Daggerfall (especially Daggerfall Unity) can be very fun when you get into it and has a lot of things to love, but it also has a very repetitive and simplistic gameplay loop that exposes itself in an ugly way once you've put some hours into it. On this basis the later games, especially Morrowind, exceed it in my mind.Cliff Racer wrote: β August 17th, 2024, 06:45I obv prefer morrwind, daggerfalls graphics is just like old and ugly even if i agree that og morrowind is not so nice
Issue with comparing Daggerfall to later games (and arguably Morrrowind to Skyrim) is that they're basically entirely different genres of game. Morrowind did little to appeal to Daggerfall fans. Oblivion really is kind of the odd man out being a weird middle ground between Morrowind and Skyrim still having a lot of Morrowind's DNA and early versions of what would become Skyrim. Daggerfall fans got no such middle ground and basically have never had another game fill that niche since.Silvanus wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 00:05Daggerfall (especially Daggerfall Unity) can be very fun when you get into it and has a lot of things to love, but it also has a very repetitive and simplistic gameplay loop that exposes itself in an ugly way once you've put some hours into it. It's one example of many of a game having plenty of good, interesting ideas that would almost never be further explored by future developers. Half the dungeons in Skyrim feel procedurally generated anyway, but nobody with the resources to implement that idea again has attempted it.Vergil wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 00:09Issue with comparing Daggerfall to later games (and arguably Morrrowind to Skyrim) is that they're basically entirely different genres of game. The really interesting parts of these games really were only the crime/steal mechanics for hoarding **** and how op I can make my character through exploring/enchanting or alchemy. I hate doing quests in these games, there are no real options given only do that or refuse and come back later. Way more fun just exploring then you find someone like umbra and you then can try to cheese him to death with spells or arrows from range.

Games that try to make stealing boring are **** games even if it makes them too easy.Vaako wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 01:31The really interesting parts of these games really were only the crime/steal mechanics for hoarding **** and how op I can make my character through exploring/enchanting or alchemy. For Morrowind the unique thing that stood out in my mind was all of the different factions and subfactions, ie there are multiple different mages guilds, or joining the Telvanni and then apprenticing to one of the five wizards there, etc.Vaako wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 01:31The really interesting parts of these games really were only the crime/steal mechanics for hoarding ****
For Skyrim I thought it was pretty unique how there were lots of things in people's houses that you could steal, or pick up physically or knock over or trip over while walking through a house.
Yeah the world was interesting too in morrowind, but I just focused on the gameplay mechanics which interested me in that game in that post. If you like different factions and weird lore you could check out vaatividya on youtube for his lore videos on souls games/elden ring, quite interesting even if a lot is speculation.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 04:33For Morrowind the unique thing that stood out in my mind was all of the different factions and subfactions, ie there are multiple different mages guilds, or joining the Telvanni and then apprenticing to one of the five wizards there, etc.Vaako wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 01:31The really interesting parts of these games really were only the crime/steal mechanics for hoarding ****

I cant remember any house in skyrim which had anything worthwhile stealing really. And money was quite useless anyway at least in morrowind you could pay trainers as long as you had money. In Oblivion they nerfed it to 10 skill ups per level and Skyrim 5 I think. Unless you use money to powerlvl crafting and buy ingots/leather etc. But the game becomes really boring then if you can craft the best items and makes exploring not really rewarding or challenging.

I dont even know any games which really focus on that anyway. Where you need to wisely choose where to fence your stuff or that you have to lie in wait to learn daily routines of npcs, lots of different disguises you need to use so that guards/police dont get suspicious and you cant just easiely kill them.Tweed wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 04:09Games that try to make stealing boring are **** games even if it makes them too easy.Vaako wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 01:31The really interesting parts of these games really were only the crime/steal mechanics for hoarding **** and how op I can make my character through exploring/enchanting or alchemy. At least in kingdom come deliverance you had to stash your stolen goods in your chest a few days depending on the value before you could sell it in the city or ride to another city with it but money also had no real use there after a while.

This ******* divided their team to like 30 projects instead of focusing on one and maybe actually getting to finish at least one in this lifetime. Also their main plot for cyrodiil is getting some bums on the throne instead of dragonborn who is by far the best candidate now when septims are dead
Not so much that though KCD at least tries to put a bit of effort into theft and even rakes you over the coals spiritually for it later on. Gothic 3's approach is one of the more interesting takes on it where being a good thief means being a good liar since everyone knows the new guy in town is the most likely suspect if things go missing. Risen 1's pickpocket method where distracting a mark with a conversation and then picking what you want to steal was also creative.Vaako wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 05:04I dont even know any games which really focus on that anyway. Always found it strange how little recognition Talislanta gets with respect to Morrowind. If Morrowind wasn't inspired by it I'd be surprised.
This looks like something you'd easily mistake for Morrowind concept art:

Ken Rolston (Morrowind's lead designer) worked on Runequest and admitted he was inspired by Glorantha specifically, as has Michael Kirkbride. If it weren't for that, I would have have assumed Tekumel should have been an inspiration too. To be fair, a lot of Morrowind is just DUNE: TES EDITION.

Its rusty's lifelong quest to diminish Morrowind by any means, because he hates one of the devs for not writing like a textbook.Vergil wrote: β August 19th, 2024, 17:16I've never seen that name in my life until just now so thay might have something to do with it.
