Recommended DRPGs/Dungeon Crawlers/Blobbers for newfag

Post by Orvas Dren »

Please recommend dungeon crawler games to me, someone who has only played 1 or 2 in my entire life and is new to the subgenre. First person and turn based preferred but open to anything that's good. The more aesthetically palatable the better.

Remake of the classic series. It has good qol features but also has "Legacy" options to play the original way. It's probably the best work InXile has done.

None of the Wizardries?

What about the Amberland series?

Easy to pick up and play, lots of room for crunching and munchkining.

Fun and unique. Everything you do, including combat and leveling up, is based around figuring out words. Recommended to me by @krokodil, good find.

I remember seeing somewhere on the forum caution about the game developer but now I can't find it anymore.
I managed to find this, so I think my memory is intact. Don't think the game itself has those elements.

Basically, don't pay for it.

this is more of what I'm interested in, anything newer?

No. It's also the only game like it.

Legend of Grimrock could be a nice entry point. It's on an easier side, and it's also realtime.

Realtime ones may as well be a separate squaredancing subgenre

I thought about this but didn't recommend it because it's not a strict dungeon crawler. Battles play like dungeon crawlers, but you're never in first person, so it doesn't have the same feel of exploration. It is a fun and easy to get into game though.

If you're a little flexible I'd agree with wunderbar on this, Nammu.

He said for newfags, you trying to scar him for life? Might as well suggest Return of Werdna.

Lands of Lore is one of the best real-time blobbers for a newb because it has all the QoL you'd expect from a studio that designed EoB 1 and 2 along with some of the best aesthetics in classic gaming. The difficulty scales very nicely for the most and it contains just about every kind of environment and standard blobber trope you'll encounter in those kinds of games including one-way doors, spinners, and the dreaded section where you have to solve a pressure plate puzzle without the map. There's no character creation to deal with and not a lot of hassle with inventory management. Itemization is fun and there's a lot of interesting weapons in the game. It also doesn't force you into the combat mambo.

Some people think the war between the two races later in the game is weak, those people are dumb and bad.
If acid eats your armor, reload the game, it can't be replaced.
Yeah, it's real-time, but it's still one of the best and doesn't fall into the grid dance problem.

World of Xeen is the de facto turn-based blobber for newfags. One again an amazing aesthetic (especially the dark side). Two games combined into one. Character creation for those who want it, and you want it. Read the manual before rolling your party. Difficulty scales fairly well and if you wander into some place you're not suppose to be...you die, easy system. Doesn't require any buildfaggotry or insane degree of planning to make an effective party, very easy to get into and play. Even has an easy mode for people who are wimpy, has to be chosen when making a new game.

CD version contains voiced lines for every NPC and an extended ultimate ending if you care about such things. Really, it makes the game slower because of all the talking.
Most of the stat mechanics in Xeen carry over to later M&M games giving you a foot in the door.
Contains all of the standard blobber tropes you'll encounter in any good game, priming you for other DRPGs.

I don't think one needs to start at the beginning to get started. Here are some more recent titles.

Wizardry 8 is objectively better than both and it's new enough to not suffer from old game syndrome

I'd probably say Wizardry 8 is criminally underplayed even by fans of the RPG genre at this point

Sounds like a good AG nomination? Though if the character building systems are like Wizardry VI, I think the two I suggested would be easier to pick up for someone unfamiliar with the genre.

It's not much like Wiz VI at all beyond general similarity of subgenre

Legend of Amberland, as mentioned above, is a fine entry into turn-based, exploration focused blobbers.

Might & Magic III: Isles of Terra also holds up very well.

Maybe you should have mentioned that you didn't want to play anything that wasn't made before 2025.

There's two mods that speed up combat, they work together. @Oyster Sauce uploaded one here

And yes, they're near mandatory. Combat gets veeeery slow.
