For discussing tactical and strategy games. What's the difference between tactics and strategy anyways?

Competitive turn based strategies

Can you recommend any TBS games suitable for competitive online gaming? I have never had reflexes required to play RTSes against teenagers practicing 20 hours a day, but would like to try playing TBS against strangers.

Adventurer's Guild

I haven't played it myself but I've heard good things about The Battle for Wesnoth's multiplayer.

The game is open source freeware that works on Windows, Linux or Mac and can be downloaded from its own website, Itch.io or Steam.

Chess
Polytopia

4X/Wargames are not really suitable for competitive MP because they last too long and are usually FFA.
But if you're up for that the best ones are

1. Old World
2. Shadow Empires
3. Endless Legends
4. Dominions

Space Empires 4X on board game Arena.
It is a board game adaptation from an awesome 4X board game that features interesting decisions and imperfect information.
You can play live or asynchronous games.
As it is a board game adaptation, a game is over in a couple of turns (Most games are over by turn 40. I have never seen one go beyond turn 60), and only one turn in 3 comes with economic decisions (the other 2 only have fleet movements and battles). You can play in team games, FFA or 1v1.
FFA is not very interesting (too much complexity while the main skill is convincing players B and C that D is winning and they should bash him while you get in position to win).

Blood Bowl is also a great option if you don't want a 4X, but you need to find a good league. I used to play in Orca Cola before. I had a great time, but it was 12 years ago.

Dominions is also a great MP 4X, but if you go to the end game, be prepared to have very, very long turns! You can avoid that with nations/pretenders that are great at rushing, and suck in the long run :D

EDIT:
You have a few other good board game adaptations on BGA or Steam:

- Dune Imperiums (worker placement + deckbuilding, the games are rather short-ish)
- Lords of Waterdeep (DnD themed worker placement)
- Through the Ages (4X without a map. Plays relatively fast)
- Terraforming Mars (optimization engine)
- Ascension (Deckbuilder)

I heard Solium Infernum is good if you like FFA (I cannot be bothered spending most of my gaming time writing to real people!)?
You can also play Neptune's Pride: unlike Space Empires 4X, it is mostly designed to be played with diplomacy in mind. It is also web based. It has both real time and turn-based options. I recommend Turn based to have a proper nights! It has 8 and 32 player games. 32 is a bit too long (and I met several players who were obviously playing with 2 accounts in the same gamee in the 32 format).

Regular Civ players manage to bring the game under 6 hours (they play team with simultaneous turns), but I have never tried it.

Some Slitherine games also have a community and a tournament scene (Field of Glory 2 for instance). Gladius also plays relatively quickly in MP (with team play and simultaneous turns).
Collectible card games like Marvel Snap or Hearthstone can also be an option, but they require you to grind the daily quests a lot if you want to have a competitive deck.

Edit Edit: If someone is interested in trying Space Empires 4X, I can set up a 2v2 tutorial game against 2 randoms.
