Getting a server that doesn't suck and people to play ARMA 3 with all the DLCs at the same time and putting up with clan bs is as close to hell as you can get without making the game suck.

I think you tend to see this issue in media set in 20th century wars or modelled after 20th century wars (UC Gundam), and modernism is pretty cynical about them. A fantasy war that can be better constructed from the ground up without the baggage of Americans going overseas to fight in foreign lands where the justifications become extremely murky and we aren't confident that their interventions were for the better. That way it becomes to get the audience onboard with killing the enemy. Ie the player character is actually a native of a country where the war is taking place and thus has a stake in the fighting, and we are more confident that the royals or the government they are fighting for will be better.
