Why not just run it through GZDoom or the like?SpellSword wrote: ↑ June 10th, 2026, 03:52Why is everything a buggy mess?
I just tried to run a LAN multiplayer game of Heretic with a friend, and after fighting with it for a while, I figured that I should give a heads up about the state of this release. This isn't the way to enjoy either of these games if you're trying to play multiplayer.
We got everything setup using Nightdive's Heretic + Hexen pack. My first thought was: "Ok, time for some Hexen!" But, you can't save in this version's multiplayer... So that ruled out Hexen's long campaign.
Heretic is about 3 hours or less an episode, so we went with that. However after getting the server up, we found that whoever wasn't hosting had all their weapon graphics corrupted. The wand became the cudgel, and the cudgel became a corpse that was displayed in the upper left of the screen.
Tried re-installing it. Even gave downgrading to an earlier version a shot just in case it was something wrong with the latest release. Nothing worked to solve it. (I'll have to look into setting up a source port for next time.)
Ended up running some other games so the day wasn't a waste, but I'll be remembering this when Nightdive's Thief: The Dark Project Remastered comes out.
We have a Steam curator now. You should be following it. https://store.steampowered.com/curator/44994899-RPGHQ/
Various video game stuff not deserving its own thread
I disabled the jump button when I realized that jumping wasn't a thing in the original Doom, so it was basically an on-by-default sequence break button in the source port.
Then I played Hexen on the same install and got stuck in one of the first zones for hours because jumping was apparently a thing in that game, and was necessary to get to the quest item I needed.

Proud creator of the Stardew Valley Cuckoldry Removal Service mod.
That's exactly the plan for next time.

The new episodes Heretic: Faith Renewed and Hexen: Vestiges of Grandeur have some extra hoops that need to be jumped through to get them working with GZDoom.
Beyond new maps there have also been changes to the stats of monsters and damage of weapons. Plus in Hexen the Cleric can now use a shield to block.
I remember that when Hexen came out the fact you could jump was considered a new and interesting feature, same with Star Wars: Dark Forces.Havitner wrote: ↑ June 10th, 2026, 14:31I disabled the jump button when I realized that jumping wasn't a thing in the original Doom, so it was basically an on-by-default sequence break button in the source port.

Sounds like the KEX engine needs some work for multiplayer.SpellSword wrote: ↑ June 10th, 2026, 03:52Why is everything a buggy mess?

It wasn't what it was designed for, but it still should work.
Dunno why they went with that engine.
You may as well not bother replying to my posts if it's to argue anything except concrete facts or your personal opinion. I still probably won't see it.

GOG customers are cattle. They will buy any big budget game that is put on the store by the publisher, no matter how broken and **** it is. "What's this? MindsEye deigned to notice us? Oh yes, instabuy, take my money and spit on me some more!"

I saw this was released today. Apparently it's another voxel game with terrible resource utilization issues. The dev said it was a "priority" in February but still hasn't fixed it.

