That is a hot take regarding Persona 4. Golden adds so much new great content, it easily surpasses the original. Visuals aren't everything, bro.Kolgrim wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 12:41People have thrown up some great recommendations already. I'd add the following:

The Persona series is great. My kind of hot take though is that you should emulate Persona 4 on PCSX2 instead of playing Golden as the remake kind of butchered the atmosphere as it was made originally on vita and downgraded the environments. Persona 3 FES should be emulated for sure though as the remake for it is pozzed and far too easy. Also think they messed it's atmosphere up as well.
RESONANCE OF FATE is a unique game. Very unconventional combat and gameplay. I'd recommend checking out some gameplay on YouTube as it's hard to describe.
Trials of Mana was a remake done decent for the most part. Overall the game's a bit easy but it's comfy.
I don't know if you've played Okami as I guess you could call it anime. If you haven't you should. One of the greatest zeldalikes ever.
DRAGON QUEST BUILDERS 1 and 2 are kind of like if minecraft had a story. Fun and charming.
killer7. A surreal FPS game from the gamecube. You could emulate or buy it on steam.
No More Heroes series. Made by the same guys as Killer7 it's a hack and slash that makes fun of otaku culture.
Bullet Witch. Kind of like discount Bayonetta. It's cheap and kind of interesting. Was an xbox 360 launch title back in the day and got ported to PC.
Oh yeah and when you finish up Bayonetta 1 you should emulate the second on Cemu. It runs pretty much flawlessly and is a great game imo.

To be fair it isn't just the visuals. With Golden they made the game easier and I prefer the OG voice for Chie. I see that others already recommended FF6, which I agree is the absolute best installment in the series so far.
While I do think that the OG FF7 is great and all, I always felt it was overhyped. And if anything, seeing how FF7 has been butchered in the moder Square Enix remakes, I'm glad that FF6 didn't became as hyped in comparison.
I also always liked the classic Zelda games though idk if you would call those "weeb" or not.

The best in the genre:
With some of the sexiest character designs you'll ever see in a Jap game:
I recommend playing it with the English VO. The English cast does an incredible job with so much heart going into line delivery. It's strange at the very beginning of the game though because the lip-sync is really bad, but it fixes itself after the prologue mission. Maybe they've fixed that part in the Switch 2 version.
And you don't have to play the first one before playing this one. It's a separate story and universe with only one subtle reference to the first game at the very end.

Duty. Country. Family.
Big Disagree on this from me. FF6 is the of the few that I could never tolerate to the end. It just doesn't do it for me. I've tried to play all the way through multiple times over the years, but I've beaten the majority of 1-10. FF7 was Fantastic and there is a great modding community for the original. You can update the graphics and play with a better translation, among other things. 7 and Tactics will always be my favorites.UltraFan123 wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 15:25I see that others already recommended FF6, which I agree is the absolute best installment in the series so far.

I once tried to play the first Chronicles installment on an old Wii emulator year ago, but the framerate was *** and it was always lagging.Bhaalspawn Jr wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 15:29The best in the genre:

Even so, I have always been interested in playing the Xenoblade Chronicles games one day, and I reckon that there are some decent Switch emulators to pick nowadays.

With the Steam sale going now, I am looking for recommendations for weeb games, ideally ones that are on Steam. (No anime recommendations please I'm already drowning in a backlog for that.)
This is basically an entire new alternate parallel universe of games that I have just never really given the time of day. I'm not picky about genre, it is enough that a game is good, cool, stylish, novel, interesting, etc. Hot women are a nice bonus, since we never get those any more over here.
So far I am playing Nier: Automata and enjoying it a lot.
Other games I already picked up on the sale that looked good:
- Metaphor: ReFantazio
- Persona 5 Royal
- DMC 5
- Vanquish
- Bayonetta
- Stellar Blade

I just beat a modded 60fps version of Xenoblade X on the Switch emulator, Eden. There should be a mod out there for Xenoblade 2 to boost its fps too. (You can increase the resolution to 4k in Eden to make the game prettier too.) Or you could just buy a Switch 2 and play the new port that's out in July which will naturally have 4k, 60fps and new features.UltraFan123 wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 15:37I once tried to play the first Chronicles installment on an old Wii emulator year ago, but the framerate was *** and it was always lagging.Bhaalspawn Jr wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 15:29The best in the genre:

Of course Nintendo would ensure that these games never have a proper PC version.
You bought the wokest Devil May Cry, they made the women uglier and turned a white character black.

1, 3, and 4 are fine given the time period they were created (2 is just a lousy game).

question for the weebs:
I feel like older japanese games(before ~2010) don't have most of the actual developers listed in the credits, is this right? If so, why?

I only know of this happening with Falcom due to the Ys 3 employee mass resignation event that caused Falcom to become a black company and for chairman Kato to institute policies where only he and Kondo could talk to the public and nobody else was allowed to be interviewed or show a portfolio of their work, etc. Kato was afraid that if individual employees could be identified or attributed for their accomplishments, then either fans would latch onto that person and give them leverage within the company, or that employee would be poached by other companies. I have not heard of this happening to the broader Japanese video game industry.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ Yesterday, 19:08question for the weebs:

I dumped this entire thread into da robot and had it organize all the recommendations by platform.
The non-Steam ones are also great because I've been looking for good games to emulate on my phone!
Thanks for the recommendations everyone I've got a lot to chew through now...

GBF recently got a Steam port, but for now it locks you out of also using the web browser version which you can access on both PC and on your phone.
Would also reiterate that FF14 is first and foremost a JRPG, and a MMO second. You don't do much MMOing until you get caught up on the 500+ hour long story. It is a mostly singleplayer experience until then.

I see Moby has corrected the record.
Had the robot sort the Steam options by price lowest-to-highest. I am by the way also a Steam Deck enjoyer so pumped to see a lot of these games are Deck friendly. I realize Deck is great for Emulation too but for games that are touch screen friendly (i.e. turn-based games) I prefer phone emulation since that's always in my pocket.
Going through it right now.
Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen looks cool, cheap. Sold.
FF9/FF13 in the cart, they're basically free, so.
Valkyria Chronicles 1&4 also look really cool, very novel and interesting looking gameplay.
Battle Chasers: Nightwar looks really neat, gorgeous art, also near-free. Carted.
Ni no Kuni Wrath of the White Witch Remastered also looks gorgeous, very cheap, sold.
Yakuza: LAD looks cool, robot claims it's a good entry point to the series, very cheap, carted.
After this prices start passing $10 so gonna examine each title more closely, more thoughts to come.
EDIT: Ah nice wife owns some of these already in our shared steam family library, like FF12 and 15.
EDIT: Okay set up my phone with FF6 (FF3 in NA apparently), Chronotrigger, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana. I'm pretty sure I actually played Secret of Mana as a child. Also set up Duckstation with FF7&8 and Suikoden 1&2.
My cup runneth over!

Robot is right. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise, it's a perfectly fine entry point. I had briefly played 0 but it didn't hook me, i dropped it around chapter 2, then i tried Y:LAD because it was a new protag and it turned out to be one of the best games i've ever played, and made me go give 0 another try and then i just played every single entry.
The Judgment 1 and 2 games are great too, although 1 is better than 2.
