If you read the in-game Codex, there are multiple instances of pre-Genophage Krogans settling on a planet, doing a quick any% pollution and resource drain speedrun, then chimping out and demanding another planet to settle on. Curing the Genophage is a ******** short-sighted idea.
"Oh, it all makes sense now, brother."
It's a bit of a sci-fi exploration of "what-if turtles were at the top of the food chain?"rusty_shackleford wrote: β August 16th, 2024, 16:09The genophage being considered very bad is funny if you know anything about turtles. Many turtle species lay hundreds to nearly a thousand eggs a season because the survival rate to adulthood is so low.
I have to assume the writers knew about this and it was based on it?
Indoctrination would have been such a good twist, and much better writing.MalwareEnthusiast wrote: β August 16th, 2024, 15:31I've got fond memories of ME. Played 1 and 2 for six months straight during an unemployment stint back when 2 came out. Wasn't the most productive time of my life, but very enjoyable overall.
Best ME for me is 2 though. Even with the rewritten ending, three just falls flat on its face. Love the atmosphere and all up to the point where you crash the Illusive Mans base, but yhea... the whole crucible ******** was such an arse pull - people can't even work on one ******* project in a coherent fashion, as demonstrated by MEs dropped plots for how to deal with the Reapers and such - and those ***** want you to believe that several species successfully worked out one hyper advanced technological McGuffin while on the brink of annihilation and then passed the knowledge to the next? How ******* removed from reality were those writers?
Indoctrination Theory is canon for me, because it's the only sensible thing in that context and if they had done that, with Shepard awakening at the final hour just to be told there's no crucible and he's been working for the reapers the whole game and then, in the final moment, getting the option to somehow destroy them and save everyone - now that would have been a great ******* ending.
But yhea... still one of my favourite games, despite the flaws.
And the only good Asari is one bent over the table.
ME1 had better combat for me, though. Much more tactical. ME2 was just Gears of Mass Effect. I LIKED how weapons didn't have ammo in the first, I can barely think of any shooters that did that (besides one weapon or two).
I always say, ME1 is an RPG that happens to have shooting as its combat. ME2 is a shooter that has a dash of RPG.

I had never played any of the mass effect games and only had a surface level understanding of the series but i recently played me1 which was very good and i just played me2 which was very bad (in comparisons to 1, i don't know if i would dislike it if i never played 1) at least i got to romance tali though
does 3 continue down the chest high cover corridor rout for every mission? and will my squad mates actually talk instead of blurting out one line per conversation that goes completely ignored by everyone like they just **** their pants and nobody wants to embarrass them by mentioning it?
also what the **** was with all the weird communist dialogue options on the citadel?

What I hate about the Mass Effect sequels is their art direction. Instead of the sorta retro-futuristic look of simple but sleek armor and weapons and architecture they went with the 2010s ****** bells and whistles tacticool militaristic look. You know, adding ******* pouches and little tubing and stupid pointless details like that. This is also the same direction the Batman Arkham games went, with the Asylum Batsuit looking like an updated comic version and with the Knight Batsuit looking like a Michael Bay Transformer. Just look at this:
ME1, ME2 front, ME2 back

ME3

By the time Andromeda rolls around you can't even tell it apart from any other sci-fi shooter.

They somehow managed to make the Citadel look boring as **** in ME3.
Mass Effect was supposed to be called SFX but there was a rights issue with a science fiction magazine of the same name. And it was supposed to be called that because Mass Effect 1 is a love letter, an homage (call it a rip-off if you will) to all of the most popular sci-fi settings. And it forgone this 80s-90s sci-fi look by chasing the gay 2010s trends, both in art direction and gameplay-wise. Mass Effect 1 may be a janky pseudo-RPG, but it was comfy as **** and pretty much timeless.

I thought I was ******* insane for thinking 1 was the best and 3 was the worst. Most "gamers" go with the classic 2 > 3 > 1 ranking.
Speaking of ME3, what do y'all think of the Citadel DLC? Full disclosure, I never played the DLC until a few days ago.
I thought it was ******* *** and made zero sense to be included as part of ME3. It panders so ******* hard to fanboys it hurts. And it's not even fanservice done right. It was if BioWare needed to suck each fan's **** personally after the ending of the game so they decided to make Citadel, which is nothing but fanservice material in a game where you are racing against time to stop Reapers from destroying the whole galaxy.

