@Acrux, on the off chance that I decide to participate, what's the optimal setup for IWD? Which version, what mods (if any)?

Icewind Dale

Evil Stirs in the Frozen North
In the northernmost reaches of the Forgotten Realms lies the region of icy tundra known as Icewind Dale. Journey deep into the Spine of the World, a harsh and unforgiving territory settled only by the hardiest folk. Encounter fearsome beasts that have learned the cunning ferocity needed to survive among the snow-shrouded peaks. Confront an evil that schemes beneath the carven glaciers to wreak destruction upon the face of Faerun. This is the world of Icewind Dale!

@Acrux, on the off chance that I decide to participate, what's the optimal setup for IWD? Which version, what mods (if any)?
IWDEE is essentially running in Beamdog's BG2 engine. So, the main differences are that the EE version adds the kits from BG2, changes weapon proficiencies to match BG2, and adds many of the BG2 arcane and divine spells. (Several of the original IWD spells behaved differently from the BG games, I don't remember if EE changes those or not. I prefer the IWD spells.) It also means your character rolls will be a little higher. There are also some differences in how attacks per round work with higher level characters (it's mostly a powergaming issue, though).

GemRB is also an option for the original game. I haven't used it enough with IWD to know if there are any issues.

MODS
IWD doesn't really need many mods. EE includes Fixpack, Item Upgrade, and most of the components of Unfinished Business out of the box. I use Tweaks Anthology for some QoL things like infinite ammo stacking. I know some of the other tweak mods like atweaks that make things a little more in line with PnP work with it, too.

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND
There are a surprisingly large number of class, race, and stat dependent dialogues. Taking a bard is good for RP, but they are very fiddly and require a lot of micromanagement.
There are a lot of undead in the game. A pure cleric is necessary for Turn Undead since it's level based, but Ranger/Cleric can have all (or most) cleric and druid spells with a config file tweak.
There are not a lot of arcane scrolls. Some of the higher level spells only have one scroll.
Dual-class Fighter->Druid is a really powerful character. (But it requires 15 STR and 18 CHA and WIS. to dual. Or you can multi-class, but will be a little behind in levels.)
Dual/multi-classing in general is really good in IWD. A halfling fighter/thief can get the best helmet in the game.
Ranged attacks are generally considered to be almost overpowered. A high strength ranger or fighter with a composite longbow can easily overrepresent his share of kills. (Or, the Archer ranger kit if using EE.)

See you next month maybe an actual game will get chosen so this guild won't die too!
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

Post the band of heroes that you've assembled after you finish fighting with the dice.
Image
The team I've rolled is a very bard heavy group:
  • Human / Chaotic Evil / Swashbuckler (I plan to dual-class it to a fighter at 7th level.)
  • Half-Elf / Chaotic Neutral / Bard
  • Half-Elf / Chaotic Neutral / Skald
  • Half-Elf / Lawful Neutral / Jester
  • Half-Elf / Lawful Evil / Enchanter
  • Human / Lawful Good / Undead Hunter
With the top three being controlled by myself and the rest being played by a friend via LAN. I'm stuck using the Enhanced Edition for various reasons, if you are as well be aware of the following: And so it begins...

Couldnt bring myself to finish the last island in oOaM, but hoping will be able to get back into this
Edit: enhanced edition crashes when I try and make my own party. Playing with what they give you is no fun. Oh well.

My adventurers have been using the Paladin Undead Hunter to intercept any non-skeleton undead in 'The Vale of Shadows' just in case they are able to inflict disease or level drain. With the Bard and Skald stabbing over the paladin's shoulders using a spear and halberd's extra reach. So far this has been working out well.

Image
It has become apparent that Paladins cannot use Cleric scrolls. I knew priest classes couldn't scribe them like a mage but figured both the Paladin and Cleric could at least activate the scroll directly. Our lack of a Cleric has me a bit worried but so far hasn't been a problem.

:pirate:
The swashbuckler thief isn't much use in combat yet but once he dual classes I'm hoping that will change. Almost everything seems to be trapped so it still feels worth taking those thief levels as I think only that class can disarm traps.

@Element I tried looking for a solution for crashes during character creation.

What I found on the subject was a suggestion to try and "renaming the documents/Icewind Dale - Enhanced Edition folder" as that will recreate a new version of that folder and its contents when you next start IWDEE: A post that suggested switching to the beta branch if you're using steam: And another post that mentioned using the GOG version instead which may be more stable:

The early parts are definitely pretty brutal compared to the starting quests in Baldur's Gate, but I'm having a good time dungeon-crawling so far.

Like many games of this era, it uses EAX sound. To enable it on a modern system, you'll want to download dsoal
https://github.com/ThreeDeeJay/dsoal/re ... est-master

download the dsoal+hrtf, extract the contents of the Win32 directory(dsound.dll, dsoal-aldrv.dll, alsoft.ini) to the game's directory next to the game's executable.
If you're using wine, you'll want to add an override for dsound + winetricks vcrun2022
