A Handheld to hold them all
A Handheld to hold them all
Guys, do you know whether any of these chinese handheld consoles coming out recently - Retroid 4 Pro comes to mind - would be an apt vessel for this forum's choice of Windows based RPGs?
You see, I have this dilemma where I'll use Steam, but I don't really want to use steam other than to pay the devs. Ideally I'd like to so to speak Game Boy Color all of them. BG2, Black Mirror, KoTOR, you name it.

I played BG1 and KOTOR on my phone years ago. KOTOR actually played really well! BG has too many tiny buttons.
Anyway, EmuDeck on the Steam Deck is quite nice. https://www.emudeck.com/

I really do miss the 3DS. It had excellent Gamecube-tier visuals, perfect ergonomics, and was actually portable with a clamshell design that protected the screen. I wish it continued on for another 10 years, with more great games made for it.
I never get why people don't grab consoles such as that one, or the PSP, and literally hack them to hell and back, turn them into simulators running whatever the consoles will run. Nah, it's way too bulky. I don't need 40% of that size and weight, nor power to be honest. I need a Retroid 4 Pro running Windows XP.rusty_shackleford wrote: β August 18th, 2024, 08:37because the steamdeck is betterOdrackyir wrote: β August 18th, 2024, 08:35I never get why people don't grab consoles such as that one, or the PSP, and literally hack them to hell and back, turn them into simulators running whatever the consoles will run. Problem with the steam deck is that it can play anything, including games that were not designed to be experienced on a handheld. You're going to be tempted to try playing Skyrim or Kotor, when fundamentally those games were intended to be experienced sitting down in front of a large screen being immersed for at least an hour or two at time. They were not intended for start and stop 5 to 15 minute play sessions while on lunch break or while commuting and while looking down at a small screen. Maybe you could get immersed if you were in a jury duty waiting lobby for 2 hours, but it's still a small screen that does a great disservice to the graphical fidelity and immersive worlds of those games. If you're going to have a handheld, then you really want to be playing games that were designed with handheld in mind. So Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem, VNs like Ace Attorney or Hakuoki or Utawareumono, etc. Games where it is very easy to put down and pick back up like a book, and you're not losing out on the graphical fidelity as opposed to if you had started your Skyrim playthrough at home.
You would look so incredibly gay if you had this in your hands.Odrackyir wrote: β August 18th, 2024, 09:17Nah, it's way too bulky. I don't need 40% of that size and weight, nor power to be honest. I refuse to ever buy a handheld because of the 'ick on 'eck guy, I imagine every single 'eck has been used by him and then returned back to Valve and then they resell it to you. do NOT buy handhelds.

Skyrim and Kotor work great on the steamdeck. I recommend both Thiefs, as well as Morrowind. Going to play Gothic, and finish Ambermoon, when I get home. No point in any other handheld, unless you visit doctors a lot and need something very small.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: β August 18th, 2024, 09:40Problem with the steam deck is that it can play anything, including games that were not designed to be experienced on a handheld. Perfectly ambiguous sexual orientation vibes. Perfect size to make it seem like we don't care that much. Plus the matte black gives off some EDC vibes. It's almost professional. Nerdy isn't masculine outside our rooms folks.

I was playing my steamdeck in a honkytonk, down in the holler. You know? Country music playing, Fox News on the tube, bikers at the pool table. I got the feeling that I was being watched, so I looked up a second, and a few of the local patrons were looking at me, murmering with the Bar Tender. Bar Tender sauntered over, towel on his shoulder, wiped his bearded chin, and asked what I had there. I raised my Steam Deck, and when all the room beheld my machine, a Hell's Angel biker, who resembled the living Lemmy Killmister, said "Son, you don't need to prove anything, to me. You're my hero." The entire bar roared "Get this man a wiskey!" "A drink for the Dragonborn!" "That forearm!" That was the day when I knew we were gonna make it.Odrackyir wrote: β August 18th, 2024, 10:28NaahA Chinese opium den wrote: β August 18th, 2024, 09:42You would look so incredibly gay if you had this in your hands.

Anyone here got a Lenovo Legion Go? I tried to watch some hands-on reviews on Youtube but was quickly reminded of why Death To Youtube is a slogan

Why would you guys need a handheld anyway? You don't go anywhere and if you did a ****** would steal it from you.
3DS is the best handheld for JRPGchads. I got one a couple months ago and regret not getting it ages ago. I have no interest in a handheld the size of a pc handheld or even a Switch. It's actually sad that true handheld gaming is dead due to the Switch and smartphones. Why would I ever want the same experience I can get on my PC except 10x worse?
I don't play video games outside of my house whatsoever though

Something hilarious about people buying a PC handheld to play SNES console games.
Sounds like you need to lift more!
Let's be factual for a sec. 3DS is an Atlus machine and has hardly any different jRPGs available, unless you're into Stella Glow, or 7th Dragon.methoxetamine wrote: β June 15th, 2025, 00:243DS is the best handheld for JRPGchads. The DS Lite was a cool little handheld. Its ability to also run GBA games gave it a pretty good library. However I'd caution against seeking one out for two reasons. The first being they're known to be very vulnerable to static electricity. The headphone jack and a few of the buttons when pressed have a tendency to allow static electricity to discharge into the handheld blowing a fuse. Once that fuse is toast, nothing short of taking it apart and soldering a new fuse in will allow it to recharge its battery again.
The second is that the controls are so small that it doesn't comfortably fit into an adults hands... it's almost like it was made for a child's hand.
Otherwise a pretty fun and compact handheld to have around.
At the end of the day, there is really only one handheld gaming system you need

The PSP to TV cable was very cool feature. I wish all handhelds had it.Valter wrote: β June 15th, 2025, 01:22Well, I really liked my old PSP and how comfy it was to just take it to bed or couch no strings attachedThis design of having the controls to the sides of the monitor looks like the same deal, kinda cool. And was pleasantly surprised to read up on these modern handhelds and how they run a fully functional Windows OS
Guess I can just hook it up to an available TV later if I so wish
