  • Trails of Cold Steel II: the direct continuation of ToCS1. I really like the setting of fantasy Prussia with magitek airships and cool mechas, and nobles wearing trenchcoats and cravats who practice anime swordsmanship. I got really invested into the German Wars of Unification and the cold war storyline. I found the characters to be very likeable. The game had an unusually good English dub. I found the combat and character building to be very engaging on nightmare difficulty. I liked that the game had an unusual ending for a JRPG (the bad guy wins and your best friend died for nothing. You are roped into becoming an agent of a man you hate in the name of reducing casualties in the face of an oncoming world war. All your friends move on without you) and the extended epilogue showing the aftermath of the war. Good aesthetics and fantastic soundtrack. I've replayed this game a couple more times.
  • Shadow of the Colossus: I really liked the mood and atmosphere of galloping alone across this huge, empty civilization. I liked the camera view and the movement of the horse and the views of the environment, really made the world feel grandiose. And ofcourse, fun colossi battles. Replayed this a few times.
  • The Banner Saga 1: good aesthetics and challenging turn based combat without being ludicrous like Tactics Ogre or Fire Emblem 4. I had fun beating the final battle before the nerf patch happened, only had to retry once. I liked the war feel and the two PoVs, and found the game to be novel in that you get a cast of overall older characters. Has a strong ending. I also liked the sequels, but they suffer from feeling like lesser retreads of 1, with 2 doing the same "exodus to a safe capital city with an army at your heels" and 3 with the "forlorn defensive siege of a crumbling city" that 1 did, with the main highlight being the Ravens subplot where you play as a band of ruthless murderers who get roped into saving the world. Gameplay of 2 and 3 isn't as challenging as pre-nerf 1.
  • Mount & Blade Warband: the early game from when you are a small warband assaulting bandit holdouts through to when you are a low level lord and have maybe one or two fiefs and have to fight alongside with other lords is when the game is most fun and challenging. There is a tension to invading enemy territory and beginning a sack of a village and you are stuck as the hours go by and you are hoping that no one comes to stop you, and then you get that massive payout of loot, or the horror at seeing an enemy invasion begin besieging your only castle and you desperately try to scramble as many lords as you can to repel them before it is too late. Unfortunately the lategame period where you have become a king with a big army at your beck and call is when the game becomes really boring, as from then on your total domination is assured and it's just a matter of whether or not you want to invest the time in systematically conquering every single settlement. I think I spent the most hours playing the Gekokujo II mod, as I quite liked the aesthetics and feel.
  • Pokemon Sapphire: I liked the adventure feel of bushwhacking your way through difficult terrain in the middle of a rainstorm, of unlocking hidden paths that loop back to previous areas, or sailing the ocean on your trusty Swampert. The game was sufficiently difficult enough with you having to use your money and items wisely, having to build a well rounded roster capable of defeating different elements and using all of the HMs, and picking which Pokemon to be raising as your main at any given moment. The game had good aesthetics and a good soundtrack. I think I must have sunk the most time into Sapphire of any Pokemon game. I also sunk a lot of time into the remake but did not enjoy it as much as the original.
  • Final Fantasy Tactics Advance 2: I like most of the mainline Final Fantasy game, but FFTA2 is the one I have sunk the most time into. It is the ultimate refinement of the Ogre Battle/Tactics line of games. I had a lot of fun building up my team of characters and making them into the unique customized powerhouses I wanted. Decent soundtrack.
  • World of Warcraft Mists of Pandaria: I liked the aesthetics and setting and lore. Blizzard was able to conjure up new factions and aesthetics and characters without feeling inappropriate for the franchise or like a shoddy rehash of earlier ideas. The questlines were good and defeating Garrosh was the last time I felt like there was a cathartic, satisfying ending to WoW, as if the story could have stopped here. There was a lot of content to do, from the reputation questlines to Timeless Isle to rated PvP to a thriving RP scene. I've liked certain aspects about the following expansions but didn't overall enjoy them as much as MoP.
  • Space Cowboy Online/ACE Online/Air Rivals: the was my first ever MMO. It was a PvP faction war MMO where you played as jet pilots for one of two factions warring with each other over an alien planet. Every month, the playerbases of both factions elected new nation leaders who would then set tax rates, distribute war chest money, organize assaults against the enemy faction's mothership, etc. The weekend mothership wars with hundreds of players fighting each other were very fun. And during the mid-week, you have brigades (guilds) fighting for control over three capturable bases. Sadly the implementation of a literal P2W slot machine you walked up to and put in store currency to get the best armors wound up killing the playerbase.
  • Spore: I really liked being able to create my own creatures and objects and putting them all together into the level editor. I spent a lot of time hanging around on forums downloading other people's creations and checking them out. I am disappointed no other game has tried to recreate what Spore has done. I guess Minecraft lets people create their own environments but the blocks were not granular enough for my liking. RIP Everquest Next. I am surprised there was no Starcraft or Warhammer MMO where you can create your own Zerg/Tyrannid using Spore's creature creator.
  • Suikoden 1: It's a short, 15 hour long game with a heavy war feel. Lots of major characters dying left and right. I liked the bittersweet ending. You can have up to six party members and choose from a massive roster of possible party members, so you can easily build a full team of your most favorite cool characters. S2 is the most popularly cited game in the franchise but that game lost the heavy war feel, with only two character deaths across 40 hours.
  • Aselia the Spirit of Eternity Sword: It is a visual novel/SRPG/grand strategy hybrid. I got really invested into the story and liked the melancholy atmosphere. Aki Hata's soundtrack is very memorable. I wanted to find out what would happen next, and the gameplay was quite challenging. Perhaps a little too challenging in chapter 3. The game was pretty satisfying to finally beat. Replayed the game last year and it still holds up.

