Yea usually games keep up the same rate of sales forever.
I'm just stating the facts.

That's nearly all the copies it will sell at full* price, which means it probably didn't even recoup development costs. There's an article floating around that misquotes Vavra saying development costs, when he purposely chose the word "production"(which excludes marketing)
A very large % of those copies were technically sold at half price because of chinese pricing.

Delusionally optimistic chaser. It's three months since release and pretty much no one discusses it now, is anyone going to remember it come award time?
it's a single player game, people beat the campaign and moved on.

Can you provide a couple of examples of singleplayer games that managed to stay in the mainstream discussion for many months/year? There's just too many games out there, even though most of them **** people still move on from one to another. Prolonged discussions largely happen due to some political controversy.

Skyrim, Fallout 4, RDR2, Witcher 3, CP2077, harry potter game, no man's sky, any dork souls/elden ring
don't care if some of them have optional multiplayer modes 1% of the playerbase uses

Skyrim definitely did and Fallout 4 almost certainly cost less to develop, fyi. Certainly had far less people work on it in terms of 'core' developers, Bethesda used to run a very lean shop.
Witcher 3 probably cost less too come to think of it.

mandatory mention of larian games too, most people play them solo

RPGs typically do relatively-low numbers out the gate, but have a great long tail of steady sales, KCD1 was one of these. KCD2 ended up being not-an-RPG-after-all with typical "big burst followed by sharp fall" sales.

Dozens of single player games keeps being discussed, not even that, but also played, months even years later. Nobody cares about this game because it sucks and panders to **** and ******* lovers

Anytime people discuss game sales as if a few million is impressive I'm reminded of this — now 12 year old — article
https://www.eurogamer.net/tomb-raider-h ... pectations
3.4 million copies of Tomb Raider have been sold in four weeks, publisher Square Enix has revealed, which is not enough to hit the game's sales target.
Sales fall off a cliff after the first month for nearly every game, there are very few outliers to this.

It's not 2004 anymore, 3 million copies for a AAA game in development for 7 years with 250 developers is somewhere between "missed sales figures" and "we're shuttering the studio because Embracer is hemorrhaging money"

came out a million of years ago, the industry was way too different back then. plus it was a part of a long-running franchise with a mass appeal.
tons of undeserved goodwill from skyrim, wildly successful marketing blitzkrieg, part of a long-running franchise with a mass appeal
gigaboring cinematic slop game that no one actually liked, 99% of discussions are either screenshot wankery 'oh look how great the game looks' or superfluous details wankery 'oh look how horse balls shrink in cold water! kojima is genius'. It was also a flop despite selling many copies, rockstar spent gorillion dollars on it hoping to replicate gta5's success.
no one knows why that game blew up the way it did, it was an unreplicatable fluke.
tons of goodwill from witcher 3, huge marketing campaign, wholesome hollywood chungus doing the voice acting.
part of a long-running franchise with a huge fanbase, also despite that it was forgotten after a couple of months
it only being talked about because of the constant stream of updates and expansions.

don't care if some of them have optional multiplayer modes 1% of the playerbase uses
despite not being 100% multiplayer games, multiplayer still played into the longevity and sales trail by providing all the various gifs and le funny videos generated by multiplayer mechanics (invasions etc). Also dark souls starting from 2 became a franchise with a big built-in audience.

So basically you just listed the biggest games ever made to dunk on a recent release. "This game did not sell 10 000 000 000 000 000 copies in three months, it's over for Vavra! Shouldn't have added ******, amirite?"

Even if it did underperform, it wasn't because of the Henry-Hans fujoshit, Musa, or the defend the synagogue quest.

If you're going to make a game with a big boy budget you need big boy sales, yes.

To be fair, it entirely depends on how much money was spent making the game.

Would a project like Balatro or Stardew Valley selling 3 million copies be considered a success? Obviously yes, since these were games developed by one guy on a shoestring budget, the success of their game turning them into millionaires overnight.

Now, for KCD2, it was developed in Czechia, where the workforce is paid less than, say, Germany and France, but not by that much, and certainly not for a project of this size and scope.

Depending on the marketing budget, which I think was pretty substantial for KCD2, we're looking at anywhere between 3 to 5 million dollars to break even, and at least 7 to 8 millions to be considered a worthwhile investment.

I'm assuming here that the project itself cost 80 million dollars, while marketing was anywhere between 20 to 40 million dollars.

Ok to be fair nothing will ever hit square enix's sale targets. They've said this about every game they've ever made or published.

We have both Vavra and Warhorse PR Manager stating that the development budget was around $41 million. And while we don't have a number for the marketing costs, it was promoted as an AAA game by media thus it should have been a quite substantial amount. Common practice in videogames/movies is to double the production costs to estimate it, which would leave us to around $82 million total budget (development+marketing).

KCD2 just hit 3 million sales (according to Warhorse), at $60 a pop, those 3 million sales would translate to $180,000,000 earned. Subtract the 30% Game Retailer cut (Steam/Microsoft/Sony) and the the revenue drops to $126,000,000. In other words, Warhorse got around $44,000,000 off profit out out an investment of $82,000,000. That is not taking into account regional pricing (up to 50% off in some countries like China/India) which could drastically reduce profits even further. Considering the game is already receiving discounts on some storefronts, I doubt the investors are happy with the results.

Yeah, that is what I've heard, but since I lacked some confirmation, I didn't feel comfortable incorporating it into the estimate. Even if we took those rumors at face value, Warhorse would have $136,875,000 revenue ($90,000,000 worldwide plus $46,875,000 from China), $95,812,500 post-cut and thus $13,812,500 of profit...which is still not a flop (but a very bad investment).

KCD1 was always a niche game, even with 10M sold. There's a reason why it has a 10% completion rate... KCD2 is mostly the same game.

I'd imagine that the vast majority of that 10M was achieved when the game was selling at <$10. KCD2 will still be releasing DLC and people will certainly buy it when a complete edition is released. If it wins some sort of gaming award, that'd also provide a bump. Personally, I think the only way most games find longevity is through a robust modding scene anyway. Skyrim is a prime example of that. Modding is also why anyone under the age of 30 has even heard of Half-Life (via CS which was originally a mod). There numerous others especially going back 10+ years when studios weren't locking down their games as much.

You know,

I was posting a scathing reply to you yesterday, and then deleted it. Why?

Because at the end of the day, you are a useless nobody on the internet not worth my time. The only thing I will say is that, all of this is yours and your cult's fault. Not even gonna bother explaining that.

We. Will. Win. And if anything will come out of it, at least the gaming industry crashing and burning, the game devs being fired by the thousands from the beginning of the year, and the shutdown of gaming propaganda websites (I refuse to address them as "journalists") are already a great source of amusement.
