What is your favorite Elder Scrolls game?
Looks like rusty's going to be handing out a lot of mushroom badges.
Morrowind: way more item slots you can use, you could make the most broken enchantments and spells, still had acrobatics, levitation, jump spells, attributes ( so you also can put more interesting enchantments on items than just +magic +stamina +health), actually op items you could find with reflect spells, magic resist. Various cool legendaries which were useful like dragonbone cuirass, ebony mail and also looked pretty good, boots of blinding speed which made you super fast. You could wear a skirt and robe over your armor for extra stats if you dont mind fashion style too much. The setting was great everyone called you an n'wah/outlander and especially the ordinators were very rude if you dont have reputation or charisma which made killing them for their armor even more fun. Exploration/Traveling mechanics you have to learn no easy teleporting anywhere, which forces you to plan your way to your target, also a very useful skill in real life.
Oblivion: the new combat and spell casting mechanics and the perks you got when hitting 25/50/75/100 on a skill and the dark brotherhood questline were all good. Oblivion gates were tedious and most of the map looked the same. And yeah vampirism somewhat became usable here compared to Morrowind, before it was just too annoying to use if nobody ports you. Terrible enemy lvl scaling without mods. No levitation.
Skyrim: Archery became good here and the dungeons actually look different and are fun to explore for once. They couldnt even be bothered to animate a 2nd weapon sheathed if you dual wield. Most perks are just boring % dam buffs or reduce mana costs, very unimaginative. Even less item slots and very few enchantments because they got rid of attributes. Unmodded mage play just sucks since only pots can give you +dam on spells. No acrobatics.
With enough mods Skyrim could be better than Morrowind for sure especially since there are a lot of handcrafted dungeons. If Skywind ever comes out it might be that what Skyrim should have been. But Bethesda in their lazy arts just loves to cut skills/items slots so that they have less work balancing/world building or animating armors. Meanwhile Kingdom Come Deliverance has shown that you can have a layered armor system without too much clipping.
So Morrowind won.

"I don't care what they tell you in College of Winterhold, Tiber Septim was a Redguard.”
Shame there's no Elder Scrolls thread for this
I'm just stating the facts.
Question is are you going to gargle the truth or swallow?

I picked Morrowind for my top five RPGs, but if we're going by the most enjoyable experience without mods, it'd have to be Oblivion for me.
Edit: Looks like I can't retroactively vote, whoops.

Breton + Boots of Blinding Speed was op out of the box. You probably get the boots before level five, and now your wizard is faster than everything and grounded against magic, because his primitive bloodline is impervious to elven tricks.

If I can't pick Battlespire, I am going for Oblivion over Morrowind because, to me, Morrowind felt less "magicky" in a way compared to Oblivion, so much so I don't play it as an Elder Scrolls. I am not sure how to put it to words, but the occasional sillyness and the saturated colors mixed in with the ambience, the open roads and big castles are what makes an Elder Scrolls game to me. Skyrim was extremely lacking, but lacking in the same irritating way where it goes THIS close, but never really reaches the target.
I tried modding Skyrim to make it playable and enjoyable as I enjoyed vanilla Oblivion, but no mod has ever scratched that itch.

For me personally Skyrim has the advantage of having an entire library of mods that can change your game from minuscule tweaks to downright making it a completely different game. I have played it around 1500 hours, out of which 80% of the time I had some mods installed, which ranged from bug fixes up to changing Alduin into Thomas the tank engine
Morrowind was quite a suprise, since i put in around 200 hours of playtime across 2 different characters (no mods just Bloodmoon and Tribunal expansions), which is more that I can say about Oblivion where I only played for around 90 hours and focused only on the main questline and just doing some random quests here and there.
As for Arena or Daggerfall I have never played them.
ESO is something I swore I wouldn't touch after having quite a past with WoW (which i currently hate) and other MMOs.
My current ranking is:
1. Skyrim 8.5/10 (unmodded) 10/10 (modded)
2. Morrowind 7/10
3. Oblivion 5/10 (its not bad, I just cant force myself to like it)
4. Arena/Daggerfall (never played so I cant rate it)
5.
6.
7.
.......
999. ESO 0/10 (its a filthy timewasting piece of **** like every other MMO out there)