I guess I'll quote myself from a while back. The list still looks accurate to me.

I have a number of games (not just RPGs) that are always on my hard drive, and I when I get a new machine I try to get them installed ASAP. I've played many of these games for 20 years or more. I've given up hope for new games to play as well the ones below, and realize what I'd really want is just more content for these. Do you have a list like this?

Arcanum
Baldur's Gate 2 (heavily modded)
Civilization 2: Test of Time
Civilization 4 (mostly Fall Further mods)
Deus Ex
Fallout Tactics
Icewind Dale 2
Kohan: Immortal Soverigns/Ahriman's Gift
Majesty
MissionForce: Cyberstorm
Red Alert 2
Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood
Roller Coaster Tycoon (now OpenRCT2)
Siege of Avalon
Stronghold/Stronghold Crusader
Temple of Elemental Evil

Here's my ****-tier tier list using the most thorough template I could find (still had to add a bunch of my own though); feel free to judge:
► Show Spoiler
If you can't tell what everything is, here are the titles written out:
► Show Spoiler
*My mid-tier consists of games that require heavy modding to properly enjoy them, games with great gameplay but nothing else to recommend them, or games with one or two great things that balance out all the bad.

Can recommend Dishonored and Prey. Replayed the first Dishonored this year and loved it way more than when I was a teen. It's got its issues but I think it's charming (and fun to assassinate everyone you meet). Prey was good too, tho I didn't love it enough to finish it.

Xenoblade 1 is good. You explore this unique fantasy world set on top of the backs of humongous titans. The environments are grandiose and look very good. One zone has you running up a Titan's knee. Another zone takes place in a gorgeous fantasy jungle. Another zone has you running inside the fuller of a giant sword. Etc. The best parts of the story is frontloaded, with the protagonist setting off on a quest for revenge and it's pretty tense and compelling up until Prison Island. After Prison Island the story begins to fall off and turns into your usual JRPG shenagains about fate and killing god with the power of friendship and so on, but the game was overall good enough to finish. Characters are likeable, can't think of anyone who really aggravated me. Combat was okay. There are some good WoW-esque fights that really put the pressure on you such as a DPS check to stop a boss from wiping out a location. Music is good. Only issue seems to be the Switch rerelease, which replaces the painterly FF11/FF12 models with plastic moeblob faces. The rerelease soundtrack is not as good as the original's.

I enjoyed Thief 1 up until I got stuck in the mission where you are wandering around a zombie infested city section.

