EverQuest players are raising the alarm over an economy-crushing dupe exploit
The EverQuest community is up in arms over what’s being perceived as a meager response to a major problem that has reportedly crashed much of the economies in the MMORPG’s progression servers.
An update released last week apparently also introduced an exploit that let players duplicate platinum through a tradeskill depot bug, and while Daybreak’s Darkpaw Games put out a hotfix to address the issue, many players are saying it’s not going far enough, as the duping effects have reportedly already ruined in-game economies, especially on TLP servers, where plat value has been completely evaporated and the cost for game time-granting krono consumables skyrocketed, effectively leaving those who tried to sell krono before the dupe twisting in the volatile econ winds. Our own tipster argued that many servers are now “flooded” with duped mats and plat.
Further exacerbating the matter is a lack of direct developer response on the MMORPG’s official channels, which is still the case at the time of this article’s writing (granted, it’s a holiday weekend right now). Meanwhile, players on the game’s TLP server forums are full of solution suggestions, calls to fix the matter more directly, and arguments about whether this dupe really matters.

A technically outdated, chronically underfunded MMO found lacking in quality and support? Color me surprised. One of the reasons I would never touch an MMO without solid funding and interest.

Shroud of the Avatar has like 100 players max and like 2 devs and they did a month-long rollback over an exploit. There's no excuse.

I'd be amazed if they do something to deal with the busted economy, but while we're at it I'd love it if we could use this incident to segue into dealing with the bot farmer armies too since that's another massive economy problem that has gone unchecked all this time.

Private servers are proof that bots in MMOs are something that's allowed & encouraged by MMO developers.
I've played on enough well-run private servers for various MMOs to know that bots can be stopped regardless of population size or staff size.

When I played WoW Classic you could /who any high level dungeon and see dozens of mages with names like Xjsghsk. If I had any sort of mod tools it would been trivial to hop between servers and ban hundreds of not accounts within a few minutes. They pay subs, so Blizzard didn't care.

Additionally, we're in the era of machine learning. Valve uses ML AI to detect & automatically flag players for manual review simply by training a model on normal player replays and detecting behavior that is abnormal. The idea that a company like Blizzard couldn't afford to train a model to detect errant behavior and do the same is laughable.

Back in the day when those bots had shitty scripting and were usually out in the world gathering ore/herbs it was fun to fuck with them. On PVP servers it was enjoyable to Mind Control one bot, have it hit another bot, then watch them auto attack one another to death. You could also make them follow you all the way across the continent and then Alt F4. They'd either try to run back to where they're supposed to farm or totally breakdown and just stand there for hours.