必须是他,CW(后来成为昱泉的第一位技术总监CTO)!
https://news.17173.com/rzjh/004/“Would you like to come to Yuquan and make games?”
In 1995, through a twist of fate, Cai Junsong returned from the United States to ** and took up a position at Xiji Animation Company. Deeply influenced by his technological education in the United States, Cai at that time felt that American animation lacked a rich humanistic background. He dreamed of creating animation that represented Chinese culture, but he had never imagined that one day he would enter the game industry—and, once he did, never leave it again.
After joining Xiji Animation, what Cai Junsong wanted most was to create works like *Star Wars*. “Before joining Yuquan, I was at a rather prestigious 3D animation company, dreaming that one day I could complete an amazing 3D film,” Cai wrote on his Weibo.
However, in Asia’s 3D industry in the 1990s, all one could do was contract production. Cai Junsong said that not being able to have one’s own creative ideas was not what he wanted to do. Before long, Cai met Cao Yuewen, the founder of Yuquan International.
Cao Yuewen said, “I’ve been looking for you. Would you like to come to Yuquan and make games?” In 1996, Yuquan International, which had started out in the business of multimedia presentations for multinational corporations, saw the enormous commercial potential of the game industry and produced the company’s first game, titled *Taklamakan: The Legend of Dunhuang*.
“Make games? Are you sure? I’ve never made games before,” Cai Junsong asked in puzzlement. In fact, he had not been completely without experience making games. At Xiji, serving as project lead, Cai had completed a fighting game bundled with an integrated graphics card and used to demonstrate a computer’s performance.
Cao Yuewen smiled and said, “By intuition, I think we can do something different together.” And so, in 1998, Cai Junsong joined Yuquan. Over the next ten years, he began his expedition into 3D action games.
Yet the real difficulties had only just begun.
“From then on, we set foot on the road of no return in 3D games.”
At that time, in **, it was almost impossible to find anyone making 3D games. First, Cai Junsong had to cross disciplines and form a team capable of starting from zero and producing a complete 3D game. First of all, he had to find three people.
The first was a technical person: a programmer capable of bringing to life the 3D effects Cai Junsong imagined in his mind. At the time, computers’ integrated graphics cards could not display 3D; 3D imagery had to be rendered entirely through software. Cai thought of a programmer he greatly admired. It had to be him: CW, who later became Yuquan’s first technical director and CTO. After a year of effort, Cai persuaded him to come to Yuquan and begin this obsessive journey together, turning the impossible into the possible. They wanted to create a fully 3D online game on an integrated graphics card, and this also laid the foundation for Yuquan to become a 3D-technology-oriented game company.
The second person was an artist. This artist had to be able to give concrete form to the game worldview and Eastern cultural concepts that Cai Junsong envisioned. That person soon appeared: LW, who later became Yuquan’s art director, came from ** Hong Guang Cartoon, where he was the leading figure. Hong Guang was then known as the “Disney” of **. Cai Junsong’s obsessiveness appeared in a very strange requirement he set for the art: “You need to draw in a style that is unreasonable in terms of 3D perspective, but highly distinctive. Technically, according to the principles of 3D perspective, it cannot be done.” Cai wanted to prove that there was nothing 3D could not do; there were only limits to imagination.
The third thing he needed to find was, strictly speaking, a reliable 3D art team. They had to turn “what 3D considered impossible into the possible.” Cai searched through more than thirty 3D art teams, but not a single 3D production company was willing to take on this difficult task. In the end, he found someone willing to innovate regardless of the cost: AW, who later became Yuquan’s 3D art director. After nearly three months of persistence, virtually without sleeping in a bed, AW finally completed the first scene that satisfied Cai Junsong.
After three years, *Prajna Demon Realm*, a milestone game for Yuquan, officially appeared. Its unusual art style, combined with the fact that it was a 3D puzzle-action online game with Eastern cultural elements—something almost impossible to find in the game market at the time—sent a tremendous shock through the industry.
“I led the initial team in completing the first 3D action-adventure online game, *Prajna Demon Realm*. The game’s story used an Eastern Buddhist cultural background—the *I Ching*—but it had Western-style gameplay: a 3D action-adventure game. From then on, Yuquan began its road of no return in 3D games.” —Cai Junsong
Because *Prajna Demon Realm* did not meet market expectations, some disagreements began to emerge between Cao Yuewen and Cai Junsong. Yuquan believed that they should develop 2D games with a broader audience. Still persistent in his obsessive ideas about games, Cai later developed *Prajna Demon Realm: Chronicle of the Empire’s Demonic Domain*. Although it used 2D visuals, it did not adopt the turn-based system popular at the time. Instead, it leaned more toward action games: a real-time, action-oriented turn-based game that required control over movement and positioning.
Because market feedback continued to fall short of expectations, Cao Yuewen judged that the subject matter should return to Eastern culture.