In no particular order:

Heroes of Might and Magic: 3 and 5 (played a bit of 1 and 2 as a kid but eh, 6 is admittedly **** but i played a lot of it anyway, 7 is filth and deserves to be purged from existence)

Monster Hunter: Only played Tri and World, Tri was definitely superior, possibly one of my favourite games of all time

Mount and Blade Warband: Bannerlord is dogshit, but the Old Realms Mod for it is good (although Warsword Conquest for Warband is obvs better)

Total War: Warhammer: Game 3 is a major flop and a big disappointment, riddled with issues, but it's Warhammer Fantasy god **** it i can't give up on it (yes i'm a newfag and never played older Total War games, i don't even really like the gameplay of them i'm just that hopelessly obsessed with Warhammer that i play it anyway)

Warcraft: The series is dead to me and i disregard anything relating to retail WoW, but Warcraft III and WoW up to the end of Wrath of the Lich King is peak (although Cataclysm has some amazing music)

Runescape: Both Old School and RS3 are pozzed up the wazoo and there are aspects about both i don't like but it's a childhood classic of mine

Age of Empires: Aoe1 was my childhood alongside HoMM1-3, and the resurgence of Aoe2 the past decade got me into it with my friends, Aoe4 is a disappointment and they ****** **** up with the ******** new DLC but some aspects of Aoe4 are cool (especially Holy Roman Empire, like 80% of my interest in the game revolves around them)

Souls games: Admittedly only finished Dark Souls 1 and have been playing a bit of Elden Ring, still need to play Dark Souls 3 but kept putting it off, no interest in the other titles

Elder Scrolls: Morrowind was yet another childhood classic, yet i spent more time mucking around in it than actually progressing, unfortunately i've never given Oblivion a go (i know, heresy, the game came out around a time we didn't have good enough PCs in the house, never got round to playing it since) and i'm admittedly a bit of a Skyrimfag although i despise the modding scene and acknowledge the simplification of the game and how it's basically just normie RPG trash

Honourable mentions to some others like Dragon's Dogma 1, Kenshi, Vermintide, L4D, Deep Rock Galactic, Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, Payday, Darkest Dungeon, Mordhau and its predecessor Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Killing Floor, and Destroy All Humans

don't tell me you actually LIKE that blatant pandering to the Chinese faction that's completely irrelevant to the Warhammer world as a whole, and props itself up in the game to be 'the bestest human civilisation ever'

Morrowind, Dawn of War, Shogun 2, Thief Gold, System Shock 2, Chaos Theory, HoMM 3, Phantasy Star 4, Wizardry Proving Grounds, Circle of the Moon, Oracle of Ages/Seasons, Pokemon Crystal, and probably Ambermoon, once I go back to it. I hate the obscene weapon degredation, but its the kind of game I want to play.

My fav 10 games fluctuates based on my whims and mood but here's what i got for now.

In no particular order:

Dragon age origins: **** the haters, it still holds up.
Battle brothers: Got inspired to replay it due to an ongoing lp, seems to be holding up great as a game i can keep revisiting and have as much fun as when i played it the first time around. Normally i get bored of games before i can finish them but can always make it to at least the first crisis with bb.
Xcom with mods like xpiratez: maybe one day i will finish an xpiratez run, but for now it remains my gaming moby ****
DBZ budokai 3: best fighting game EVAR as far as i'm concerned, partly influenced by how much good times i've had with this title, played it during boarding school and played it at uni, and has a god tier ost even if, or perhaps because most of the songs were plagiarised.
Baldurs gate 2 with mods: Those who know me know i like my companion mods and bg2 remains the king of that. Mods like randomised items also helps keep each run fresh and is something i wish more games did so i don't just beeline for the best weapons or have some optimised route to follow.
Troubleshooter abandoned children: Satisfies my tactical rpg itch quite well.
Total warhammer 3 (with mods): I wanted to put one of the older total wars for street cred but the truth is despite tw3 being a downgrade in many ways, my warhammer fanboyism wins over my common sense.
Mount and blade 1: I hope in time to replace the 1 with a 2 but somehow i keep going back to the 1st game and its much more developped mod scene.
Airships conquer the skies: I liked playing lego as a kid and this game is basically that: build ships out of things and then watch them fight.
Breath of fire 3: still my overall favorite jrpg although admittedly i really liked dragon quest IX so either one of those 2.
The first Budokai still holds a place in me heart.
I'm a meat and potatoes kind of guy.

guess I'll do 10 because I can

Albion(1996)
Fallout 2(1998)
Wizardry 8(2001)
Divine Divinity(2002)
(PC RPGs had a very rough decade here due to publishers forsaking PC)
Twitcher (2007)
(Brief period of good RPGs)
Divinity II: Developer's Cut(2012)
Divinity: Original Sin(2014)
(Another rough decade for PC rpgs due to homosexuals)
Technomancer(2016)
ATOM RPG+ATOM Trudograd(2018+2021)
Chronicles of Myrtana: Archolos(2021)

I still have a lot of ~pre-2005 RPGs I want to play. Also, I almost exclusively play RPGs.
So what's up with ATOM RPG? Does it hold a candle to the OG Fallouts?

