I accuse

Post by Odrackyir »

I'd like to hear the arguments of younger people - born +2000 a.C. in defence of the indefensible. That'd mean, in defense of the slop in the high tower castle IVORY ******* TOWER - the dumbed down, graphically driven sequels to once respectable sagas: BG3, Skyrim, DA:I, name yours. You may also use this space to further any argument in favor of products that've been disparaged by the veterans in the past.

I'll inaugurate the discussion with the following thesis: After six years of waiting and unfulfilled promises in the shape of axed game mechanics (i.e. in-engine season simulation) Skyrim was the canary in the mine for what was to come in the 2010s and 20s: The turning of AAA into SSS (Securing Sheckels with Slop).

You're asking a forum that's half 68 year old boomers and half serial contrarians to defend modern AAA games?
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

I liked when AAA games had to bow to the demands of the publisher's marketing team, that was cool.

I was born in '99 (so perhaps not quite zoomer enough for you) but I think my reply to your other thread is relevant here as well. This crowd definitely skews towards older RPGs (as do I) so I'm not able to provide much of a defense - I think that those who genuinely like nu-RPGs don't engage very much with the more classic styles (besides as a kind of meme-fueled affectation), and vice versa. I don't see the two overlapping that strongly.

I tried thinking of a game I like that the graybeards generally despise but I can't. It was Skyrim and DA:II that weakened my interest in contemporary RPGs - I was a very autistic teenager.

A lot of those 'older games' people tend to like while deriding 'AAA" games were their era's AAA games. The term 'AAA' was in wide use by the late 90s by insiders(esp. at E3), if you go digging thru any of their early E3 stuff you'll find everything being referred to as 'AAA'. Didn't catch on with the wider gaming audience for a while.

Here's Blizzard referring to Diablo (1, not 2!) and Starcraft as 'AAA' in early 1999:
https://www.ign.com/articles/1999/01/21 ... er-in-1998
"Our goal has always been to create the best games in the world, so we are truly excited over the success of Starcraft," said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard. "Our track record with the Warcraft series, Diablo and Starcraft proves that our mission of releasing only AAA titles is more than just lip service. We remain dedicated to maintaining the highest development and design standards to ensure that gamers experience quality gameplay."

I should've specificed that I meant contemporary AAA, but I was unaware of the history of the term. Thanks for the article!
That project was killed because Blizzard was unhappy with the game's quality.
Lol, unbelievable premise today.

Gen Z do not give a **** about RPGs, AAA slop is a millennial thing. The consumer meme is almost exclusively millennial geeks.

More Gen Z got on PCs when COVID hit but that was a replacement for social setting, get on and play a multiplayer/co op game, equivalent to getting together with friends after school to go to a mall.

That's an interesting take. That'd explain why they're so bad at getting it

Nopes. That's the way I speak in my own language. The problem is, it's been a while since the last time I indulged in good literature. As I'm trying to come up with synonyms to my language's own words, false friends often appear.

Moby **** is a good story about the consequences of revenge ruined by being interspersed with chapters from a 19th century cetological anatomy textbook.

The dumbing down of BG3 mechanics is more to do with DnD's 5E dumbing things down, so I have to blame WoTC there. Even though I think there's room for improvement with older eras, I don't consider 5E an improvement.
Aside from that, it's much less egregious than Skyrim or DA:I for ******* up RPG mechanics-- what Larian ****** up is the content, and if you've read much of the BG3/ No Alphabets threads, you'll see the various examples of that which shows how much of a cluster **** it was, Act 3 in particular.

Bethesda games fulfil a niche that no one else even attempts, and Skyrim was just good enough to get away with such big flaws, whereas Starfield is utter trash consigned to the garbage pile of history.
I'm not even sure if they're dumbing it down for casuals, ******* or journos, but it's abysmal.

Only DA:Origins is decent, DA2 & DA:I would be better off scrapped.
All these devs like Bioware are hiring a diverse, fruity circus of freaks instead of White & East Asian geeks, at the behest of higher powers & incentivisation models through investment-management companies. It's more to do with that than the differences between generations. Tastes also change with age, I played mostly FPS/ action when I was younger, and grew into enjoying RPGs more.
I apologize if my responses were not relevant to your needs. As an AI language model, I do not have personal beliefs or opinions, and I only provide responses based on the information provided to me.
