I feel like the FPS genre in general was doomed from the start, especially as the people who were originally passionate about their games moved on or are replaced by corporatards who shove out annual copy+paste releases which shifts focus from gameplay perfection to money generation. Halo freshened things up quite, both for PvP and single-player but the modern audience demands newer and faster shooters which is why newer Halo's sucked so much as it doesn't work well in fast paced gameplay. It "killed" boomer shooters simply because the gameplay of those games had run its course. It was new but still familiar and was simply the result of the natural evolution of this genre which was already advancing away from boomer shooters anyways. That video raises all the right reasons on why Halo's gameplay worked out so well in its time. It's just now nobody in the industry can successfully replicate it nor can anyone make something actually revolutionary.

In the current drought, you last long enough in this genre to typically end up back where you were, hence the Doom remakes + CoD and Battlefield looking identical nowadays. FPS's are doomed to 5v5 shooters or 50v50 slogs with single-player not even being an option most of the time if other games don't evolve themselves and advance the genre like Halo and its contemporaries did. If not, enjoy WW2 era shooter 456, generic hero shooter 11 and the same CoD game released for the 10th time. But of course, you can only go so far in this genre before reinventing the wheel anyways and that's why it's doomed to begin with.

A common topic that I see online is that there was a golden age of FPS games before Halo came along and consolized the genre throwing it into a massive slump until the relatively recent arrival of throw back shooters like the newer Doom games and indies. Personally I highly disagree with this view point and think that if anything Halo did something unique and interesting with what was a pretty stale genre. Most games that tried to copy Halo failed to understand what made it good and a lot of the things detractors have to say about Halo itself make it sound like they've never played it themselves. There's a pretty good video on this that made me curious to get the RPGHQ take on this topic since there seems to be a good mix of geriatrics and zoomers here. :eyebrows:
Generally speaking, Boomer Shooters are very linear, and almost exclusively Single Player.

Halo, I feel was almost more of a tech demo when they made it, given its scope; but regardless, it set a new standard for what the genre could achieve -- and I do earnestly believe it allowed things like COD to become as powerful as it has.

I don't however, think that Halo killed it directly, since the Shooter genre had begun to move away from that anyway -- with things like Timesplitters, Red Faction, and Army Men (where my boomers at?) coming out at the same sort of time. I feel there was a new zeitgeist in gaming; newer technology allowed for more interesting systems, allowing for broader scope in gaming.

As for the consolisation... Arguably that is simply tied to gaming becoming a more 'marketable' medium. As much as I don't think it really matters, it is still true, PC gaming has always been a niche in regards to markets. It was an inevitability that console gaming would take off for the mass market. The important part is that consoles and large player lobby gaming meant that there was no reason to stick to the traditional style of shooter, as it didn't really utilise the consoles (at the time, they were not necessarily too far behind PCs) decent tech.

What is this cringe?

Also, if you're going to make a woman, at least make her sound like an actual soldier and not annoying. Kat is the only female spartan I liked.

Nope. Was Childrens online daycare that ruined shooters. Made shooters as a slot machine full of crying children running left and right with submachine guns.

Hal0 1 - Reach is infinitely better than Doom 1 - 2 lmao, why are boomer shooter **** like this? Games like doom are fun but get boring quickly. The only long term playability value beyond a few hours is playing the same linear scripted level over and over again to find a few secret guns or to speedrun, which frankly is NOT amazing game design

Classic Doom is a foundational FPS, the baseline that every FPS after it builds off of. You can return to the basics and have fun, but the genre had progressed beyond the limits of Doom and offer far more depth than Doom ever did. Even modern Doom diverges very significantly from the originals, despite people claiming they're similar.

Don't know what exactly killed the genre for others, but for me...

1. 3rd person play
2. Cover positions
3. Iron sights developed for console limitations
4. Assisted aiming
5. Basic console design and play influence (controllers, interfaces, etc...).

I am sure there are more, but that is what caused me to move away from them.

Halo series, maybe. But Halo 1 was carried by multiplayer and split screen. It's not good if you play it as is. There are whole levels that are simply the same two corridors and rooms copy pasted on top of each other.

Been so long since I played it to be honest. I played it when they first released it. Most of my FPS time (at least for playing other people) was from Doom/Duke/Quake/Unreal era. I remember playing with Counter Strike back then, but it doesn't stick with me like those. Unreal Tournament I played quite a bit and the first Call of duty wasn't bad, but then the "Console, then port to PC" started to become a big thing and all the complaints I listed started to become the norm.

By that time though, I was mostly MMO gaming (UO, EQ, etc...) and so didn't do a lot of FPS games after that.

They've added a lot of really tasteful, well done armor pieces in Halo Infinite. Then you join a match and everybody is covered in LGBTQ2S holograms from head to toe.
