Can't help but notice how much more love he has for Arcanum than Fallout. Just a bit of armchair psychology, but I'm going to guess it's because he feels like Fallout was ripped away from him & taken in a much different direction, and he either owns the Arcanum IP or it's completely dead so it doesn't matter.
Pretty sure he doesn't own Arcanum. He made a video about how he updated Arcanum as a Windows 10 app (idk what this means) but he can't release it due to ownership issues.

Apparently Microsoft owns it after acquiring Acti-Blizz.
I default to my second part of it being a dead series therefore it hasn't been trampled on.

God I hope they don't make a new Arcanum game.

I think he probably doesn't focus on Fallout due to fatigue with it honestly. He's been the "creator of Fallout" for decades now. It probably gets a little old answering questions about it. The fact it is a series that became highly popular long after he stopped having anything to do with it probably does help his antipathy towards it though.

Also get the feeling that the only reason he holds a lot of his viewpoints is because he's a butt pirate. Strikes me as someone who would be a moderate/centrist if he had a wife.

Probably has the original compilation tools and the source code at home to patch it. But he can't release it because he doesn't own the code or the IP.

The requirement that players must see all the content because it took time/money to develop it is why so many RPGs suck now. Larian not doing this is why so many people enjoyed their games. The more unique you make someone's playthru, the more the character feels like them rather than just playing the same story as everyone else with different skills.
BG3 has no replayability.

If it's a skill 99% of the playerbase would beeline, it's a **** idea.
Exactly. Companions mean more content, more damage in combat etc. It would've been a no brainer skill to take, limiting build variety outside of challenge or gimmick builds.
rusty_shackleford wrote: April 6th, 2025, 01:57
A lot of players don't like playing with companions
So don't take any. Not like automatic companion eligibility forces you to bring em along.

"BG3 has no replayability."

Depends how much of a min maxer of a player you are...I did pretty much everything interesting first time through.

Gothic 2 is probably the standard on replayable because you cannot be both warrior and mage once through.

It's more about there not being any meaningful branching paths. You cannot side with the droods in the grove for example and while you can side with the goblins (for whatever reason, no good one is ever presented), that branch very quickly converges at the beginning of act 2. There are no meaningful choices in the underdark and act 3 has a lot to do but the only differences you get is who joins you in the final battle, which I think isn't really that impactful. I guess we shouldn't expect too much from a game that's unfinished crowdfund slop.

I don’t understand why he gets upset that people don’t want to hear about his butt pirate when it’s a channel focused on game development for RPG’s. Like no **** people are going to get annoyed by such an off topic subjects .

Also I didn’t even know that Tim Cain was gay.

He goes into it in the video itself, he never actually posted it. It was one about all the lies other game developers have told about him and he decided not to post it because it was too negative. Timbo's one of those gay guys who wants everyone to like him, this is why he gets so huffy when people tell him to stop talking about being gay.

Listening to a couple more videos and I can't help but think about Underrail anytime he mentions all the various positions for making a game. There are plenty of very good indie games made by one person or a very small team.

He talks about how Arcanum was made by such a "small team", yet it is undeniably the best game he actually worked on from start to finish. No, I won't accept your Fallout cope.
Arcanum was made with a fraction of the budget, manpower(OK, well, maybe the same manpower), time, etc., as Outer Turds. Arcanum was also a moonshot project, whereas Outer Kurds was purposely kept ""limited"" in scope.

Don't even give me the "it sold way more copies!", If Outer Nerds didn't have Obsidian's name attached to it, "Made by the creator of Fallout", etc., it would have sold maybe 1/5th as many copies as it did. And that's not even accounting for how different the market was.

Game development seems to have extreme diminishing returns past ~15 people, and heck it might be closer to ~10 now, that number will keep shrinking as tooling, asset store, AI, etc., improve.
Yet we have big publishers paying ******* to make AA games on AAA budgets, all subsidized by slop pass

There's also just a huge difference in the eras they were made too. Outer Worlds sold more technically but it's like comparing how much money movies have made without considering things like inflation.

I don't think he actually understands nobody liked outer hurls. Maybe the setting was OK as a premise before it was taken further, but the writing, the worldbuilding, etc., is just across the board awful.
He described the pitch as "Fallout meets Firefly". Huh?

It's Rick and Morty meets Fallout 4.

It is grossly overrated, but I did like the aesthetic of their rusty spaceships landing in the wilderness of space California and then cowboys step out to get into gunfights with cool retro guns. It is one of the very few pieces of fantasy visual media with a traditional American aesthetic (in this case, the American frontier). But I remember the story being meh. I did not like the prostitute. The wandering preacher was an appealing idea, but he was written by nonbelievers so the character doesn't stick with the convictions he ostensibly believes. I think part of the reason why the show is overrated is because it did not run long enough for people to become jaded with its flaws, unlike with the other sci fi shows of the time where after 3 or 4 seasons the fans are able to identify flaws and come to a consensus.
