I want to check out this series. Should I go remasters or originals for the Soul Reaver duology?

The remasters are genuinely great. You can toggle between new and old graphics at any time. Don't forget to save.

Personally, Soulreaver 1 was my entry to the series and I think that is probably the best starting point.

Soulreaver 1 (start here)
Soulreaver 2 (picks up exactly where Soulreaver 1 ends)
Blood Omen 1 (if you want Kain's origin story)
Blood Omen 2 (side story if you desperately want more Nosgoth, but personally I think this should be skipped)
Defiance (the conclusion to several plot threads)

EDIT: You should wait for the Defiance remaster to play it given the news about being able to use a different camera. The original port was poorly done and the original camera design was also poorly chosen (Devil May Cry is popular, let's do that -developer quote).

The remasters let you play the games entirely as they originally were (well, the dreamcast version I'm pretty sure. It came out after the original PS1 release and had some minor model/texture improvements and I'm pretty sure that's the version the remaster is based on) including letting you turn off the small QoL feature that are still included even in original graphics such as the compass and interact icons.

The only extremely fringe difference is you're of course going to get a way higher resolution and view distance than what you would have seen on the original hardware. The lack of heavy fog can change the vibe in some areas.

Also I really don't think Blood Omen 2 is as bad as everyone says. People say it's heavily skippable but it's events are directly addressed in Defiance and there are some great character moments for Kain.
If you're going to play it either play it after SR2 or Defiance.
Getting a controller set up on PC is pretty annoying and you're going to want to because the mouse and keyboard controls blow though.

Gotta say I kinda prefer the edited BO2 model they made for Dark Prophecy over this one. He looks a bit like a modded Skyrim vampire.
Kind of has an ugly scowl and no brows/guyliner.

I prefer his Blood Omen look over the Soul Reaver one. BO2 felt like it was made as an exposition gap fill after the Hylden reveal in SR2 but I still enjoyed it.

I've played Soul Reaver 1. I've watched a playthrough of Blood Omen 1, and what I mean by that is that one of my friends had it on his PC back in the day, and I went to his place and have seen him play through it without missing much.
I've watched a full playthrough of Soul Reaver 2 on YouTube in the 00's, at one point, so I know the story there, roughly.

I have no clue about Blood Omen 2. It was never recommended to me to the point where I was interested in it.

Thanks, just wondered because you singled out Defiance when the voice acting is great in all the games. I would also say Defiance is the least quotable but that's my subjective opinion.

Defiance is very quotable. And the V/A is top notch, imo.

It has its choice moments especially since Kain is more of an on screen presence unlike SR 1 & 2 but they're all pretty quotable.
Blood Omen 1 had lots of great Kain moments due to his constant narration and description of items/spells.

Apparently the mid-evolution Kain and Sarafan Raziel skins from the Ascendance pack were made by a fan who has one of those eternally in development fan games he's been working on which explains why they look a bit... gooby

It was obviously going to be the case but just in case RainaAudron did confirm you can use the new camera with the original graphics on reddit.
As far as remakes go it's never great to look stuff up and see every result saturated with remake graphics but the polish for running on modern systems and ability to use QoL at your discretion is very nice. I guess if we HAVE to live in a remake obsessed world this would be the way to do it. Even if I cringe knowing every result for LoK Defiance is going to have Kain's new massive orc chin and constipation brows all over it forever.
