Even computer RPG's often cheat the rules to achieve a more dramatic outcome, like the classic case of a boss becoming invincible and teleporting away at 1 HP left. He should have been dead according to the rules, but rules are a small thing to sacrifice in order for a remaining dramatic campaign because of what would be rule autists be considered as a rule cheat.

Or they could just, you know, have an element in the rules that lets them do this: a contingent spell, a magic item, whatever. This is a case where you can have your cake and eat it too. Of course, in tabletop, the players should have the possibility of bypassing that as well, if they are able.

If you bend the rules once, it's dramatic. When you keep doing it, it just becomes ******* tiresome and annoying and the bosses that keep doing that become the butt of jokes.
