Starfield - Todd Howard's latest masterpiece
take back what i said about the graphics. i'm disappointed at the large amount of shimmering and aliasing, even with the fsr2-to-dlss mod. there's something broken with bethesda's TAA solution. fallout 4 had the exact same pixel crawl in the same types of assets, whereas Skyrim was perfectly anti-aliased, with not a single shimmer in sight. it has to do, i think, with beth's pbr materials from fallout 4 onwards.
There's really an excessive amount of pixel crawl along edges, even with reconstruction disabled (fsr2/dlss). more so than in fallout 4 where I originally noticed it.
EDIT: I accidentally had the resolution set to 50% of native XD

Well I feel silly now, the reason I had so much aliasing is because I had the resolution scale set to 50%.
I turned it up to 75% of 1440p now and while performance lowered it did make the image MUCH better, almost no aliasing now.
Game is REALLY heavy on GPU.

Can confirm this makes the game look a lot better.aweigh wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 16:57Well I feel silly now, the reason I had so much aliasing is because I had the resolution scale set to 50%.

This post actually made me check the option.. not sure why my default settings were all jacked to ULTRA but this was set to like 60% ..
All the NPC's still look like inbred mutants but the game looks way less washed out.
EDIT
Water looks genuinely good now too.. before it looked like some REBOOT **** or trial version of Unity.
Too bad you can't ******* swim underwater.. gotta love when Bethesda takes 1 step forward and 8 steps back.

I wonder if devs purposely unoptimise their games to sell more expensive hardware. This is a 20+ year old engine, it really shouldn't run this bad.
Honestly though, the game runs way more fluid than Skyrim or Fallout 4. It's one of my few positives right now.KnightoftheWind wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 17:07I wonder if devs purposely unoptimise their games to sell more expensive hardware. I said this in IRC.. but in Skyrim & Fallout 4 when you swap between third and first person there is always a noticeable hitch / frame drop, that seems to be completely gone now.. also movement feels pretty fluid, gunplay is actually good too..
The game runs smooth for me, loading screens are really short (But there are a fuckton of them) and just in general the moment to moment game feels fluid.
I've noticed a few pop-in textures and LOD objects but overall it's pretty good too. On a whole the graphics are basically Cyberpunk 2077 Tier I'd say. Sometimes it looks good sometimes it looks bad. Depends on time of the day and planet biome.
EDIT
To be clear I am talking about graphics quality.. Art Direction feels like a huge miss.. "NASA PUNK" is getting stale fast and character models range from Ok to... Dear God Why.

Mass Effect 3 literally has more space travel than this game.. You can't fly around planets.. you can hardly move when you fast travel to something...
This game is so claustrophobic.. you can't do ******* **** all in your ship. I hop to a planet and I'm just pinging off invisible walls everywhere, forget landing on a planet I can't go anywhere.. I just have to hope pirates magically teleport in or I can't do anything...
This is baaaaad... Holy ****.

libtards seething over Todd's smashing success, resort to making videos of random crowd NPCs to try to attack a flawless game.

Meh. Cherry picked random errors. Nothing like that is going to be seen in an irl gameplay.Shillitron wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 18:03rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 11:34Facial animations look pretty darn good, which is not something bethesda is known for.

I'm definitely buying this game. Looks good. I had no expectations for it, but I like what I see. Nothing else like it on the market today.

I think I like what they did with persuasion checks, it's no longer an "I win this dialogue" button, but it's also not as inane as oblivion's minigame.

With more VRAM on modern systems.. If you have the texture budget for two diffuse maps.. this is just a simple noise lerp.
This is very easy to implement on a skin shader - and is really only restrained by memory while giving lots of good-boi-bucks in your diversity quota.
The amount of people with this skin condition is probably like 0.00000001 but unlike wheel chairs it takes almost zero development work to implement.
TL;DR - You are gonna start seeing this feature in every game now.. and just shows how creatively bankrupt devs are.

I am visualising Todd Howard sneaking inside the office late at night and putting this one line in the game prior to release. He can't handle the demands from Blackrock and his superiors, it's too much for the guy!.

No, jr. I remember Oblivion, and it's predecessor, which actually had love poured into it. No matter how hard you try and meme, Oblivion was a safe, soulless, cynical cash-grab.KnightoftheWind wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 16:08Wrong game, Oblivion had plenty of soul.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 16:05Its an even more soulless oblivion.KnightoftheWind wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 15:57This game seems to have an even uglier aesthetic than Fallout 4. Weirdest cracker you know.
Well, even after figuring out how to set the appropriate resolution scale and all, the game still has more aliasing and texture crawl than Skyrim did. Pisses me off. The priority for every game should be having perfect TAA set so that there is never any aliasing or shader crawl.
The performance is HORRENDOUS as well; setting the res scale to 100% would help (though it still doesn't fully eliminate it the problem), but that's just impossible unless you're on like a 4090 or something.

Oblivion was chock full of soul, not sure what game you were playing but it definitely wasn't The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. Incredible music, bright and colorful graphics, tasteful celebrity casting, enjoyable sidequests, and hilarious goofs that can only happen in real-time in Bethesda games.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 19:57No, jr. Your only reason for saying that is because people like it for being stranger than forgotten realms.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 20:15Morrowind was garbage.maidenhaver wrote: ↑ September 1st, 2023, 19:57No, jr.
