I'm sure eventually TenCent will buy the studio and start churning out mobile spinoffs, don't worry.

Literally all Bethesda had to do is sell a modpack curation service where they take the most popular mods (excluding the porn and other NSFW ****), do the work of combining them all into a modpack, and provide a one-click installer for anyone paying the monthly subscription. Give 60% of the sub to the authors of mods in the pack. Require that any mods in the pack are available for free download elsewhere. Most players don't have the patience to install large modlists themselves, and merged assets for the modpack would belong solely to Bethesda and not be available for free.

Not only does Bethesda suck at making games, they suck at business. Creation Club was a stupid and short-sighted way to monetize mods invented by the sort of idiot MBAs who cannot comprehend that sometimes if you grasp something too tightly it slips through your fingers.

Do you have any idea how much of a living nightmare that would be for them to try and do

60% for the mod authors so they can say "modders get the majority of the money." I think right now Bethesda gets 100% of money from Creation Club, minus a fixed fee for the modders when they give them a new asset.

Edit: And yes, it would be 40% for 10% of the work. I'm not expecting Bethesda to try to be fair, I'm thinking about how they could milk modding for cash without ruining their PR.

Worse than all the player-made modpacks that have started popping up in the last few years? Worst case you just pay a modpack author to run the project, and have whatever decent devs remain help him out.

Some spin-offs, like a more traditional story-centric action RPG, would be neat. The problem is that it can't be made by Bethesda themselves and I don't think Todd wants another team to upstage him and make him look bad. He has the final say on the IP, no doubt.

I almost included Castles in my list of examples but it isn't out so I figured it might be an obscure example.
