Why would you feel the need to commit to 5 very similar games? Just play one of them, a perfectly self-contained experience, and decide if you like it.
Autism. But seriously, I'm playing these to get a glimpse on how Genetics has been gamified throughout the decades. Thus to fulfill my purpose, I'd have to go through to whole series to properly evaluate that particular implementation.

Evo, someone already posted it somewhere.

The Breath of Fire series is close (especially 3 and 4), but you don't get dragon genes from enemies (usually).
Had forgotten about EVO (even though I had played Search for Eden back in the day). Thanks for the reminder, I'll start by looking up the PC-98 prequel Theory of Evolution.

Any good RPGs that center around building up a keep and going on missions?
Not pathfinder.
Suikoden series. Each game has your army based in a fort that is expanded as the game goes on.
  • S1: the fort is set inside a giant rock pillar/underneath a mountain, with more cavern floors carved out and renovated as you progress and recruit more people.
  • S2: you take over an abandoned run down castle and begin fixing it up, new wooden buildings pop inside the gates, etc.
  • S3: you acquire ownership of a small French chateau and clean it up.
  • S4: was naval themed so you got a ship instead.
  • S5: You have a humongous grandiose flooded castle and the water level recedes unlocking more layers.
  • Eiyuden Chronicle: you have a humongous stone castle and can fix it up and also build more buildings within.
It looks like these are coming to pc soonish.

I need a good well-written, well-paced JRPG I haven't played. Mature-themed along the lines of Xenogears, the darker Final Fantasy games, Shadow Hearts Covenant, or Lost Odyssey. Could also go for something with a more classic aesthetic like Grandia, but I loathe chibi **** like Disgaea.

The problem is, this genre has really gone to **** and JRPGs with interesting characters and stories are barely being made anymore. I could play Eiyuden Chronicles for free on gamepass, but I watched some videos and it looks like hot garbage. Also have Sea of Stars on gamepass, but it supposedly doesn't have much of a story. People like Legend of Heroes, but I played Trails of Cold Steel and it was boring and horribly paced. Granblue Relink looks okayish. Waiting for the PC version of FF Rebirth. And the Star Ocean 2 remake was fun, but I'm done with it.

I think there has to be something good that I've missed over the years. Maybe the Baten Kaitos remasters? Or who knows, maybe the bar has dropped so far that Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery are now worth playing? I just want something with a decent story that isn't too tedious.

Maybe Vagrant Story? It has a combat system kind of like Parasite Eve if you've played that before.

That's actually a good suggestion. I skipped Vagrant Story back in the day because it didn't hit what I then considered the various "benchmarks" for a jrpg like length, party members, variety of environments, etc. But it did get outstanding reviews when it came out and I'm not nearly as rigid in what I like anymore.

Suikoden. The first game is a tight, heavy war story with lots of major character deaths and no ergregious animeisms. You also get dozens of party members to mix from, so you assemble your six man party of your favorites.
I saw someone playing this in a video earlier and had no idea what game it was. Thanks.

I had SaGa Frontier 2 for the PS1 and enjoyed it. From what I can remember, it was quite mature and doesn't have the — now in essentially every JRPG — "what a tweest", it's a game that's just played straight. The game is split between multiple characters, but two primary ones, and takes place over about 100 years iirc. One of the stories is about an adventurer, the other is about an heir to the throne that is exiled.

Oh, and I assume it's unrelated to the first game beyond some minor references that probably went over my head. Don't recall missing anything.

These are all good suggestions. Valkyria Chronicles 4 is actually the game I just finished. Had bought it back when it came out but never got around to it. I love the gameplay of the VC series but the story isn't bad either. Liked Klaus's character arc and the writing is from an era when games could just be fun and have sexual innuendo and objectify women. I was acting like a total coomer running Minerva around through the snow levels in her bikini.

The Suikoden series I've run through entirely and enjoyed but not enough to replay. Tactics Ogre is one I probably need to go through. I have both the PSP and PS1 versions in my collection but I was waiting for the PC version to play it. Then they apparently managed to ruin the gameplay with stupid new "features" so I didn't buy it. Ring of Red--now there's a game lost to the sands of time that I really had forgotten about, but I love Front Mission 3 so it might be worth a look. It's hugely helpful to know that Last Remnant doesn't really have a story since I had always thought it was an intriguing game and have a few attempted playthroughs from years back aborted at <5 hours. Doesn't really seem like it's for me. Aselia has been mixed in with 500+ other games on my wishlist for the last several years but based on that description it's worth a try. And you also reminded me that I need to go back and finish FE fates. I got the special edition with all of the games on one cart but I only played one side of it.

Thanks, for real. I’ll definitely give each one a shot. They all seem interesting enough to be worth checking out.

Ring of Red's part srpg, part real time combat, but you have to time your shots like a popamole. Iirc you can maneuvre units to assist each other in combats, but there was something about it, besides the slow animations and poor translation, that put me off and sent me back to Front Mission.

Looking for a game that would basically be a clone of Little Kitty, Big City. In other words, a game that kids like with stakes they can relate to. (The cat wants fish to get stronger, and to find its way home.)

