One of the worst things to happen because of 9/11 was Arcanum's sequel probably got canceled due to it.

Arcanum released a couple weeks prior and it made their sales go to almost zero for a while. There was almost no domestic shipping happening, along with a strong dip in spending on entertainment. It recovered a bit but likely never hit the target Sierra was hoping for.Vergil wrote: ↑ February 18th, 2026, 09:47I don't recall this coming up in one of Tim Cain's videos. iirc Tim just says Sierra said "we're not doing that anymore" then got them to do the lord of the rings game, which Sierra then also pulled from them.

Maybe it was just truly a different time but Arcanum seems pretty niche in concept and genre that I don't think it was ever gonna do super great.

also he has way too many videos for me to find the one where he discusses how 9/11 made their sales go to zero so if anyone wants to hunt for it, feel free

After MGS2 his cowriter, Fukushima, disappeared too. The translator/localizer for MGS2, Agnes Kaku, also commented that Kojima is s poor writer on his own.Bertram_Tung wrote: ↑ February 17th, 2026, 18:02MGS1 is the best, it was before they started letting ****** loving Hideo do whatever the **** he wanted, vomitting out all his terrible ideas until they fired him for sheer incompetence.
MGS1 also had the luck of having a localizer that de-weebified the script and made it much better. Rare case of a localizer actually improving the game. Kojima got butthurt and fired him and that's why the writing and dialogue is so much more unnatural and clumsy in all the sequels.

The game looked really impressive graphically for the time and still has a great artstyle. The "HD" patch makes everything tiny and completely ruins the art, makes up most of the screenshots you'll findVergil wrote: ↑ February 18th, 2026, 09:56Maybe it was just truly a different time but Arcanum seems pretty niche in concept and genre that I don't think it was ever gonna do super great.
To be fair tho there were a lot of reviewers that **** on anything that wasn't an ugly fully 3D game during this time period. Neverwinter Nights was considered by some to not look horrendous, just because three dee!

Back in the day, Arcanum fanboys blamed the sluggish sales on the fact that the entire game had been leaked months in advance. https://terra-arcanum.com/forums/thread ... ame.18316/rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 18th, 2026, 09:54Arcanum released a couple weeks prior and it made their sales go to almost zero for a while. I'm paraphrasing a lot but she did and interview with I think a gaming magazine and said she thinks Kojima is a bad writer and his ideas are not conveyed well. If I can find the source I'll post it.Oyster Sauce wrote: ↑ February 18th, 2026, 14:59Agness Kaku said that??Fox1 wrote: ↑ February 18th, 2026, 10:07After MGS2 his cowriter, Fukushima, disappeared too. KOJIMA IS NOT A WRITER
Something Agness has been critical of is Kojima's writing ability, or rather his lack of it. Offering her free opportunity to speak, I asked what she felt, "I think he's very bad at character, and I think he's extremely conventional, as in non-creative, when it comes to plotting. I know that I'll probably get an incredible amount of hate karma - can you say hate karma? - about this. So I'll just say that I did grow up reading, I told you I grew up without TV, so I read instead. And I like Cormac McCarthy, and the science-fiction writers; I love Frank Herbert, I love Alfred Bester, right now I really like Greg Egan, so I am extremely picky, and I do have a high standard when it comes to writing."
"I think that if you're ripping off Tom Clancy, it's...Tom Clancy is Tom Clancy, he deserves all the money and fame. The guy has worked hard. Writing is hard work. So to shoot out a bunch of these kinds of things, that we've been talking about, and then claim yourself as a writer when...And you know, there's good work being done in games. I think Portal is really well written, very beautifully written, but Kojima's stuff is...Fine, be a game creator, and know what you're not very good at, and learn to work with people who are. Stanley Kubrick, famously, the one thing he could not do was write. He could do everything else, but he didn't know how to write, so he worked with good writers, and worked with them in a very sort of relentless partnership. He knew his limits. I don't think Kojima's a writer. The fact that he would even be considered one shows how low the standards are in the game industry. Nothing in MGS2 is above a fanfic level. He wouldn't last a morning in a network TV writers' room, and those aren't exactly turning out the Dark Tower series or The Wire."
After a pause Agness added, "Here's something that might better contextualise my criticism of Kojima's banal imaginings about corridors of power: I've ghosted speeches and other content for the kinds of people he would consider bigwigs, for events like APEC conferences. Politically, I'm a well-informed cynic to the extreme."

I care about a woman's views and opinions on media and politics even less than Kojima's.

It's fun but the level design is incongruous with MGS2's gamelay making it trivially easy and everyone has already talked to death about how the voice acting and cutscenes are worse.Finarfin wrote: ↑ February 19th, 2026, 01:07I mean as much as I had fun with twin snakes, it was slop.

texture work and atmosphere. Twin Snakes looks cartoonist, sterile and muddy. MGS2 has way better textures and holds a solid 60fps most of the time

All of this rings very true, Kojima is very obviously a hack writer. Anyone disagreeing with that hasn't played many of his games (or is some kind of delusional weeb).Fox1 wrote: ↑ February 19th, 2026, 01:29KOJIMA IS NOT A WRITER

Yeah I'd agree with that. Definitely the best gameplay. The only downside is that we can't side with Armstrong.rusty_shackleford wrote: ↑ February 19th, 2026, 04:40It's RevengeanceKolgrim wrote: ↑ February 18th, 2026, 14:27I don't see an option for Twin Snakes the best Metal Gear game bar none.
