I'll agree that it's library is rather small compared to the PS1, but for me it had the most memorable titles. Ogre Battle 64 for instance, good ****. better than FF tactics, imo. I think the main draw of the 64 were the games Nintendo themselves were cranking out (obviously) and Rareware at the time. Too bad we didn't get Earthbound 64.Val the Moofia Boss wrote: ↑ June 21st, 2024, 09:09The N64 is grossly overrated. There are few games on the N64 that have withstood the test of time. Compare that to any other console which has more games worth playing.

Yes and it still is. Even better than there is a N64 core for Mister FPGA now. This will help preserve its library. Definitely gonna build one at some point in the next years, possibly even this or next. Fingers crossed there willGreyborne wrote: ↑ June 21st, 2024, 09:01Wasn't the N64 a ******* timeless masterpiece? Kudos to Conker's Bad Fur Day. All of these games have superb gameplay, memorable soundtracks and a great story if there is one. They also offer great depth in various forms.
1. Deus Ex
2. Planescape: Torment
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Super Mario 64
5. Banjo-Kazooie - A long-nosed witch with bad teeth and dirty hygiene as villain, trying to look good by sucking the beauty out of another character. What did Rare mean with it ?
5. Conker's Bad Fur Day - Fighting a Black Panther. Hmm, did Rare red-pill youngsters back in the days ?
6. Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos/The Frozen Throne
7. Quake
8. Banjo-Tooie
9. Quake 3 - In part due to CPMA.
10. Super Smash Bros. Melee
11. Starcraft: Brood War
12. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Great mods, some which are used for tournaments like Horn of the Abyss.
13. Ultimate Doom/Doom II - Definitely has the best modding scene.
14. Quake 2*
15. Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
16. SC2 - Not using BNet anymore, so missing out on it, but it is still one of the top RTS.
17. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night*
18. Super Mario World - In part due to the romhacks. Tried some tutorial hacks for Kaizo stuff, didn't finish yet. Also got far in one beginner Kaizo hack.
19. F-Zero GX
20. Silent Hill 2*
21. Silent Hill 3*
22. Silent Hill 1*
23. Silent Hill 4*
23. Clock Tower 3*
24. Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts*
25. Donkey Kong 64
26. Super Metroid
26. Resident Evil (NGC Remake)*
27. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy - Stand-in for the Originals, 2 being the best imo.*
28. Crash N.Sane Trilogy - Also stand-in for the Originals.*
29. Hi-Fi Rush
30. BG I & II*
31. MediEvil
32. Jak & Daxter Trilogy*
33. Valkyrie Profile*
34. System Shock: Enhanced Edition*
35. Pepsi Man*
36. Koudelka*
37. F-Zero X
38. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
39. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
40. Golden Sun/Golden Sun: The Lost Age
Aside the top 26, there is room for changes. Haven't come around to playing much in my collection, so the backlog is kind of gigantic. Enough for the next decades, however.
Any game with a * indicates that I haven't finished it yet or in case of collections/compilations only in part. Example: Spyro 1 & 2 while not 3 yet.
Having been a console gamer for most of my life certain PC titles aren't found in the list yet.
Honorary mentions: Ultima series, Might & Magic series, other main line titles of Zelda, Mario, Paper Mario (N64 & NGC), Resonance of Fate/End of Eternity, Sweet Home, Resident Evil series, other SH titles, Doom 3 + 2016 + Eternal, Mario Party 1-6, ESO series, System Shock II, Thief series and many more. Taking a guess that something like Ultima 7 and System Shock II can very well land in my top 50, even on higher spots.
also be a PS1 core. Still, newer consoles allow the emulation of older systems' libraries when modded.
You have a great grandma getting you Conker, gotta say, even if it was by a lucky accident.
Seeing how Val posted before my reply, PS2 is the best console and has the best library all-around. This is further supported by its PSX/PS1-Backwards-Compatibility.
Despite limited success both N64 and Gamecube have great libraries and some of the best games of all time.
Looked up Mister FPGA and have a hard time understanding exactly what it is? I emulate quite a bit, and have just started following decompiling and recompiling projects. I understand what cores are, since I use retroarch for most of the pre 2000 consoles.Kowe wrote: ↑ June 21st, 2024, 09:16Yes and it still is. Even better than there is a N64 core for Mister FPGA now. It doesn't have the N64 core listed in there despite it existing. MisterFPGA is still better than the likes of Polymega in some regards.
The cores are there to emulate the original systems on the hardware side, with a very, very high precision.

Ah, I get it now. I've always wanted to build my own emulator box for plug and play. Nice to see how far accuracy has come, too. I'm curious to see how well its N64 core compares to Parallel as far as accuracy goes.Kowe wrote: ↑ June 21st, 2024, 09:34This is what I found. I may modify this later, but freestyling off the top of my head in no particular order attempting to represent a variety of genres:
Deus Ex
Panzer Dragoon (Zwei and Orta)
Metal Gear Solid series
Souls Series
Morrowind & Oblivion
Earth Defense Force series
Virtua Fighter 2 (Sega Saturn--very underplayed, but easily the GOAT fighting game when it released and for a long time after)
Guardian Heroes (Sega Saturn--still the GOAT 2d beat-em-up)
Xcom 2 + long war mod
Final Fantasy series (up through 8, 9 and after didn't do it for me)
Xenogears
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Dragon Age: Origins
Divinity OS
Rayman 2 (Dreamcast)
Stellaris
Ace Combat Series
GTA: San Andreas
Kingdom Under Fire: Crusaders
Killer Instinct: Gold
