That sounds quite different indeed, thank you for the information! Strange how they would change the game so radically. I recall reading a discussion where it was mentioned that sequels do not seem to sell well, and the games mentioned, if I remember right, were Darkest Dungeon 2 and Pillars of Eternity 2, but, having played the first Pillars and experienced some of the second, and now reading this about Darkest Dungeon 2, I would hazard to guess they did not sell as well because they departed so drastically from the things people might have liked about the first games (or, at least, I know I did, what with Pillars having only set, small and locked, areas to explore with the rest being naval only and now this with Darkest Dungeon removing any involvement with the game besides mindless slaughter).wndrbr wrote: ↑ December 29th, 2024, 05:12they don't have a whole lot in common.DagothGeas5 wrote: ↑ December 29th, 2024, 02:24was wondering if I should get into it at some point and then play through to the second game.
DD1 has a proper campaign where you slowly upgrade your Hamlet, do short dungeon runs for treasures, kill bosses, etc. It takes tens of hours to complete. The second DD ditched the traditional progression system and replaced it with a meta-progression. There's not longer a Hamlet to upgrade, now the whole run from start to the final boss takes you around two hours, and you're meant to constantly replay the game trying different party/skill/artifact compositions, akin to The Binding of Isaac. Funnily enough there are no dungeons in DD2, the game is just a gauntlet where you ride on your Stagecoach from one combat encounter to another. No exploration, no long term resource management, etc.

Epic Games paid the price, to be precise.

Thought you meant dragon's dugma 2 at first.DDC wrote: ↑ December 30th, 2024, 23:03I've kind of been wanting to try DD2 for a while, but I'm sure the price will keep dropping hard. Game seems to be pretty hated but not sure if that's because it's different from DD1, or if it's just not a good roguelike in general.
Darkest Dungeon 2 sucks, it's essentially unrelated to the first game entirely other than sharing some visual design aspects.

No.
It's console shovelware from circa 2000.

@Unhelpful Contrarian I wanted to ask you about Alpha Protocol. Is it this the game in question?
Would you recommend it? I think I heard of it before, but I have never played it before.

Yes. it’s Obsidian finest games only being beat by F:NV. Alpha Protocol is the one rare games that truly delivers in Choice and Consequences with major divergent path that isn’t just a marketing bullet points seen so often in games.

As for badges, I wish to experience each game at my own pace and give it my time, which is a snail-pace but it is how I can enjoy them, but that said, I love how you are collecting them one after the other! In time my badges will grow in numbers too don't you worry

Last I checked, about a year or so ago, it was Xenonauts 1 in 3D. Not sure if they've pivoted since then.Acrux wrote: ↑ February 8th, 2025, 20:40How is Xenonaughts 2? I didn't care for the first one, for context.

Anvil of Dawn is decent with a few caveats. Grid-based movement blobber dungeons, on-rail cinematic roaming overworld instead of the open world of the Ravenloft games Dreamforge did earlier. You gain experience for weapons and spells as you kill stuff, but only in limited capacity, investing in anything but swords is a noob trap because the most powerful weapon in the game and a necessary plot coupon is a sword. Magic has slightly more leeway, but you'll want to invest in healing since you'll be doing that and a whole lot of combat mambo to avoid taking damage. Combat is real time. You swing as much as you want and if you're luck you hit the enemy while they swing at you at various intervals. Enemies come one at a time, but you can get surrounded. Nearly every puzzle in AoD is based on weighted pressure plates which means tons of rocks and this is the most irritating part of the game. You can get over-encumbered and when that happens you get exhausted once you start swinging your weapon which means maluses to your strength which means even more exhaustion, which means you'll end up doing no damage in combat. So what ends up happening is that you'll put all your rocks into a bag then drop them before you start fighting.DagothGeas5 wrote: ↑ February 12th, 2025, 03:38Are these any good?

Have I mentioned bags yet? Anvil of Dawn an open inventory system similar to Ultima VIII and VIX which means if you don't manage your stuff from the beginning you'll never be able to find anything later. You'll get some containers to put more stuff in which helps you categorize your crap and if you don't do this you will most certainly regret it. Plot is nothing to write home about, graphics are nice, spells are neato. Colorful environments and enemies. Game is linear, but some areas can be visited in different order. It's a pretty fun romp traditional romp over all, but like I said, it has some irritating issues.
Stonekeep was the other last big commercial blobber of the 90s alongside AoD (both came out the same year within a month of each other). Interplay's massive money pit is nowhere near as colorful as Dreamforge's it also does everything differently. You gain skills by using them (as I recall). At first this is easy and then they go up very slowly. Magic is an odd beast in Stonekeep, you need runestaffs or runecasters or whatever they called them and there's only a few in the game. You learn runes throughout the game and you write them on the blank spaces on the staff as you see fit to cast spells. You even get meta runes to enhance spells in different ways. The last and most powerful runecaster is hidden in such a dickmove fashion that I have no clue how anyone could find it without help. Combat is real time and you only control Drake. Everyone else attacks on their own. Casting spells in combat requires you to hold the runestaff out and then cast the spell.
The game is almost entirely linear, there are one or two places where you can do things in different order, but otherwise you have very little control over how things happen or when people leave or when they join you. Unlike AoD there's no encumbrance here, you can carry up to 99 of an object if you can that many. It's pretty fun, can get really difficult at times for new players though.
The only thing I really remember about Return to Krondor is that it was extremely short and the final battle was a wet fart.
Beautifully put together, thank you for all the information! Will get them all once I am able but will probably wait for a sale for Return to Krondor then.
