I had no idea what the policies of either were. It doesn't really matter, but it was a bit annoying.
- Navigating all the menus and submenus gets a bit exhausting thanks to how the controls/menus are set up in RPG Maker.
- During combat, enemies have an annoying hitch before their action starts. I'm guessing this is the engine going through all their scripts to determine what action they should take. This game really pushes RPG Maker to the limit of what it's meant for.
- Some sloppy editing remains:

- The way the game is structured is that there's an intro and then you have your choice of doing up to four faction questlines followed by an epilogue. However, all the faction quests end with an opaque anticlimax. I found out by looking at one of the dev's forum posts that this is because this game is a prequel to a tactical rpg he released years earlier. Tsk.
- I liked the "running a brothel and beating people up" parts of the narrative, did not care for the fate-of-the-universe stuff it hinted at.
- The animated pixel sex scenes were not erotic. I would have preferred CG stills or just text.
I have such an autistic detachment that I make no distinction between games with hardcore scenes and games with softcore scenes. I draw the line at hardcore fmvs though.

As for what more I liked, the art style and setting, a good portion of the character writing, and the combat suited my tastes in its ratio to narrative, pacing, and difficulty (that is, if you want hardcore tactical combat, don't look for it here). I died twice; the first time I decided to just pursue a different quest chain until I was leveled up enough to beat it, and then for one of the final battles, I saved it for last and bought better equipment and acquired some useful abilities. You can complete this for the most part ignoring the special ability and equipment progression, it has that RPG Maker foundation where leveling is the most important thing. There's optional grinding sidequests you can take from the overworld map, but I didn't have to do a single one of them, and that's how I like it.

@Brother Chad you must answer for what you have enabled.
As the store page says, it's entirely possible to play Battle Brothel without seeing a single sex scene. But the content was there, so I checked it out.

There are a bunch, and many of them get advertised to me as 'JRPGs' when I'm just trying to look for normal games. It drives me nuts. Often the dev will remove the porn for the Steam release and then offer a patch on a separate web site to put it all back in, thus evading Steam restrictions and adult/nudity tags.Unhelpful Contrarian wrote: ↑ October 17th, 2024, 12:05I never seen a legit porn game on steam. Fair enough. I guess why it’s so prevalent is because it’s big selling point to set themselves apart from the dime a dozen PRG Maker games. ( which I very much dislike)
