Inoculating children against mobile phone games via Nintendo DS

Post by J1M »

My opinion of mobile phone games can be summed up as "baby's first slot machine". I have decided to offer up the Nintendo DS as an alternative entry point for child gaming.

With the hurdle of acquiring 14 year-old hardware cleared, I am now looking for DS software suggestions for various ages. Suggestions for multiplayer games that I missed at the time also encouraged.

Lists below for future convenience.

Titles I remember enjoying:
Advance Wars (GBA)
Elite Beat Agents
Final Fantasy Tactics A2
Mario Kart DS
Mega Man Battle Network
Might & Magic: Clash of Heroes
Pokemon FireRed
Professor Layton and the Curious Village
Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords
Trauma Center: Under the Knife

Recommended by others that I don't vouch for:
Mario Party DS
New Super Mario Bros DS

New Super Mario Bros DS was quite good. PSP has Me & My Katamari, which is probably fun for kids.

GBA and DS are the only two handhelds my - literally autistic - 15 year old has owned.

Today, he told me that Exiled Kingdoms is his favorite D&D game.

No thanks, I don't want my kids getting brain damage. They will get a crackpipe and a glock 19 instead.

No public school either. When the kids need to learn about the birds and the bees, they will have plenty of memories when daddy put mommy in a chokehold and made her tap out.

I'm sorry to hear that. Maybe they still have your genitals somewhere in the back. They might be sewed onto a 70 year olds head, beaten purple and pusy, but never give up! You never know what could happen if you apply yourself.

I personally vouch for:

DS
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
Etrian Odyssey I-III
The World Ends With You
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow
Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin
Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
Mega Man Zero Collection
Mega Man ZX
Mega Man ZX: Advent
Lunar Knights
Pokemon Platinum
Chrono Trigger DS
Custom Robo Arena

GBA
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Castlevania: Harmony of Dissonance
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Castlevania: Circle of the Moon
Metroid: Zero Mission
Metroid Fusion
Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Shin Megami Tensei

I've had recommended to me:

DS
Radiant Historia
Knights in the Nightmare
Ghost Trick
Phoenix Wright series
Infinite Space

GBA
Golden Sun series
Advance Wars I-II
Zone of the Enders
Boktai series
Mario & Luigi series (on DS too)
Shiren the Wanderer series (on DS too)

There are certainly more good titles on both, but this should be enough to keep someone busy for quite a while.

Honestly just stick to White Shark's list. Maybe add Strange Journey, Rhythm Heaven and possibly the Taiko no Tatsujin DS version. Great fun.

Honestly, the DS is the console I played the most in my life, despite my love for the SNES. It just has by far the most games and, if handled well, never breaks, much like the original brick Gameboy.

Can't believe I forgot Strange Journey. I guess it's because I played it on emulator. Front Mission on the DS is good too, another I forgot for the same reason.

Creating one thread = obsessed! I chose it because it has a good selection of games and the clamshell design makes it easier for children to take care of.

Don't have kids.
In my head that translates as "I'm too much of a pussy to start a family, I cannot take care of it".
So we walked down the hill into all those fears and maybes, all that sorrow, nothing certain in our lives except the frozen earth beneath our feet.