I had chatgpt write some ballads based on the 5 Songs of King Wulfharth. I'll have to edit them, to make them more nordy, but I'm going to give the lyrics to suno.
This one is the Secret Song the Grey Beards shout at boys who make it to the top of the stairs, without getting winded. The boys need to respond in the chorus, or they get blown off the mountain:
Leader:**
In ancient times, beneath the sky,
Shor's Heart was hidden where truths lie,
By Red Mountain's fiery shore,
A tale of gods and war once more.
**Chorus:**
Dagoth-Ur's promise, dark and grand,
Spoke of Shor’s Heart in Dwemeri land,
Across the Inner Sea it lay,
A truth in shadow, dark as day.
**Leader:**
The Chimeri forces slow to come,
With Narsis left, their march undone,
Dagoth-Ur claimed, with treacherous breath,
The Tribunal's scheme, their plan of death.
**Chorus:**
For Lorkhan’s vengeance, as he swore,
The Dwemer would be doomed once more,
Yet Lorkhan (Shor in their land) did state,
That vengeance was not his true fate.
**Leader:**
“Not vengeance for the Dwemer’s pride,
Nor the Tribunal’s wicked stride,
But battle needs more than we hold,
For Nerevar’s might is brave and bold.”
**Chorus:**
In Kogoran’s shadows, forces rose,
With Nix-hounds, wizards, archers chose,
The Ash King and Orcs, with iron will,
Prepared for a battle, fierce and still.
**Leader:**
Wulfharth spoke of truth and might,
Of Shor's true face, of the coming fight,
Some Nords saw through the veil of lies,
And with their king, they chose to rise.
**Chorus:**
Their hearts resolved in the face of doom,
As shadows stretched from Red Mountain’s gloom,
They stayed true to their sacred quest,
To face the foe and stand the test.
**Leader:**
In the last great clash at Red Mountain’s crest,
Nerevar’s champions faced the test,
Keening, a dagger from moon’s shadow,
Dumac’s hammer, a divine blow.
**Chorus:**
Alandro Sul, in Wraith Mail bright,
Faced Lorkhan with his Heart in sight,
The battle raged, with blood and might,
Where gods and mortals met their fight.
**Leader:**
Wulfharth fell, his wounds were deep,
But Sul was blinded, could not keep,
Dagoth-Ur met Dumac’s rage,
And struck the Heart with Sunder’s blade.
**Chorus:**
Nerevar, in rage, struck down the foe,
But Lorkhan’s wound dealt him a blow,
Feigning death, with cunning planned,
Nerevar struck with surprise hand.
**Leader:**
The Heart made solid by Sunder’s song,
Keening cut, the Heart was torn,
Lorkhan fell, the battle won,
The gods’ true tale, at last, was spun.
**Chorus:**
The Heart was lost, the gods were bound,
The truth of Red Mountain was found,
And through the blood of gods and men,
The truth at last came clear again.

I agree that it's important to showcase Daggerfall in this thread, which is largely regarded as the pinnacle of TES.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 2nd, 2024, 17:29Please stop bringing up non-Elder Scrolls games in the Elder Scrolls game thread, thanks. I cannot take anyone who picks something post-Morrowind seriously. Any Elder Scrolls game with no spears and no medium armor is a dumbed down game for *******.
Solidus Snake Did Nothing Wrong
I'm tired of people not understanding why Morrowind was enjoyable. Everyone points to these stupid novelties. Spears don't make a game better. Armor types don't make a game better. It's the same crap that posers praise about Daggerfall. "Look at the language skills!" Yeah, and how many of those matter?
If you think Morrowind has interesting, challenging gameplay than I'm sorry to hear about your lobotomy. Hopefully your nurse is taking care of you well. The only person to actually see why Morrowind is good in this thread so far is Maidenhaver. Morrowind is a terrrible, terrible game. Every other Elder Scrolls entry is better in terms playing it. Stealth is non-functional, playing a thief class in general is an exercise in frustration. Warriors are boring, and there isn't any choice in your tactics. Mages are the best, but again most of the challenge just comes in the daedra later having reflect.
No, what Morrowind is good at is the dressing. The aesthetics. I'm not saying Star Wars but with clay and bugs is especially revolutionary. But the way they implemented it was excellent. Instead of doing a place with a mishmash of ecology and samey cultures, they made sure that architecture, culture, and and interactions were different (for the most part). Further, the dungeons were more sparse and a few were very interesting without being relegated to the main quest. Again, the combat that took place in them was... blegh, but the stories behind them were interesting. This is when Beth understood what kind of writing was easier and more effective in these open world games. The quests from factions (most of them) gave a good idea of how those factions operate and their place in the world. But overall, not really engaging, or interesting quest design. It's a good tourism game, maybe even the best. But it isn't that great of an RPG.

Sounds like a modern indie game. The thing is, Morrowind has such an interesting world it probably would still be enjoyable if the everyone was dead and replaced with... robots? Yeah, that's a great idea!rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ August 3rd, 2024, 04:43Morrowind is a dead world populated by NPCs with wikipedia dumps that stand around doing nothing.

I'm just saying, it's really not that different from FO76 at launch. They just gave the found tapes an NPC visual instead.Rigwort wrote: ↑ August 3rd, 2024, 04:48Sounds like a modern indie game.