Watched my wife play through Xenoblade 1, and I agree that it's good. Dub was actually tolerable.

Yes. The only other things that come close are some of the FO2 total conversions. I actually enjoyed ATOM more than either Fallouts.

[edit]
To clarify, ATOM just has a lot of niceties in terms of UX that FO1 doesn't. FO2 is very uneven in its content due to its development. FO1 is much shorter than ATOM. ATOM is one of the better paced RPGs I've played, and I had no real gripes with it. IMO underrated.

Good list and agree with most of it. I'm no Warhammer enthusiast, but I really enjoyed TW Warhammer III. I barely got into II around the time III came out so I guess I missed out on its peak.

Did a playthrough of Dark Cloud II a few years ago with emulation, and I thought it was pretty **** good.

This is not a final list! All of these games have superb gameplay, memorable soundtracks and a great story if there is one. They also offer great depth in various forms.

1. Deus Ex
2. Planescape: Torment
3. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
4. Super Mario 64
5. Banjo-Kazooie - A long-nosed witch with bad teeth and dirty hygiene as villain, trying to look good by sucking the beauty out of another character. What did Rare mean with it ?
5. Conker's Bad Fur Day - Fighting a Black Panther. Hmm, did Rare red-pill youngsters back in the days ?
6. Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos/The Frozen Throne
7. Quake
8. Banjo-Tooie
9. Quake 3 - In part due to CPMA.
10. Super Smash Bros. Melee
11. Starcraft: Brood War
12. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - Great mods, some which are used for tournaments like Horn of the Abyss.
13. Ultimate Doom/Doom II - Definitely has the best modding scene.
14. Quake 2*
15. Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc
16. SC2 - Not using BNet anymore, so missing out on it, but it is still one of the top RTS.
17. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night*
18. Super Mario World - In part due to the romhacks. Tried some tutorial hacks for Kaizo stuff, didn't finish yet. Also got far in one beginner Kaizo hack.
19. F-Zero GX
20. Silent Hill 2*
21. Silent Hill 3*
22. Silent Hill 1*
23. Silent Hill 4*
23. Clock Tower 3*
24. Super Ghouls 'n' Ghosts*
25. Donkey Kong 64
26. Super Metroid
26. Resident Evil (NGC Remake)*
27. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy - Stand-in for the Originals, 2 being the best imo.*
28. Crash N.Sane Trilogy - Also stand-in for the Originals.*
29. Hi-Fi Rush
30. BG I & II*
31. MediEvil
32. Jak & Daxter Trilogy*
33. Valkyrie Profile*
34. System Shock: Enhanced Edition*
35. Pepsi Man*
36. Koudelka*
37. F-Zero X
38. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
39. Metroid Prime 2: Echoes
40. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

Aside the top 26, there is room for changes. Haven't come around to playing much in my collection, so the backlog is kind of gigantic. Enough for the next decades, however.
Any game with a * indicates that I haven't finished it yet or in case of collections/compilations only in part. Example: Spyro 1 & 2 while not 3 yet.
Having been a console gamer for most of my life certain PC titles aren't found in the list yet.
Honorary mentions: Ultima series, Might & Magic series, other main line titles of Zelda, Mario, Paper Mario (N64 & NGC), Resonance of Fate/End of Eternity, Sweet Home, Resident Evil series, other SH titles, Doom 3 + 2016 + Eternal, Mario Party 1-6, ESO series, System Shock II, Thief series, Sly Cooper series, Metal Gear Solid series and many more. Taking a guess that something like Ultima 7 and System Shock II can very well land in my top 50, even on higher spots.

Edit: Forgot a game and had to change it. Golden Sun/Golden Sun: The Lost Age out and A Link to the Past in at 40.

Wasn't the N64 a ******* timeless masterpiece? Kudos to Conker's Bad Fur Day. My grandma got me that **** by mistake, and I'll always be grateful for it.

The N64 is grossly overrated. There are few games on the N64 that have withstood the test of time. Compare that to any other console which has more games worth playing.
