The Ubislop Zelda Games (BotW & TotK)
The Ubislop Zelda Games (BotW & TotK)
Decided to give Breath of the Wild a try and it's been decently fun. However it does have a lot of quality of life problems that you would think essentially copying the ubisoft formula that's been around for like a decade would have allowed them to avoid though.
Obviously everyone goes on about the weapon degradation which is extremely terrible but I could live with it. The biggest issue for me has been how much it can bog you down in minutiae. Selling things requires you to skip through dialog after every item sold, interacting with towers/shrines plays the same animations (some of which are unskipable!), and traversal could be a bit better especially when you can't just abuse fast travel early on.
Shrines are also pretty meh over all. Really schizophrenic in quality and time. Some of them require you to kill one easy enemy and it's immediately over whilst others will make you go through a moderate about of work for the same reward. The only way to upgrade your health/stamina being tied to completing four of these per upgrade turns them into an absolute slog pretty quickly as you're going to spend a lot of time (again before you can abuse tower fast travel) traversing to a shrine for minimal reward. Personally I would have condensed these shrines way down into a smaller number of bigger dungeons. Then have each of them reward you with either a heart or stamina container right then and there. Going back to the temple of time (which doesn't have a dedicated fast travel point but has one just close enough to be a mildly annoying walk) to upgrade gets tedious and is just a waste of time.

TotK "dungeons"were real stinkers. I don't even consider them dungeons when you can just climb or jump past every single obstacle. There was way too much freedom. Nearly every shrine can be solved by jumping on a rewinding box which is something every player will naturally figure out. It's just noclipping to the end with extra steps.
That being said, I give many points to any game that lets me jump off of high places and fly around.

Once the novelty of the toolset wore off, there wasn't much left to keep my attention. I played BotW for one massive binge session when it came out and then after the reality of shrine and korok seed hunting hit me all my interest evaporated and I never played it again. I had only done one of the dungeons and it didn't inspire me to try any of the others.

They were revolutionary for the same reason anytime Nintendo copies another genre that they haven't yet copied is considered revolutionary by tendies.

Gifted my old botw copy to my nephew its certainly great for kids arround 10 years old especially the shrine stuff. My biggest problem was that the horses are useless since you cant summon them, so you will want to get the dlc bike which you probably get way too late for it to matter. Thats the best about totk that you can at least build a vehicle early on. But if I had to replay it emulator is the way to go with mods so you dont have weapon degredation and you can get the amibo **** for free if you want some of the items there which are sometimes unique. Sadly totk is really only a big dlc for botw. Most of the **** you find there in the depths is just useless armor which looks really similar. Certainly played Ocarina of Time the most and still prefer that type of gameplay, at least upgrades meant something there. Not like ******* korok seeds.

"I don't care what they tell you in College of Winterhold, Tiber Septim was a Redguard.”
First playthrough, I highly enjoyed it. But unlike the classic entries like OOT, ALTP, MM, TP- the game has nearly zero replay value. Once you've seen all there is to see, done about half the shrines, going back would seem like a chore.
I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy.

I still have no clue what the korok seeds even do. I've found like two and have less than zero interest in trying to find more. The game really does hurt the exploration (kind of it's biggest appeal honestly) with how it handles progression. Nothing but shrines will give you upgrades. Weapons break so you will avoid combat until absolutely necessary which means no clearing out enemy encampments. Likewise who cares about opening chests when they're just likely to give you a weapon that will break immediately or an absolute pittance of money (drawn out unskipable animation to open them as well). And the horses are too inconvenient and slow to bother using. The only thing that actually got me looking around instead of bee-lining for towers/shrines/quest objectives is when I got low on money from upgrading the house and wanting to buy the stealth armor at the same time so I went monster hunting.
Shield surfing is pretty fun when you get a good area you can use it in and it makes me wish this game had the hoverboard from Jak II. I think there's definitely some missed opportunities by not expanding on the weirdly under utilized mechanic. You spend so much of this game running around (or flying once you, again, get enough towers to just fast travel spam) that it's kind of a shame you can do very little to make that process more enjoyable outside of hoping you win the horse RNG or spending all of your upgrade resources on stamina containers.

I will also say I'm very, very displeased with the ****** **** in this game. I really don't want to hear any nintendie cope about how it's just "le based Japanese humor". You have to compliment this ***** freak to progress the quest and then pay for the "privilege" of making Link cross dress (with gross close ups on his body) if you want to beat the game. It's revolting to be honest.

People gettin' mad that Nintendo is finally catering to their biggest audience in the Zelda fandom.
That would be somewhat helpful just to help with the mild annoyance of limited inventory slots, but it's definitely not worth the *** Creed 1 flag tier collection tedium.Oyster Sauce wrote: ↑ June 24th, 2024, 00:29Seeds let you buy weapon/shield/bow slots in the lost woods.

It is something I'm kind of curious about. I guess really it's just expected that mentally stunted freaks would latch onto a game franchise they played as children but the Zelda fanbase being so filled with ****** up ****** freaks is a little bizarre considering how traditional the setting and characters are. Link is an aryan chaste knight who is sworn to defend a feudal monarchy from the forces of an ugly semitic ******. Not a lot for libtards to be attracted to!Tweed wrote: ↑ June 24th, 2024, 00:29People gettin' mad that Nintendo is finally catering to their biggest audience in the Zelda fandom.

Anyway, played BotW but not TotK. From footage, ToTK seems to be the better game. Both are great as exploration and open world games but that is it. Everything else is lackluster and tedious at times. Joseph Anderson did a 2 hours analysis and she showcases it. He goes into shrines, dungeons, item durability, and more. Fully agree with him there. As a skill-focused player my biggest gripes were the combat and durability system. If something like dodging followed by a Flurry rush is so inconsistent. Well, oof, big miss. Didn't play it past one playthrough so the issue with armor and defense and how it affects difficulty hasn't come to my attention. What it also lacks to OoT & MM is an immersive UI or menu. Something lots of games lack, in fact.
In general BotW is a 5-6/10. It gets redeemed by the setting, exploration and the Sheikah Slate Runes like the bombs. Cooking and food were nice additions. In the end, definitely no masterpiece like the old Zeldas.
As is so typical of old franchises that suddenly decide to go open world it just didn't really do enough to justify the transition I think. I have no experience or interest in old Zelda games but the situation reminds me a lot of MGSV. The open world setting had some minor little neat things here and there but as a Metal Gear Solid game it had some of the weakest level design and didn't really leverage the open world to do anything interesting enough to make me go "ah yea this franchise NEEDED to do this".
EDIT: Also something I've noticed is how sparse the actual amount of enemies is. Both in the raw numbers placed around the map but also how few variations there are. I've explored every region but one and enemies are essentially the same wherever you go.

I thought botw was so boring. Empty world and boring puzzles. Ugly map too like it was procedurally generated. Couldn’t believe it when they were trying to sell totk for £90, was literally a dlc for the first game.
That’s around where I stopped playing as well it was the worst.Vergil wrote: ↑ June 24th, 2024, 00:28I will also say I'm very, very displeased with the ****** **** in this game. All Nintendo games are realistically kids games. Not to say that most other games are better, but it's like comparing a set of swings on a park to a ball pit.
