Clockwork Revolution (aka Arcanum 2) by InXile from former Troika devs

Post by Acrux »

(TTN: 49 seconds).

Chad Moore and Jason Anderson are behind it.

FWIW, Brian Fargo says "Important to know that Clockwork Revolution is a true RPG with all of the stats, crunchy details and deep reactivity that we’re known for."

So its a game about a black woman responsible for ruining a clean and peaceful city and turning it into a dystopian police state? Sounds accurate but I don't want to play a game where I'm a woman or black.

These has beens didn't want to make games, they wanted to make art, they wanted to say something, and so by dividing the two in their heads they made neither.

The only non-woke retrofuturism I've encountered were Fallout 1 and Batman Mask of the Phantasm.

"steampunk" is firmly reddit territory, what were you expecting?

and the idea that arcanum is "steampunk" has to be a complete misunderstanding of the setting by people who never actually played the game. Either that, or people so stupid they think industrialization is "steampunk"

This is steampunk, and it has nothing to do with anything in Arcanum:

...And without any surprise, it's yet another video game trailer featuring a black woman.
Has to be a solid 80% of them now.

Black women must really love video games for them to be so heavily marketed towards. Surely they're a solid 70%+ of the people who play them?

I hate how steampunk now means "everything is gold looking and shiny" instead of being dirty copper. Bioshock Infinite and its consequences.

I wouldn't have minded steampunk if they did it in a grounded fashion, something like League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Instead they went with the shiny reddit tophattery where every character has a gold-plated mechanical limb.

The weapons and power armor you could craft in Arcanum were absolutely steampunk.

As usual, they don't do this for the benefit of racial minorities but for the white people who hate white men. Games by liberals for liberals.

I always thought the powerarmor was a throwaway callback to Fallout, steampunk doesn't describe the setting of Arcanum at all.

Unlike most steampunk settings, these elements aren't omnipresent, but they are there https://arcanum.fandom.com/wiki/Category:Schematics

All I learned from this is that Nikola Tesla existed in the Arcanum universe.

Steamworks isn't inherently steampunk for the same reason star trek isn't cyberpunk.

Arcanum fits into the original definition of Steampunk when K.W. Jeter coined the term before it means sticking goggles and cogs on tophats worn by fat chicks (although, ironically Arcanum has goggles, cogs, and tophats). It also didn't have anything to do with "punk" as in counter-cultural like the term is interpreted today. Jeter intended the term to describe the books that he, James Blaylock, and Tim Powers were writing at the time with Victorian backdrops. It was mostly to distinguish what they were doing from the much more popular cyberpunk genre at the time.

The closest of the three to Arcanum is Tim Powers The Anubis Gates. There's nothing of what we would call modern steampunk in that book, but it does have a Victorian setting and a lot of magic.

Too many similarities to be a coincidence, I guess this is their attempt at a spiritual successor to that game?.

All of the ''punk'' genres are, tbh. Cyberpunk, as the most popular one, has the worst of it.

I always considered Arcanum a game designed by people who wondered "What if knights had guns?" but weren't aware that the 16th century happened.
