Try to include games not mentioned by others, and exclude more common games you'd find in any top 20.
1. Kenshi. Visually wonky, but arguably one of the better experiences in the last decade. Add several points if you like to make your own fun.
2. Loop Hero. Be a hero and your own DM in a single game, as you're trying to make sense of a very weird world. A lot of fun.
3. A Legionary's Life. Horribly underrated. Manly. Fun.
4. Tyranny. This one is a very, very, very slow burn... in the sense that the usual gameplay loop, for most people would be to choose one of the initial factions, then play the other. Then play with the rebels. And only *then* realize what the game is all about. Speech should be unfettered. Ally yourself with no one. I would recommend this one to teenagers. Adults would probably find it boring.

5. The Witcher (1). If anything for the wisdom drops each big inter-chapter slides give you. If anyone asks you to get some wine from a cellar, get vampire protection, and anti-vampire oils on your sword. Why did they take the rubedo, albedo, nigredo etc alchemy game out from the rest of the series? Who would do such a thing?
6. NOX. Play as a warrior to headbutt everyone, and harpoon pesky wizards. Play a Conjurer trying to cast spells half the game, only to realize that the crossbows are actually OP. Play a wizard for the best ending.
7. Revenant. Mindless fun, until you realize you can learn Invisibility early. Then facepalm because you're ********. Proceed to enjoy the game. Spam shoulder-thrust the last boss in the face, because (lol) who needs spells anyway.
8. Septerra Core. Because you're a ******* masochist for random encounters, and you just want to see that story end. Will ******* Septerra blow up?!? Or maybe don't play this one. Leave this one for the crazy people.

Mediocre or bad games can still have parts that are good.

Fallout 1 or 2. To me they are almost the same game and should be modded together as one.

Super Mario RPG for the SNES is something that should be played if you can stand the sub-genre. It is surprisingly good and probably needs a decent remake. If you do not want to play the game then maybe try the soundtrack since it rocks.
