I wouldn't really consider ESO an elder scrolls game, it shits and pisses all over the lore. I want all of the devs to explode, every time I try to look up a bit of lore I remember from playing oblivion or daggerfall as a kid every wiki source and lore post/video has been overwritten and drowned out by the kungfu panda mists of pandaria level dlc microtransaction slop lore from ESO. It's a tumor you should scoop out of your mind
places like reddit have always been bleh, but ESO has made discussing any lore-related topic completely unviable the majority of the time. Half the sub-humans there just muck any topic up with references to ESO slop (on topics 90% of the time completely unrelated to it), and since reddit has a monopoly on "forum" space, it's often the only medium for discussing these things.Big Red Dog wrote: ↑ August 11th, 2024, 13:40I wouldn't really consider ESO an elder scrolls game, it shits and pisses all over the lore. The forum scholars guild and whirling school was awesome and was as old as the ESF. Fan fictions were a good thing, because the lore was wide open to interpretation, until a certain ex-writer spilled the beans on all the things he'd worked on, because bgs were never going to be interesting with emil writing things. Pronouns didn't take off until around 2009-11, after bgs had published obshitian. This was no coincidence.Vergil wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 02:21Yea I miss when teslore discussions were people posting their straight up fanfiction and nannying each other over making sure to give Vivec gender neutral pronouns![]()

Some of it is interesting but the problem is everything gets stretched as far as humanly possibly to the point you just have people world salading at you about things that have no bearing on any of the games at all. And then there's the full on made up stuff that gets passed around as fact to the point everyone thought the canonical stated goal of the Thalmor was to uncreate reality until someone actually researched the source and it was someone's made up headcanon they posted on the tes wiki.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 02:48the """deep lore""" of TES is ******* ******** beyond words.

Sounds cool. What's the problem? Mantling is actually okay and makes a degree of sense. It's when you get to **** like CHIM that it very clearly just becomes faux deep ******** to some esoteric and metaphysical. It's not hard to grasp because it's a deep concept it's hard to grasp because it's intentionally nonsensically. And you can tell because Cuckbride will literally get butthurt and then comment on lore discussions with some **** he just made up like saying there were 20 different Tiber Septims one of which was an orc.

What was the unique thing about the TES setting again? That it's all the dream of some sleeping eldritch horror or god or something, and the people who realize it's a dream can manipulate it or leave?
It does look human, that's (one of) the problem(s), it's all a lame cut-and-paste job.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 02:53"Noooo, you can't just make **** up for the elf religion you invented so it doesn't look human!"rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 02:48the """deep lore""" of TES is ******* ******** beyond words.

Yeah, because as long as he was at the forum, he stayed "in character" as the ex dev who was grifting, but had the grace to remain an obscurantist and lead your imagination in ten different directions. Was he an egotistical pos? Yeah, he had a kult licking his nutsack.Vergil wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 02:57Mantling is actually okay and makes a degree of sense. Allegedly you can achieve a state called "CHIM" where you realize that you are just a figment of a sleeping godhead's dream but you have such a strong sense of individuality and love of self you persist within the dream instead of disappearing from the revelation you're not real (called zero summing). This basically gives you lucid dreaming powers and is used to explain some things like Tiber Septim retroactively turning Cyrodiil into Europe instead of a jungle.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 02:58What was the unique thing about the TES setting again? The problem with this is that multiple characters who allegedly achieved CHIM managed to get defeated/have to worry about wordly issues or they know about CHIM but somehow haven't achieved it nor zero summed.

The responsible writer's CHIMpout self-insert is a ******, that's all you need to know
VAE VICTIS
In all likelihood CHIM is either fully made up (the main source of it's existence is Vivec who is a notorious lying ***) or doesn't actually grant any REAL meaningful power. Vivec either got killed by the Nerevarine or faded away once the Heart of Lorkhan disappeared despite having CHIM which would imply no longer needing the heart at all and Tiber Septim's exploits could be explained by the plethora of powerful metaphysical **** he was ******* with (Thu'um, the mantella, mantling etc.) instead of magical dream powers he selectively used for some reason.Vergil wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 03:04Allegedly you can achieve a state called "CHIM" where you realize that you are just a figment of a sleeping godhead's dream but you have such a strong sense of individuality and love of self you persist within the dream instead of disappearing from the revelation you're not real (called zero summing). morrowbabies always bring this up despite not realizing it was morrowind that retconned it into a jungle and oblivion was true to daggerfall

That's an elf's take, and powerful men like Tiber Septim fall for elf lies. They hate the world and lament it's making, or they want it all to themselves, so they invent strange talk to hide it's simplicity and confuse dimwits.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 02:58What was the unique thing about the TES setting again? I don't really care eitherway I think Cyrodiil being one biome that's completely incompatible with the culture and civilization that allegedly inhabited it was stupid. I'm just saying the lore justification doesn't require CHIM ********. In the lore Thu'um is a lot more than forcing people into havok physics mode there's no reason to assume Tiber/Talos/Wulfharth couldn't have used it to terraform Cyrodiil.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 03:09Cyrodiil being a jungle was a morrowind retcon btwVergil wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 03:04and is used to explain some things like Tiber Septim retroactively turning Cyrodiil into Europe instead of a jungle.

That'd beRedguard, and Cyrodiil wasn't a retcon, because it wasn't a thing until Redguard.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 03:09Cyrodiil being a jungle was a morrowind retcon btwVergil wrote: ↑ August 14th, 2024, 03:04and is used to explain some things like Tiber Septim retroactively turning Cyrodiil into Europe instead of a jungle.

https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:King_Edward,_Part_VIII
https://en.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:The_Real_ ... h,_Part_IXThe journey through Valenwood was pleasant. The weather held fair for the most part, with sunny days and cool nights. Bright leaves of scarlet, crimson, gold and green drifted down to form a carpet beneath their horses' feet. Valenwood was very different from the somber, steep forests of High Rock. When they reached the northern border[that is, the border with Cyrodiil], Edward, looking back, saw that the trees were mostly bare, shorn of their glory. Before them lay a wide green land of rolling hills with only a few stands of trees. It seemed to spread on forever.
The late winter weather held fair but cold for their journey, so that they travelled quickly over firm roads. On the last day, spring seemed to come at last for there was a thaw, and the road grew sloppy underfoot, and everywhere one could faintly hear the sound of water trickling and dripping. They came to the great bridge that crossed into Imperial City at sunset.