Not quite true, Edi say this even if you save Wrex and female in case curing genophage, this information is quite disturbing and shows that curing genophage creates more problems:Vergil wrote: β August 16th, 2024, 17:07That's not showing curing the genophage is bad it's showing that killing Wrex and failing to save the female has negative consequences.SoLong wrote: β August 16th, 2024, 15:58That's not actually true Vergil. If Wrex died and the female one also croaks the game goes out of it's way to show you what a horrible idea curing the genophage would be.Vergil wrote: β April 20th, 2024, 23:14Curing the genophage being portrayed as anything but the 100% correct path goes against the writer's shitlib worldview so that's definitely out.
Because it Trayshawn the krogan in charge and the game both shows and tells you that he has exactly two braincells: One dedicated to smashing things and the other for "Muh Dik!".

The first Mass Effect was a pretty mediocre shooter with a cliche story. From what I read of the rest of the series it all goes even worse from there. I liked some of the writing such as some dialogues in the beginning and the ideas for the aliens and tech lore. I never played to the first Reapers scene, but I watched later and thought it was really bad and again, very cliche villains to add to the very cliches of Saren's betrayal and the ******** council of aliens in the citadel.
The little I watched from Mass Effect 2, it was also bad and cliche writing, with the idea of "rebuilding" Shepard so hilariously bad that it still stands out as the worst in the franchise up to that point. Just terrible writing overall, with sprinkles of good writing. There might be more to complain about the third one but I barely followed the drama of the endings and how almost nothing you do in the whole franchise matters, so I'm not the one to talk about it.
My 2 cents on this franchise.

just got to the genophage cure in 3 and they are talking about 1000 babies/eggs a year, wich is ******** so im going to pretend its 10 instead since a species that lives over 2000 years and has regenerative abilities and redundant organs would never need to evolve to birth a thousand babies a year and also if they did birth 1000 babies a year they would have gone extinct far before learning how to make nukes. also the leviathan dlc was stupid. also why is the war correspondent so ******* ugly, did they do that on purpose as a joke?

I clearly didnβt pay close enough attention to the genophage stuff so I believed the ******** about infertile Krogan. They certainly act like Krogan children are rare even by human standards, what with the dialogue in 2 and the cloning subplot. Their birthrates would be sustainable on any planet other than Tuchanka.
i think the writers in 1 had a good idea with them having a barely sustanible birthrate but they just lost the plot and wanted numbers to be big and scary so you have to pick between genocide or 6 gorrilion krogan being born every dayBrother Michael wrote: β August 28th, 2024, 16:07I clearly didnβt pay close enough attention to the genophage stuff so I believed the ******** about infertile Krogan. whoever started the krogans had a much better idea than the 30 people fighting over whether they laid eggs, gave live birth, had stillborn, couldn't conceive, or laid dud eggs in the following games
yes but turtles don't have super regeneration abilities and redundant organs making them basically immune to predation, once the first krogan formed a tribe the birth rates would drop because all the females that only laid 10 eggs a year would have better survivability than the ones who laid 1000 because they wouldn't have to provide for 1000 children and could raise stronger better fed offspring who would outcompete their rivals. in a dominance and strength based culture the krogans have quality wins and the descendants of these lower clutch size women would rise to the top and have more mates, thus leading to a dominance of lower egg production genes. this would happen hundreds of thousands of years before the krogans even discovered agriculture (if they ever did)rusty_shackleford wrote: β August 28th, 2024, 16:01They're based on turtles, some species do lay that many eggs a year.Big Red Dog wrote: β August 28th, 2024, 16:00just got to the genophage cure in 3 and they are talking about 1000 babies/eggs a year, wich is ******** so im going to pretend its 10 instead since a species that lives over 2000 years and has regenerative abilities and redundant organs would never need to evolve to birth a thousand babies a year and also if they did birth 1000 babies a year they would have gone extinct far before learning how to make nukes. also the leviathan dlc was stupid. also why is the war correspondent so ******* ugly, did they do that on purpose as a joke?

Their evolutionary response was to constantly fight and kill each other, not to lower birth rates.
It's science fiction. "Humans did it differently" is not a valid argument.

Curing the genephage was clearly a plot hook to set up the Krogan as antagonists for a future game. They are a great enemy. You don't feel bad for killing them and they have large hit boxes.
