If you have any experience playing RPGs, just start on nightmare mode.

The english translation is a bit rough, but it's mostly grammatical errors.

I'll add things I was confused about here to help out any of you who decide to play it:

(These are NOT meant to be tips on how to play the game, but merely explaining things that may be confusing):

• If you're reading this forum, you'll probably want to pick the highest difficulty(Nightmare). I find it to provide a decent challenge.
• Daggers != 'knives'. I don't think we have a word for what it's trying to translate, but knife was especially poor because there are already daggers. The word is 刀(dao): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dao_(Chinese_sword) . In some parts of the game it's also called 'blade', 'saber', etc., There's also sword, which is not the same! They're separate weapon types.
• 'Short' refers to daggers and brushes, I think.
• 'Long' refers to staffs and spears
• In the first town you'll encounter a 'dirty old man'(or somesuch) right upon entering, do NOT refuse his offer. It's not clear at all, but he's actually the tutorial for the game.
• Learning martial arts is important. You learn all these thru manuals. Internal arts are defensive, external are offensive.
• All core attributes have 'base' and 'bonus'. 'base' is only the points you put in at the start and XP you gain towards them while playing. Anything else is 'bonus', including the talents you can pick when starting. For example, if you put 10 in strength you will be unable to level up your strength any further by gaining strength XP.
• You won't be able to understand the couplet matching(exam questions.) It's a Chinese philosophy thing, it simply cannot be localized. Use this guide to look up the answers: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/ ... 3138711446
• if you have a tamed beast you can ride it. Interact with it and select 'depart', it works like the coach except you don't pay(but it uses more food.)

Ask me any questions and I'll try to answer as best I can. My main advice is to not metagame anything and just play, the game has a ton of different ways to play so at worst you'll start over at some point and go a different route.

Also, I don't like the DLC animango portraits and prefer the original ones, you can disable the DLC in the options.

Tbh, one should not translate the word Dao as I recall it is its own variation of a sword.
Perhaps it could be made more clear that the dirty old man is the tutorial man by adding the words (Tutorial) and (skip) to the choices

It would, but from what I gather they're a fairly small dev team, and the English version of the game is the Chinese one, just with English text, using the Chinese UI setup and tags in the text, hence why so much bystander dialogue makes weird use of nouns, and why numbering in previous versions was bizarre.

The lewd old man is a tutorial guy and a Deus Ex Machina Mysterious Stranger that is there with you the whole way for your first go, but then in subsequent reincarnations he doesn't appear.
Me killing the two women made my first attempt incredibly OP, as I doubled up on ranged magic with the Abandoned Temple Fist and the one that the old man gave me, but I didn't understand anything about the levelling.

Yeah, a dao is basically the same as a saber or a wakizashi and other one handed slashing swords.
That being said, anyone trained with an arming sword (a.k.a. a broadsword) or the eastern equivalent would have little trouble using one as the arming sword has basically the same moveset and more.

I was reading around the Steam page but, so far, this game is repelling me because of how it looks, could you tell me your experience with it on a combat-basis and anything relating to the "darker" (somber, serious, etc) parts of it if there are any? It seems too "cheery", so to speak, for my tastes, though I recall a similar game reviewed by Sseth that was something akin to Rimworld and, though I just briefly tried it out for myself, it was a good game to play. I would be fine with it all if it's some sort of comedy-type, but if it's too "cheery" blossoms and "fantasy with the power of friendship" I am not sure I can bring myself to suffer through it
The systems and especially the proverbs are really nice though, I love this sort of stuff!

Thank you! Will give it a try then, I have not come out disappointed with any HQ recommended games, at worst it will be a nice something to visit and re-visit

There's very little sense or wisdom to be had in most of these.

There's a certain sort of "logic" that comes with these puzzles but it only really works with the words and symbols that make up the Chinese language. Here's a guide that does a good job of explaining how they work from a Chinese standpoint. I wonder if these word riddles are the same way non-English speakers see metaphors and slang in the English language.

****** are extremely sensitive about how they are portrayed, even more than *******. The reason they didn't get triggered by these is because this game pretty obscure even in China, at least I've never heard about it before despite being a hapa who can read chinese well.

All good don't worry I also figured it was someone who you fight as you did mention him being a villain. Thank you for sharing yet again!
By the way, I saw Furin has a Recommended review on the Steam page, and from reading I think any "*****" could be a translation error of some sort, there is also a gay character referred to as a werido but I am not sure if that is the same you have found.

here are a couple caveats that I want to address:

• In the English translation, sometimes NPCs are referred to using the incorrect pronoun. This is most likely a translation error, as the English translation is overall pretty rough and simplified Chinese doesn't have gendered third-person pronouns. The incorrect usage of pronouns is likely due to machine translation that wasn't QA'd.

• There are quite a lot of female martial artists. However, this is consistent with typical Wuxia/Jianghu fantasy and does not seem to be a product of DEI.

• There is a minor character in a sidequest who is implied to be gay. However, the game seems to play this off as a joke, as the main character and another minor character are disturbed/repulsed by the behavior.

• It is possible for the main character to marry multiple women. However, this is consistent with ancient Chinese history and does not seem to be a product of pushing a pro-polyamory agenda.

Edit: forgot to say, I also really like the mechanic of having a monicker for characters who are yet to be named, it also opens up a lot of potential for comedy XD
