Styg finally broke down and allowed custom difficulty:

https://stygiansoftware.com/underrail/d ... nsole.html

TL;DR:
Finally understood that game got harder as played until the player became an expert player after 1+ playthroughs.
Realized this limited uptake (game looks offputtingly complex when looking for character build advice) retention (many get filtered at a specific point: Depot A) & recommendations.
Finally recognized mods can help game longevity.

Excerpt from Dev Log indicating above:

Makes the game more playable.
Will finally make it not so tedious to trade your loot, as a start.

Personally, I always wanted the "dominating" enemy array, without the punishing economy nerfs and massive enemy difficulty increase.
This allows that easily. Perhaps I will play all the way through now.

It's just developer approved cheating + a way to not have to actually design your game

Nobody can adjust player difficulty better than the individual player.
Also, your adherence to "cheating" having any meaning in a single-player game is akin to relying on helicentrism because you can't detect the constant/regular acceleration of the rock you're on.

Also, clearly Styg could not appropriately design his game difficulty. It filtered me, and I played the original Gothic and such.

It's like asserting you need movies to allow you to control the camera rather than the director doing it

Ah, yes. The "auteur" argument...

I'm not a fan of difficulty customization, but at least Underrail already has the predefined options.

It's also a better update than the one I expected. Styg teased a new difficulty earlier, and I thought he's gonna add Uber Dominating mode for the masochists or something like that. Him finally allowing a shred of freedom to the players is a good sign. Who knows, maybe he'll finally de-obfuscate the code and allow people to edit the game in the future.

Styg didn't design his game well, so it makes sense here

I wonder what will be the extent of possible modding. Will Styg provide a modding kit in the style of Bethesda's editors or will he allow changes to the engine?
I also wonder how many people are interested in Underrail modding. ATOM RPG is also open for mods but there's only one mod that expands the world and it's abandoned.

Difficulty should be obscured behind clever names like Wolfenstein 3D that insult you if you pick easy or get you hyped if you play hard, and they should each have an accompanying picture that changes with the difficulty.

Custom difficulty sliders are soulless.

Playing on easy should be a humiliation ritual.

There should be at most two difficulties, and the game should only launch with the intended then add a difficulty for people who beat the game and want a challenge later based upon what the devs have learned.