I would really love to play a blobber that is playable and real-time. I am a veteran of the genre I started with Dungeon Master on the Atari ST when I was basically still a toddler so I got that one sorted out and I would really appreciate something a bit less Arcane in it's design.

I have played the grimrocks (liked both of them), Vaporum (didn't like this one, and thus have not played the sequel) Ultima Underworld I have played and I do not count as the same genre, same with Arx Fatalis (and Daggerfall). (I replayed stonekeep recently as well)

Any recommendation on that specific genre?

Yes, there was a bit of a weird TB SRPG called Zone of the Enders the fist of Mars

EDIT: There is also some weird basically "mech" pokemon RPG on the Platform it's some childrens anime franchise though and the game was really mediocre, i can't remember how it's called atm.

I might have brought up these games a few too many times but I still really, really like them.
  • Suikoden 1: for the heavy feel of the war and the tragedies. I also like Suikoden 2 even though it lacks the heavy feel because of the likeable characters.
  • Final Fantasy IX - I like the story up through the first few hours of disc 3. High tension and interest as you are constantly discovering new places and there is a rapidly developing conflict. Likeable characters.
  • Final Fantasy X - The trio of Tidus/Yuna/Auron is good. I liked Tidus' inner monologues and introspection.
  • Trails of Cold Steel - very likeable characters to get invested in and you want to see things turn out for the best for them as the series goes on. The story peaks with CS2, though the sequels still have their moments but are mostly carried by the characters.
  • Aselia the Spirit of Eternity Sword - I liked the "heavy" feel as the story goes on, also likeable characters.
  • Valkyria Chronicles 4 - has an okayish start but once it starts snowing I started getting very invested in the plot. I quite like the final act.

Honorary mentions where I really like parts of the story but not the whole:
  • Utawareumono Mask of Truth - for gripping start of "how am I going to do this now?". Didn't like the later parts of the story.
  • The Banner Saga 1 - for the final act and the ending scene.
  • Trails in the Sky FC - the first 20 hours are boring, once I reached the end of chapter 2/start of chapter 3 I started getting invested in the intrigue.
  • Trails in the Sky the 3rd - for the ending scene.
  • Pokemon Black & White - for the final act and ending scene.
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky - final act, and the fifth postgame episode.

I would say my top one is Dragon Age Origins, but I believe my playthrough was so dear to me because of the mix of choices and how they aligned with my character to make such a compelling story, and I did not play it enough afterwards to say if it would give me the same feel to it with other characters, so I cannot say with certainty purely because of that.

To the moon
It is about an organization that goes through a dying person's memories to help them achieve their most wanted wish they now have no more time left to achieve. They do this by, as said before, going through a person's memories and changing them to direct the person towards the desired outcome.

Saints Row 2
It is a sequel, but I really liked the story. It is a sort of GTA game, but it had the right amount of seriousness and comedy to really leave an impact on me (and make me sad to how they then went full on parody with the rest of them, to then end up where they are now).

There are others I am sure, but I cannot recall them presently.
Another that, though, the story is a bit less the focus of the game is
Marathon
Saying anything about the story will be a spoiler from what I recall of the game.

- Here to show my support for normal gaming.

Thank you for existing! :bounce:

The Darkness
Image

On his 21st birthday, mafia hit man Jackie Estacado is possessed by an ancient demonic force called The Darkness. This further complicates his relationships with his mafia family, a corrupt police department and his childhood love Jenny.

Used to be a teen when I first played the game on our ps3, which was around 2012 (My brother bought one because we were interested in Heavy Rain, that is Me, my Brother and my Sister) it was so gritty, so down to earth regarding characters and their interactions.

Set in a cyberpunk-themed dystopian world in the year 2052, the game follows JC Denton, an agent of the fictional agency United Nations Anti-Terrorist Coalition (UNATCO), who is given superhuman abilities by nanotechnology, as he sets out to combat hostile forces in a world ravaged by inequality and a deadly plague.

Same with Darkness, I played it around the same time, and it was really great. Atmospheric, sometimes very eerie regarding corpo secrets and that an elite controls almost all facets of life, be it media, medicine or capitalism (I'm not sure how the Devs are feeling right now, knowing so much is actually happening that they depicted in their game)
Granted I was too young and too naive/stupid to understand it and maybe I still am.

No introduction needed. This was and is my favorite 3rd person shooter.
The grittiness, the poetic monologue of max, the characters, the setpieces, everything is perfect in Max Payne 1 and 2.

I used to play a PC game (probably a demo) when I was a kid (late 90s, early 00s). I think it was called 'Russian Roulette', but I don't know if that was the name of the game or the single map included.

I think it was an FPS, although I don't remember if it actually had any weapons or enemies. Mostly, I was roaming around on the large outdoor map. Everything had a very brown color scheme. There was a small settlement of some sort (town, construction site, or military base), and there was a huge construction crane towering over it.

There were vehicles. When I got bored of roaming around, I would always hop in some sort of aircraft and try to jump out at the right time to land on top of the crane.

I didn't even play it that much, but it stuck in my memory and I would like to know the name of the game.

That looks promising, yeah. I'll give it a try later to confirm.
