you are supposed to reject responsibility towards the world for the sake of saving an individual who you love? If so, then it sounds like the French have caught up with Japan and have accepted the bleak reality of their situation, that the economic and cultural situation will not get better, you will not find prosperity in the future, that society has failed, and that you must instead try to find happiness with your small life as it is right now. So the French are now embracing the Sekai-kei genre. The apparent popularity of this game in the West - along with plenty of other Sekai-Kei works like Evangelion, Attack on Titan, Weathering With You, etc - to me sounds like the Anglosphere has begun accepting it as well. You see an adjacent message in currently popular series like Trails, where sacrificing one person for the greater person is not okay, and it is instead preferable to sabotage your own country and make the collective suffer defeat in war if it means saving the person you love. You can see foreshadowing of this with the Life Is Strange and The Last of Us games from a decade ago. It seems we have come a long way since Wrath of Khan "the needs of the many outweig the needs of the few", or those 1990s disaster movies with astronauts sacrificing themselves to save the world.
